today was a really good day. i took some pretty pictures and went on a long walk with my dog. then i had turkey leftovers for dinner and a ressurection bun for dessert. i don't want to go to school tomorrow.
The plan was to head out into the hills this afternoon looking for autumnal colour - of course this weeks hurricane and today's wind and rain made that a bit of a challenge - but i spotted this tiny 'shroom hiding from the wind and rain in the moss so it wasn't a total loss...
Just when you think that winter can't get any more bleak & drab, Hellebores or Lenten Roses begin to brighten up the garden with their awesome beauty. These flowers look so fragile & delicate but are amazingly strong & hardy and often bloom with snow on the ground.

The most famous of the formations at Arches National Park. A rainstorm was threatening and the 1.5 mile hike was a challenge but this sight was definitely worth it!
After a tiring hike up steep inclines of slickrock, Delicate Arch came into view. The 68 foot iconic arch stand mere feet from the edge of the canyon walls, and is balancing on the small piece of sandstone on the left support pillar. This arch has become a symbol for the park, as well as a pilgrimage point for many people visiting Utah.

It's quite the scene at this iconic location even in November. The first day I was here there was a wedding ceremony under the arch and the 2nd a proposal!

This little guy was surfing wildly on his perch, the grass waving in the breeze. I had to put in several shots to get a clear one - but the backlight was just too good to miss the chance!
This is the famous Delicate Arch that is on the license plates in Utah.

Our next stop in Arches National Park was the hike to Delicate Arch. It was still quite early but starting to get hot - glad we didn't leave it any later.
Mute Swan. Best Viewed Large On Black The Mute Swan is reported to mate for life. However, changing of mates does occur infrequently, and swans will remate if their partner dies. If a male loses his mate and pairs with a young female, she joins him on his territory. If he mates with an older female, they go to hers. I'm getting on a National Park fix with the Yosemite trip nearing, so I decided to break into the archive and edit some shots from the previous parks that I have visited.
When we visited Arches it was almost an after thought. We spent the night in Canyonlands, and since we were so close we had to see Arches as well. We didn't have much time to spend, and it was very hot, but we did the short hike to Delicate Arch. I'm glad we saw it, but next time I would like to spend more time here hiking and photographing this beautiful park.

Delicate Arch as viewed from the longer, more strenuous hike to reach the arch itself with the LaSal Mountains as a backdrop....and yes, I did remove all the touristas as they detracted from the beauty of the scene; LOL!!!! Edward Abbey offers a pretty interesting way of describing this natural phenomenon.....
"There are several ways of looking at Delicate Arch. Depending on your preconceptions you may see the eroded remnants of a sandstone fin, a giant engagement ring cemented in rock, a bow-legged pair of petrified cowboy chaps, a triumphal arch for a procession of angels, an illogical freak, a happening.... If Delicate Arch has any significance it lies, I will venture, in the power of the odd and unexpected to startle the senses and surprise the mind out of their ruts of habit, to compel us into a reawakened awareness of the wonderful-that which is full of wonder."
