Hungarian postcard by Rakosi Kiado, Budapest, no. 514. Photo: Rozgcnyi.

The effortlessly suave Romanian-born actor Pál Jávor (1902-1959) was one of the first stars of the Hungarian sound cinema. His glamorous and highly successful stage and film career was broken, first by the German invasion of Hungary and again by the Communist government after the war. He moved to Hollywood where he only could play bit parts.

Pál Jávor (sometimes credited as Paul Javor) was born Pál Jermann in Arad, Austria-Hungary (now Romania), in 1902. He was the lovechild of Pál Jermann, a 53-year-old cashier and Katalin Spannenberg, a 17-year-old servant. His parents, who only married after his birth, had 3 children to care for, which made life hard for the family, who often moved. His mother later opened a grocery store in Arad's Kossuth street. Jávor was a student in a state operated gymnasium, but often played truant to see movies in the town's two theatres. From very early on, he wanted to break away from his homeland, and from the simple life his mother wished for him. During World War I, he ran away to serve on the front as a courier. He was caught and transported back months later by military police. In 1918, after working as a junior reporter for the Aradi Hírlap, he set out to emigrate to Denmark, so he could act in the Danish films he idolized. As the state offered free train tickets to anyone who wished to leave the country, he willingly chose self-banishment from Romania, but his ticket was revoked in Budapest. Jávor, now seeking to gain fame in the Hungarian capital, went to study in the Academy of Drama. Living in great poverty, and expelled from the Academy for unknown reasons, he earned his degree in the Actor's Guild school, in 1922. Jávor acted in various theatres in Budapest, Székesfehérvár and several other small towns, but his dissolute lifestyle made him hard to work with. After being banned from the Guild in 1926, he acted in small roles around the country, and later in Budapest, helped by mentors from the theatrical world, and slowly waking the interest of the critics. He was a member of the Vígszínház, the Comedy Theatre of Budapest, between 1930–1935, and the National Theatre between 1935-1944.

In 1929, Pál Jávor finally got the opportunity to appear in the cinema. He then starred in Csak egy kislány van a világon/The Only Girl in the World (Béla Gaál, 1929) opposite Márta Eggerth, also in her film debut. It was to be the last Hungarian silent film, but, ironically, this was also the first one to feature sound. The film’s technicians got hold of the technology by the last days of shooting. This allowed Jávor to sing a song in one of the scenes, which, combined with his charm and temperament made him a star of the country's waking film industry. D Lewis at IMDb: “Despite some slow passages and ellipses in the story caused by missing footage, Csak egy kislány van a világon is an inspired effort with some genuinely great things in it. Director Gaál would go, with considerable success, into comedies in the 1930s, but would end his days, regrettably, in either the Dachau Concentration Camp or at the hands of Nazis on a Budapest street, depending on which account one accepts.” Jávor took the lead role in the first Hungarian sound film, the comedy Kék Bálvány/A blue idol (Lajos Lázár, 1931) with Oscar Beregi Sr. Then followed a smaller part in the second Hungarian sound film, the comedy Hyppolit, a lakáj/Hyppolit, the Butler (István Székely aka Steve Sekely, 1931) starring Gyula Csortos and Gyula Kabos, which became a huge box office hit. Director Istvan Szekeley left Hungary in 1938 to relocate in Hollywood, where he continued to work under the name of Steve Sekely. Hyppolit, a lakáj was shown again in Hungarian cinemas in 1945, 1956 and 1972, and later also returned several times on TV. After this success, the suave and charming Jávor quickly became an idol of the 1930s, appearing in numerous films, but he also remained popular on stage. However, the sudden fame weighed heavily on the young actor, leading to him returning to alcohol. His frequent clashes with colleagues and journalists, resulted in numerous scandals. His life was eased when he met and Olga Landesmann, a widow with two children. After their marriage in 1934, she provided him with a home and family. Among his best known films of that period are the drama Marika (Viktor Gertler, 1938), and the comedy A Noszty fiú esete Tóth Marival/ I Married for Love (Steve Sekely (as István Székely), 1938). There is also a German-language version of the latter, Ihr Leibhusar/Her personal Hussar (Hubert Marischka, 1938), in which he co-stars with Magda Schneider and Paul Kemp. He appeared in more foreign films, including the Austrian-German production Donauschiffer/Danube boat (Robert A. Stemmle, 1940) with Hilde Krahl, and the Italian Inferno giallo/Yellow Hell (Géza von Radványi, 1942) with Fosco Giachetti.

