The Skeen School, once educating children around the local area, continues to stand tall and proud. Within the confinements of academia, such academics once taught were arithmetic, reading and writing. Now [slowly] withering away at the edge of a wheat field, instead of providing adolescent moments to the youth, the former one-room school house serves its purpose of storing farming equipment.

When I last visited the Defiance coal branch in western New Mexico, nothing was running except this work train, which was out dumping rip-rap. The mine was closed, either on strike or shut down for repair. The 2372 is an ex-TP&W unit, a long way from its former home. The date is July 1988 at mile 1.3. They had been dumping between miles 3 and 4. Photo by Joe McMillan.

Two of ND&W's GP16's and a ex Gettysburg GP9 sit idled in the yard at Defiance, OH with a short train waiting to be interchanged with CSX. They may not have the capital to keep up appearances, but they do have a neat looking roster.
A fairly rare visit to Duluth for the Defiance and its consort Ashtabula as they were the final vessel to arrive in 2019. They loaded ore at CN for Toledo. 1/1/19
If I'm right there has been snow cover here since before the ice storm on Dec 21st. I am bored of it and from now until it melts I shall be seeing it only in glorious technicolor.

Black roofed 50 049 Defiance heads north at Hele & Bradninch with 1M85, the 10:30 Penzance - Liverpool which it worked throughout, returning later with 1V21, the 21:35 Liverpool - Penzance !
Looking at the Woodburn/5th District of the former Wabash Railroad now operated by Pioneer Railroad as the Napoleon Defiance & Western Railway. The stacks are on the CSX Garrett Subdivision, the powered derail is a recent install.
An eastbound CSX stacker with BNSF power emerges from dense early morning fog and charges across the Napolean Defiance & Western diamond in Defiance Ohio.

One of our local resident bald eagles, a group of pelicans flew by too close to the eagle's nest, the male eagle quickly arrived and circled the nest, landing on a nearby branch and screamed a challenge.
BCOL 4614, a C40-8M, leads an empty CSX coke train eastbound through the East Defiance interlocking on a cloudy morning. This was the last photo I took of one of these unique cowl bodied units leading a train. CN has purged their roster of these units in favor of newer GEs.
