If you could go to the winter Olympics and see any event, which would it be? I have always wanted to see the figure skating, but after spending the majority of these Olympics watching the curling I do not think I would mind going to the curling. If I were to go to the summer Olympics I would want to watch either the gymnastics or the swimming.

And the weatherman predicted rain. He was wrong - we had hail, rain and sun all topped off with a fantastic high tide at sundown! Perfect.

'A poignant shot' I thought, in a quiet moment to remember those who had been lost, as I surveyed the Statue of Liberty over looking the construction of the new Twin Towers.

Memorial Park Bubanj is a World War II memorial complex built to commemorate the shooting and execution of more than 10,000 citizens of Niš (my hometown) and people from Serbia and other parts of the country.

The complex is arranged as a park, with a memorial trail about half a mile long running through it. The centrepiece of the site is a marble relief measuring 23 by 2.5 metres, with five compositions that symbolize the "killing machine" - execution and firing squads, civil revolts, surrender of the German invaders and final victory over the oppressors.

Another dominant feature of the park is three concrete obelisks that symbolize raised hands with clenched fists. Each of the three fists are different sizes, depicting men's, women's and children's hands that defy the enemy, symbolic of the fact entire families were killed at Bubanj.

Nearby there is a summer stage.

50007 'Hercules' and 50049 'Defiance' at Kidderminster during last years spring diesel gala!

Class 50 "Hoover" 50049 arriving at Gloucester on 15th May 1980, heading the 1M60 15:07 Plymouth to Manchester Piccadilly service, with at least one 'basher' visible. 'Peak' 46055 is waiting in preparation to take over the leg north from Gloucester. Class 37/0 37181 is visible on Horton Road depot. This Class 50 had an interesting career with BR, delivered new to Stoke depot in December 1968 as 449 (without the 'D' prefix) as the final member of the class of fifty constructed, initially being employed on WCML passenger services. It went through Doncaster works for refurbishment, emerging in large-logo livery in May 1983 and in 1987 was chosen for trials on freight services, based at Plymouth Laira, being renumbered 50149 to reflect its status as having low-geared Class 37 bogies. The trial was abandoned by 1989 and it reverted to hauling passenger services as 50049, until withdrawn from BR service in August 1991. It was purchased for preservation and today operates on a spot-hire basis on selected GB Railfreight services, wearing a GB Railfreight livery.

The City of Defiance is the county seat of Defiance County, Ohio. In 2010 it had a population of 16,494.

HMS Defiance The ninth ship named HMS "Defiance" was launched at Pembroke Dock in south Wales on March 27th 1861. She was immediately declared as obsolete following the introduction of ironclad ships and was towed to Plymouth, where she was placed in the reserve fleet. was the last wooden line-of-battle ship launched for the Royal Navy.

Effectively a 2 minute exposure with the multiexposure mode of the K-5. Nifty feature if you don't want to get diffraction pushing things to F/16, but want a longer exposure. Raffles Place, Singapore.

A felled tree stump sprouts new life.

A peek-a-boo view of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, from Point Defiance Park. The original Tacoma Narrows Bridge was also known as Galloping Gertie because it would sway in the wind with the road way oscillating vertically. That bridge didn't even last six months before it collapsed. The lessons learned from that changed how suspension bridges were designed around the world.

The Salmon Beach neighborhood is on the left shore just above the vertical center. It was originally a bunch of summer fishing shacks but it evolved into year-round dwellings. A wealthy developer wanted to kick them out because he thought they were an eyesore. He failed because they were squatting on land owned by someone else who wanted them there. Now I think they're technically leasing the land they're on and their legal status is no longer in question.

The tree on the lower right is known here as a Madrona tree. In Canada they're called Arbutus. In Mexico they're jokingly called Tourist trees because their skin is red and peeling.

SCAN from one of my magazines. Jerry McBee 's1980 White Freightliner wheel stander. I think it has a 12 cyl. Rolls Royce Merlin engine. Let me know if I'm wrong please. Also where is the truck now? I scanned this from a magazine of mine this was taken in 1981 at the old (OCIR) Orange County International Raceway , here in Southern Calif.

This defiant Laughing Gull posed for me as Camp Avocet was walking down to Cape May Point in New Jersey. The wind was blowing from behind him which ruffled his feathers. He later scooped up a quick bite to eat (which is what I believe was a small snail) as we walked onto the next bird.

I couldn’t think of another title that sums up anything Ukrainian at the moment apart from Brave, Stoic, Resolute, Industrious, Fearless, Valiant, Tough, RESPECT, INSPIRING and HUMBLING. Any others please feel free to add. Another shot from yesteryear - RIAT 1997 shot with a Ricoh XR-X film SLR and a cheapo 400mm lens.

An undated and acquired negative of 50149 Defiance on a lengthy rake of clay hoppers entering Par station. Apart from its unplanned foray onto passenger work (www.flickr.com/photos/35992382@N00/15206048147/in/photoli...) I unfortunately normally managed to avoid Defiance whilst in this guise... 50 049 Defiance takes the platform road at Oxford as it arrives with 1B58, the 10:50 Paddington - Worcester

Only a few weeks remained for off peak loco hauled services over the Cotswold line before the May 1982 timetable change. All but 2 peak hour services each way went over to DMU operation in order to save money on infrastructire renewal. As a result, Worcester lost most of its through services to/from Paddington

Thanks to 'Marra Man' for the WTT info.

I was strolling on the beach and then I saw this huge wave coming to the shore. I also saw this kid who was playing on the beach and was not afraid of intimidating and threatening wave. Instead, he just kept looking at it. I was impressed by his attitude and quickly capture the image. I think this picture is teaching us not to be intimidated by the hardship or threat we face in the life. Instead we should face them with all vigor and we can conquer them.

I spend a lot of time in nature, and much of that time is spent free from the confines of clothing. I recently teamed up with fellow free spirit Adam to explore an abandoned mining town on a crisp October day.

We cannot hold back Mother Nature, she will always break whatever boundries we set for her. Usually in an interesting and beautiful way.

My favorite tree by the river again, I have a feeling I'll visit her again someday.

ND&W operates a variety of Geeps on this line that was up till recently a Pioneer Lines company. Unfortunately, the Pioneer short line holding group was acquired by Patriot Rail on September 14, 2022. Patriots dip blue paint scheme is not near as nice as any of these.

Molon Labe is a traditional shout of defiance when someone tries to disarm someone else. The literal translation from Greek is "Come! Take!" It is a dare. I'm sorry that so few people recognize the expression and its significance. Some are content to say just "It's Greek to me." If you saw the movie 300, you saw King Leonidas defy the Persian king this way at the Battle of Thermopylae, (480 bce ),