After 1940, World War II slowly became part of life for Hungarian citizens and the theatre world alike, working conditions became increasingly harsher, which Pál Jávor could hardly bear. Being anxious about the regulation of the theatre, and the defaming of fellow actors, he often clashed with superiors. Charged with making unlawful political comments, he became the target of the Gestapo. After hiding in Balatonfüred and Agárd, he returned to Budapest, thinking that the danger of arrest was over. After another quarrel with the Actor's Guild's manager, the Guild suspended him from practicing the profession, and also banned his films. After the German invasion of Hungary, Pál Jávor was arrested by Arrow party members. Jávor was first held in the prison of Sopronkőhida under dire conditions, then transported to Germany. After being liberated by Allied forces, he awaited for the end of the war in Tann and Pfarrkirchen in Austria. His confinement lasted over 9 months, about which he wrote a recollection published in 1946. After the war Jávor found that the theatre world had largely rejected him, offering him only a few roles. The intellectual and cultural cleansing of the new Communist government left him virtually no possibilities. In, 1946, Jávor made a successful tour of Romania, and then travelled to the United States. After arriving in the United States, he was met with great acclaim by the emigrant community, but despite this, he could only arrange small comedic and musical shows, which he found humiliating. Slowly sinking into depression and reaching again for alcohol, the quality of his shows also sank, emptying audience seats. While he thought about returning home, he received no encouraging news from Hungary, and the increasingly tense political situation also forced him to remain in the States. He travelled to Hollywood to seek film roles, but his lack of English left him few possibilities, like the role of Antonio Scotti in the film The Great Caruso (Richard Thorpe, 1951), starring Mario Lanza. The castings were humiliating and the small roles degrading. Jávor joined a touring group, performing Hungarian hit songs and oldies. Later he also worked part-time as a gatekeeper, and computer operator. During his 11 years in the US, Jávor met numerous difficulties, but he later also remembered joyful moments: he wrote numerous articles in American-Hungarian papers, and with his journalist ID he could visit cinemas for free. Through a voluntary detoxication cure, he gave up his alcohol-addiction, and befriended several emigrant artists living in America, including Sándor Márai. In 1956, touring Israel with an occasional group, he learnt that he could finally go home. In 1957, he returned to Budapest, awaited by friends, and jobs in the Jókai and Petőfi theatres. However, the years of hardships laid still fresh on Jávor, and several critics found his acting lacking. But his still living legend carried him on, making several successful appearances, and he also was offered a film deal. But his health could not tolerate the highly intensive life, and after a seizure in 1958, he was transported to a hospital which he never left. While spending over one year in bed, the National Theatre re-hired him, and he was often visited by old friends, also resolving some grudges of the past. But his state worsened, and Pál Jávor died in 1959. He was 57. His burial was a theatrical ceremony, his coffin followed by tens of thousands of fans to the Farkasréti Cemetery.

Chen, arrested last week on charges he defamed state-owned construction equipment maker Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Co. Chen's lengthy explanation of how he invented negative stories about the Changsha-based firm is the latest in a series of televised confessions by suspects in high-profile or politicised cases. The [CITY] protest is part of a National “Families Belong Together” Day of Action featuring more than 710 events in all 50 states and an anchor protest in Lafayette Square in Washington DC. Tens of thousands of people are expected to participate across the country. Specifically, the protesters will demand that the Trump Administration:

•Reunite families now. Permanently end family separation and immediately reunify those that have been separated. ICE must release parents immediately so that ORR can reunify them with their children.

•End family detention. Children and families deserve due process, not indefinite imprisonment. Children do not belong in baby cages and internment-like camps. Family incarceration is not the solution to family separation.

•End ‘Zero Humanity.’ Reverse the Trump administration’s policy that created this crisis and chaos to begin with. Parents should not be criminally prosecuted for doing what all parents do, which is bring their children to safety. This horrible nightmare for families will only end when Trump permanently stops his 100% prosecution policy.

