Felix Nussbaum Haus Osnabrück, Germany.

Felix Nussbaum (11 December 1904 – 9 August 1944) was a German-Jewish surrealist painter. Nussbaum’s artwork gives a rare glimpse into the essence of one individual among the victims of the Holocaust.

Nussbaum was born in Osnabrück, Germany, as the son of Rahel and Philipp Nussbaum. Philipp was a World War I veteran and German patriot before the rise of the Nazis. He was an amateur painter when he was younger, but was forced to pursue other means of work for financial reasons. He therefore encouraged his son’s artwork passionately.

Nussbaum was a lifelong student, beginning his formal studies in 1920 in Hamburg and Berlin, and continuing as long as the contemporary political situation allowed him. In his earlier works, Nussbaum was heavily influenced by Vincent van Gogh and Henri Rousseau and he eventually paid homage to Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà as well. Carl Hofer’s expressionist painting influenced Felix’s careful approach to color.

In 1933, Nussbaum was studying under a scholarship in Rome at the Berlin Academy of the Arts when the Nazis gained control of Germany. Adolf Hitler sent his Minister of Propaganda to Rome in April to explain to the artist elites how a Nazi artist was to develop, which entailed promoting heroism and the Aryan race. Nussbaum realised at this point that, as a Jew, he could not remain at the academy.

The next decade of Nussbaum's life was characterised by fear, which is reflected in his artwork. In 1934 he took Felka Platek (de), a painter whom he had met while studying in Berlin and would later marry during their exile in Brussels in 1937, to meet his parents in Switzerland. Felix's parents eventually grew homesick for Germany and, against his fierce objections,[1] they returned. This was the last time Felix would see his mother and father — the source of his spiritual and financial support. Felix and Felka would spend the next ten years in exile, mostly in Belgium, a period of emotional and artistic isolation for him but also one of the most artistically productive in his life.

After Nazi Germany attacked Belgium in 1940, Nussbaum was arrested by Belgian police as a "hostile alien" German, and was subsequently taken to the Saint-Cyprien camp in France. The desperate circumstances in the camp influenced his pictures of that time. He eventually signed a request to the French camp authorities to be returned to Germany. On the train ride from Saint Cyprien to Germany, he managed to escape and rendezvous with Felka in Brussels, and they began a life in hiding. Without residency papers, Nussbaum had no way of earning an income, but friends provided him with shelter and art supplies so that he could continue his craft. The darkness of the next four years of his life can be seen in the expression of his artwork from that period.

1944 was the year in which the plans of Nazi Germany had the greatest impact on the Nussbaum family. Philipp and Rahel Nussbaum were killed at Auschwitz in February. In July, Nussbaum and his wife were found hiding in an attic by German armed forces. They were arrested, sent to the Mechelen transit camp and given the numbers XXVI/284 and XXVI/285. On August 2 they arrived at Auschwitz, and a week later Felix was murdered at the age of 39. On September 3, Nussbaum’s brother was sent to Auschwitz, and on September 6 his sister-in-law and niece were also murdered there. In December, his brother – the last of the family – died from exhaustion in the camp at Stutthof. Within one year, the entire Nussbaum family had been murdered.

Major works

In this time period, Nussbaum created two of his best-known works: Self Portrait with Jewish Identity Card (1943), and Triumph of Death (1944).

Triumph of Death

Triumph des Todes (Die Gerippe spielen zum Tanz) ("Triumph of Death (The skeletons play to the dance)"), 1944

Triumph of Death shows Nussbaum's attention to detail. According to his biography, Felix Nussbaum: Art Defamed; Art in Exile; Art in Resistance, the crumpled music score has the first several bars of "The Lambeth Walk", a popular song from the musical Me and My Girl. The words that would normally accompany the music are "Ev'rythin' free and easy / Do as you darn well please".

Legacy - Felix Nussbaum Haus in Osnabrück

Felix Nussbaum’s artwork affords a rare glimpse into the mind of one individual among the victims of the Holocaust. In 1998, the Felix Nussbaum Haus in Osnabrück opened its doors to exhibit the artworks of Felix Nussbaum.

He was featured alongside fellow concentration camp survivors and artists Jan Komski and Dinah Gottliebova in the 1999 documentary film Eyewitness, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject.

Art and Remembrance: The Legacy of Felix Nussbaum is a 1993 documentary directed by Barbara Pfeffer (Wikipedia).

In contrast to the patriotic, colorful war propaganda posters of the first half of the 20th century, the 1960s and 70s gave rise to another type of political advertisement -- the simply drawn, sometimes sobering protest poster. Decorating the bulletin boards of college campuses, these posters served as rallying cries for peace, defamations of Nixon and the federal government, and tributes to the martyrs of the civil rights movement.