Ilaria del Carretto was born in Zuccarello, the daughter of Carlo, the Marchese del Carretto. In 1403 she married Paolo Guinigi (the lord of Lucca from 1400 to 1430) and they had two children, Ladislao Guinigi, and a daughter, also named Ilaria. She died in Lucca at the age of twenty-six after giving birth to her daughter. Upon her death Paolo commissioned the sculptor, Jacopo della Quercia to create a marble sarcophagus (seen here) in the Cathedral of San Martino in Lucca. In the finished work, she reclines peacefully with a dog, symbol of fidelity at her feet. The sarcophagus was not actually used and Ilaria del Carretto is buried in the Guinigi chapel of Santa Lucia in San Francesco. In 1991, James Beck an American art historian and authority on the sculpture of Jacopo della Quercia severely criticized a 1990 restoration of the tomb which removed the patina. He was unsuccessfully sued for defamation by the conservator. The sarcophagus features some of the earliest putti in sculpture since classical antiquity and predates those of Donatello.

Cathedral of San Martino (Duomo di Lucca, Cattedrale di San Martino) is a Roman Catholic cathedral dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours in Lucca, Italy. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Lucca. Construction was begun in 1063 by Bishop Anselm (later Pope Alexander II). Of the original structure, the great apse with its tall columnar arcades and the fine campanile remain. The nave and transepts of the cathedral were rebuilt in the Gothic style in the 14th century, while the west front was begun in 1204 by Guido Bigarelli of Como and consists of a vast portico of three magnificent arches, and above them three ranges of open galleries adorned with sculptures. In the nave a small octagonal temple or chapel shrine contains the most precious relic in Lucca, the Holy Face of Lucca (Volto Santo di Lucca) or Sacred Countenance. This cedar-wood crucifix and image of Christ, according to the legend, was carved by his contemporary Nicodemus, and miraculously conveyed to Lucca in 782. Christ is clothed in the colobium, a long sleeveless garment. The chapel was built in 1484 by Matteo Civitali, the most famous Luccan sculptor of the early Renaissance. The tomb of Ilaria del Carretto (seen here) by Jacopo della Quercia of Siena, the earliest of his surviving works was commissioned by her husband, the lord of Lucca, Paolo Guinigi, in 1406. Additionally, the cathedral contains Domenico Ghirlandaio's Madonna and Child with Saints Peter, Clement, Paul and Sebastian; Federico Zuccari's Adoration of the Magi, Jacopo Tintoretto's Last Supper, and finally Fra Bartolomeo's Madonna and Child (1509). There is a legend to explain why all the columns of the façade are different. According to the tale, when they were going to decorate it, the inhabitants of Lucca announced a contest for the best column. Every artist made a column, but then the inhabitants of Lucca decided to take them all, without paying the artists and used all the columns.

Britain’s King Charles II closes the country’s coffee houses in response to the Women’s Petition Against Coffee entitled A Proclamation for the Suppression of Coffee Houses.

The proclamation had stated that: “Whereas it is most apparent that the multitude of Coffee Houses of late years set up and kept within this Kingdom, …and the great resort of idle and disaffected persons to them, have produced very evil and dangerous effects; as well for that many tradesman and others, do herein misspend much of their time, which might and probably would be employed in and about their Lawful Calling and Affairs; but also for that in such houses …divers, false, malitious, and scandalous reports are devised and spread abroad to the Defamation of His Majesty’s Government, and to the disturbance of the Peace and Quiet of the Realm.” The proclamation went on to declare that, “his Majesty hath thought it fit and necessary, that the said Coffee Houses be (for the Future) put down and suppressed.”

On January 8, 1676, just a couple of weeks after the initial proclamation shutting down the coffee houses, King Charles II succumbs to public protests and reverses the decision, allowing coffee houses to operate.

Swastikas were ancient symbols. However, the symbol has acquired a bad reputation due to ignorant people who do not know that the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSGWP or Nazis) did not call their symbol a "swastika." NSGWP members called their symbol a hakenkreuz (hooked cross) and they used it to represent crossed S-letters for their socialism under their National Socialist German Workers Party. See the work of the noted symbologist Dr. Rex Curry (author of "Swastika Secrets"). American socialists (e.g. Edward Bellamy, Francis Bellamy and the Theosophical Society) influenced German socialists in the use of the swastika to represent socialism. The ignorance about the "swastika" (hakenkreuz) was predicted long ago when Professor Max Muller discouraged Dr. Heinrich Schliemann in the careless use of the term "swastika" and referred to such ignorant people as "the vulgus profanum." The same people are ignorant of the fact that German national socialists did NOT refer to themselves as "nazis." NSGWP members referred to themselves as "socialists" (hence their use of the of the hakenkreuz to represent crossed S-letters for their "socialism"). Such people continue to defame the "swastika" symbol by their ignorance of the hakenkreuz and other symbols, rituals, meaning and terminology under German national socialists. For example, there is widespread ignorance of the fact that the German socialist's stiff-armed salute (and robotic chanting in unison) came from American socialists (Francis Bellamy, cousin of Edward Bellamy), and that the stiff-armed salute had been used in the USA's Pledge of Allegiance for about 3 decades before German socialists borrowed it. German socialists defamed the American salute as they defamed the "swastika," yet only because of ignorant people who still do not know the history. The stiff-armed salute developed because the early Pledge of Allegiance began with a military salute that was then extended outward to point at the flag (it was not an "ancient Roman salute" -another debunked myth repeated by the ignorant vulgus profanum). The above are part of the discoveries by Dr Curry (author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets").

The 70's is famed by all music history as the disco decade! People went to the ballroom with a glittering ball and neon colors everywhere. In that time it was pretty popular and catchy, it reigned over the decade and sensational and hip. Though in some cases defamed for having homosexuals attending it we should not be discouraged to continuosly go clubbing! The hit movie Saturday Night Fever gave rise to Disco in the mainstream thus later encouraging the existence of MTV later in the early 80's, music videos were often shown on other mainstream stations of the time (which is nowadays a total joke catering to reality shows, as Cartoon Network caters to crappy claymation and other bullshit). It is often humored and sometimes appears as a gays hangout place. Other popular music that entered the grooving ballroom was Hard Rock, Classic Rock and Metal. AC/DC was the big hit of the Hard Rock scene that wasn't nearly as public as Punk was. Classic rock was famed by The Rolling Stones and Aerosmith who helped give fuel to MTV. Metal was in developement and barely even established through the Alice Cooper era, but by the Black Sabbath and Motorhead era it spread. The Hippie phenomenon stayed strong through the early part of the 70's but by the late part, Punk rock changed the face of rock'n'roll forever! (which is why classic rock lovers hate new school rock) Of all the genres in pioneering and experimenting eras shared the media with disco who was the frontrunner on the radio and the sound of the 70's.

Protest Is Part of the National ‘Families Belong Together’ Day of Action With More Than 710 Events Nationwide

-- On Saturday, June 30th, [residents will rally at various locations as part of the Families Belong Together national day of action to protest the Trump Administration’s policy of forcibly separating children from their parents, the detention of families, and the fact that the Trump Administration has failed to reunite thousands of children with their parents.

WHEN: Saturday, June 30th. [TIME AM/PM TIME ZONE]

WHERE: [LOCATION]. [ADDRESS]

FOR MORE INFORMATION: [MOVEON LINK]

FACEBOOK EVENT LINK: [FB EVENT LINK]

LOCAL CONTACT: [NAME] | [NUMBER] | [EMAIL]

ORGANIZATIONAL SPONSORS INCLUDE: [USE THIS SECTION TO LIST ORGANIZATIONAL SPONSORS AND CO-SPONSORS WITH THEIR PERMISSION]

Say it loud, say it clear,

Immigrants are welcome here!

Say it loud, say it clear,

Refugees are welcome here!

Repeat“Courage” (listen):

Courage, my friend, you do not walk alone.

We will, walk with you, and sing your spirit home.

*Replace “Courage” with other words like “families” “immigrants” or “children”

When immigrant rights are under attack,

What will we do? Unite, fight back!

When refugee rights are under attack,

What will we do? Unite, fight back!

Repeat“May The Life I Lead” (listen):

Let the life I lead, speak for me. (x2)

When I get to the end of the road, and lay down my heavy load,

Let the life I lead, speak for me.

El pueblo unido

jamás será vencido!

(The people united, will never be defeated)

RepeatTo the tune of “Blessings” by Chance the Rapper (listen):

We gonna rise up, rise up till it’s won (x2)

When the people rise up, the powers come down (x2)

They try to stop us, but we keep comin’ back (x2)

Love, not hate, makes America great!

Repeat

“We are Family” by Sister Sledge

We are family, I got all my people with me

We are family, Get up ev'rybody and sing

We are family, I got all my people with me

We are family, Get up ev'rybody and sing

The Dutchess County Courthouse, built in 1912, is an attractive structure but hard to photograph due to its tight location. Famous Dutchess County lawyers include Franklin Roosevelt, G. Gordon Liddy, and Thomas Dewey. Notable trials here include a defamation case involving Al Sharpton and an early prosecution against Timothy Leary. Most significantly, however, a former courthouse at this site housed New York's ratification of the Constitution.