This is a detail from the Wirksworth Stone, an ancient Saxon coffin lid found buried in 1892 near the altar of Wirksworth Church in Derbyshire, England. Evidence suggests that it was made about 1300 years ago. It may have been buried to protect it from defamation at the time of the English reformation, when many religious artefacts were destroyed. Underneath it was found a near perfect skeleton. The stone is thought to be carved with pictorial representations of events in the life of Christ. This detail may represent the Ascension, a Christian belief that the resurrected Christ was carried up to Heaven by angels after his death and reanimation.

Of course this interpretation may be incorrect, and this image could represent a wish for the occupant of the grave to make a successful journey to the afterlife born up by angels or other supernatural beings. All such is supposition and many other interpretations are possible. At the time of its creation, very few people could read or write, and such carvings are not described by other corroborative documents. Irrespective, this wonderful artefact, albeit a mystery, stands there as a witness to our ancestors even though we may never understand its true message, but perhaps like the people of that day we will interpret it as we see it.

Restrictions on freedom of expression in South Sudan are having a “chilling effect” and “further shrinking the space for debate and dissent” in the conflict-affected country, according to a new UN report.

The report finds that genuine reconciliation and lasting peace will only be achieved if the people of the east African nation are free and safe to express their opinions.

“It is vital that the voices of all the people of South Sudan are heard so that genuine, inclusive and durable peace can be achieved,” said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the UN Mission in South Sudan, David Shearer. “All parties to the conflict must respect people’s right to freedom of expression regardless of their ethnicity, beliefs or political views.”

Co-authored by UNMISS and the UN Human Rights Office, the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression in South Sudan identifies 60 verified incidents which violate the legitimate right to freedom of expression of 102 victims, including 17 women, in the period from July 2016 to December 2017.

Incidents include the killing of two people, the arbitrary arrest and detention of 58 others, 16 people dismissed from their jobs, the closure or suspension of three media houses, censorship of newspaper articles, and the blocking of websites. Those targeted were seen to be critical of the Government, tarnishing the country’s reputation, or dealing with issues deemed sensitive.

Journalists are often not free to cover stories in South Sudan, particularly in relation to the conflict that has raged across the country for almost five years. They regularly experience censorship, harassment, and threats to their life.

“This is why it’s important, first of all, to have the ceasefire because when you are in a situation of insecurity, when people are fighting on a daily basis, nobody will be able to freely share their views, including journalists who will be afraid to raise questions or publish their stories,” said UNMISS Human Rights Director, Eugene Nindorera.

The report found that Government security forces were responsible for two-thirds of the verified cases. It stated that the National Security Service’s broad powers of surveillance, arrest and detention, including the embedding of officers in some newspaper printing houses, had led to a growing climate of self-censorship.

There are also ongoing incidents of hate speech as well as examples of allegations of hate speech being used as an excuse to censor free speech.

“Unfortunately hate speech is a reality in South Sudan. Inflammatory language continues to target individuals and communities based on their ethnicity, perceived beliefs or political views,” said Eugene Nindorera. “But Government institutions and actors have also often invoked hate speech as the basis for imposing restrictions such as censorship of newspaper articles critical of the Government that did not appear to meet the threshold of incitement to violence, hostility or discrimination.”

The report acknowledges efforts by the Government, civil society, and other stakeholders to promote an inclusive and safe environment for freedom of expression and democratic dialogue, including the release of political activists and journalists from prolonged and arbitrary detention.

After five years of ongoing conflict in South Sudan, reconciliation and peace processes are underway internally and locally. Given the importance of these initiatives, it is vital that civil society actors, journalists and others can operate freely.

“We accept that these are extraordinary circumstances in South Sudan but, at the same time, if we are looking to foster peace and the ability for people to be involved in a free and democratic society then freedom of expression must be at the cornerstone of that,” said David Shearer.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said that South Sudan’s conflict, with widespread human rights violations and abuses committed by all parties, had inflicted untold suffering on millions.

“Freedom of opinion and expression are not luxuries but essential to bring about peace and development, and to build a resilient and participative society,” he said.

The report makes a number of recommendations, including:

•Amending legislation to decriminalize defamation and ensure that powers given to security forces do not infringe on the legitimate right to freedom of expression;

•Ensuring freedom of expression violations are promptly investigated and prosecuted;

•Strengthening mechanisms to combat hate speech;

•Supporting the training of journalists and state agencies;

•Ensuring the Media Authority is fully operational, independent and adequately resourced.