Da Vinci may rolling in his grave over my sullied version of his "Lady with an Ermine", but it's more likely Paris' new ferret goat ratdog weasel candidate-for-puppy-prozac is probably planning his demise (see Nicole Richie's cat). It's a grim fate for an animal, less preferable than dedicating itself to taxodermy. Despite Paris' God-given gift for misplacing pets, this pug may sleep easily at night knowing that if he should meet his end in a locked Benz parked in the sun for 8 hours on a hot summer day, he has a shot at being buried next to James Dean (Marilyn Monroe was already taken). I only pray this lil pug wiser than the rabid-devil-monkey, and goes for her jugular before he expires.

The Truth Exposed Behind the May 28 Zhaoyuan Case

In 2014, the CCP arbitrarily fabricated the notorious 5/28 Zhaoyuan Incident in Shandong Province to create the basis of public opinion for total suppression of house churches, and propagated falsehood globally to condemn and defame the Church of Almighty God. As a result, some unwitting parties who did not know the truth were deceived by the CCP's propaganda. In this program, several major doubts revolving around this case will be revealed to dissect the lies of the CCP one by one and clarify the facts for you, and utterly expose the truth behind the Shandong Zhaoyuan Incident before the world.

This is a large fragment from “CONCORDIA DISCORDANTIUM CANONUM DECRETUM GRATIANI”, the CORPUS IURIS CANONICI DECRETUM MAGISTRI GRATIANI. It was probably written at Pontigny Abbey, Burgundy, France, c.1160-1170.

On the recto of the fragment is the opening of “Causa V”, which concerns a defamation against a bishop secretly documented and written at length by the public prosecutor to proceed where the Bishop, once invited by letter, on the day appointed for their cause was not in good health, the judge himself represented by proxy without synodal apptoval and the audience is criticized.

The size of the fragment is 230mm x 148mm (9ins. x 5 8/10ins.), approximately one quarter of a complete leaf. (The size of a complete leaf [Cleveland Museum of Art CMA 54.598] is 435mm x 336mm [17 1/4ins. x 13 1/4ins.]).

The initial “I” that opens Causa V has a total height the equivalent to 24 lines. It has a height of 163mm (6 4/10ins.) high and is 68mm (2 5/8ins.) across the top. It is of an interlace design of pink and shades of green and has terminals in pink, green, grey and beige. THIS INITIAL IS SUPERB.

PROVENANCE: -

1. Almost certainly from the Cistercian abbey of Pontigny, and probably from the “Volumine uno, Decreta Gratiani”, no. 153 in the late twelfth-century catalogue of Pontigny, no. 100 in the early seventeenth-century catalogue, no. 235 in the catalogue of 1778, no. 7 in the catalogue of 1791, and finally no. 73 in the list prepared after the sequestration of Pontigny at the French Revolution, described there as “in-folio atlantico, elegans et completus”; dismembered probably in Auxerre in the early nineteenth century.

2. The fragment was purchased from a member of a French family who believed it to be part of the remains of a Prayer Book from a former medieval convent that the family has owned since 1843.

OTHER FRAGMENTS AND LEAVES

At the time of writing, the whereabouts of ten other fragments and two complete leaves is known. They are all in either museums or public libraries and are: -

1. Pars secunda, Causa 1, Cleveland Museum of Art, MS 54.531 (complete leaf).

2. Pars secunda, Causa 2, London, Victoria & Albert Museum, MS 8985 A.

3. Pars secunda, Causa 3, Free Library of Philadelphia, Lewis EM. 16: 9.

4. Pars secunda, Causa 10, London, Victoria & Albert Museum, MS 8985 E.

5. Pars secunda, Causa 14, London, Victoria & Albert Museum MS 8985 F.

6. Pars secunda, Causae 19-20, Lilly Library, Bloomington, Ricketts 205.

7. Pars secunda, Causa 22, London, Victoria & Albert Museum MS 8985 B.

8. Pars secunda, Causa 23, Free Library of Philadelphia, Lewis EM. 16: 8.

9. Pars secunda, Causae 24-25, Aberystwyth, National Library of Wales, MS 4874 E, no. 2.

10. Pars secunda, Causa 26, London, Victoria & Albert Museum MS 8985 C.

11. Pars secunda, Causa 27, London, Victoria & Albert Museum MS 8985 D.

12. Pars secunda, Causa 35, Auxerre, Bibliothèque municipale, ms 269 (complete leaf).

As the text goes up to Causa 36, it is probable that there are still 24 large initials unaccounted for. These may be either lost or in private collections.

CONDITION: -

The condition of this fragment does exhibit some imperfections. It has quite evidently been attached to a wall or furniture with drawing pins. There are six holes, three down each side, and rust marks to go with them. Because of this exposure, there has been some fading and part of the recto text has become a little blurred. There are small losses of text at the four corners on both sides. There is also one line of text where the ink has eaten through the vellum. Even with these imperfections, the fragment is a delight to the eye.

GENERAL COMMENTS: -

Not withstanding the minor condition problems, this is a large fragment of a leaf from what must have been a magnificent manuscript of a text that was compiled and written in the 12th century and which retained legal force for more that 750 years (until 1917). The manuscript was probably produced in the important Cistercian monastery of Pontigny in Burgundy about 1160-1170. Because of his conflict with Henry II, Saint Thomas Becket spent a period of nearly two years in exile (from December 1164) at Pontigny where, rather than meditating on higher things, he spent his time studying canon law. It is quite possible that the manuscript from which this fragment came, and even the fragment itself, could have been consulted by the saint in his studies.

North Dakota

The Little Shell Band of Chippewa Native Americans were the historic sub-band of the Pembina Band of Chippewa Indians led by Chief Little Shell in the nineteenth century. Based in North Dakota around the Pembina River, they were part of the large Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) tribe that occupied territory west of the Great Lakes by that time. Many had partial European ancestry from intermarriage by French-Canadian fur traders and trappers. Some began to identify as Métis, today recognized as one of the First Nations in Canada. Located in the 17th century in the areas around the Great Lakes, they gradually moved west into North Dakota and Montana.

Recognized successor apparent bands include the federally recognized Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, based in North Dakota, and the state-recognized Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians of Montana, which has been seeking federal recognition.

The so-called Little Shell Pembina Band of North America has not been recognized as a successor band, nor as Native American by any governmental body. Led by the members of the Chippewa Delorme family, most of its members are whites associated with "sovereign citizen" groups. It is classified as an extremist group by the Anti-Defamation League.

[ADDRESS]

ORGANIZATIONAL SPONSORS INCLUDE: [USE THIS SECTION TO LIST ORGANIZATIONAL SPONSORS AND CO-SPONSORS WITH THEIR PERMISSION]

Say it loud, say it clear,

Immigrants are welcome here!

Say it loud, say it clear,

Refugees are welcome here!

Repeat“Courage” (listen):

Courage, my friend, you do not walk alone.

We will, walk with you, and sing your spirit home.

*Replace “Courage” with other words like “families” “immigrants” or “children”

When immigrant rights are under attack,

What will we do? Unite, fight back!

When refugee rights are under attack,

What will we do? Unite, fight back!

Repeat“May The Life I Lead” (listen):

Let the life I lead, speak for me. (x2)

When I get to the end of the road, and lay down my heavy load,

Let the life I lead, speak for me.

El pueblo unido

jamás será vencido!

(The people united, will never be defeated)

RepeatTo the tune of “Blessings” by Chance the Rapper (listen):

We gonna rise up, rise up till it’s won (x2)

When the people rise up, the powers come down (x2)

They try to stop us, but we keep comin’ back (x2)

Love, not hate, makes America great!

Repeat

“We are Family” by Sister Sledge

We are family, I got all my people with me

We are family, Get up ev'rybody and sing

We are family, I got all my people with me

We are family, Get up ev'rybody and sing

Ricky Martin winning the Vito Russo Award at the GLAAD Media Awards

CCM Musical Theatre and the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center proudly present PARADE April 5 - April 21. Nominated for nine Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards, Parade dramatizes the 1913 trial of Jewish factory manager Leo Frank, accused and convicted of raping and murdering a thirteen-year-old employee, Mary Phagan. The trial, sensationalized by the media, aroused antisemitic tensions in Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

When Frank's death sentence was commuted to life in prison, a lynching party seized and kidnapped him. He was taken to Phagan's hometown of Marietta, Georgia, and hanged from an oak tree.

The events surrounding trial led to the emergence of two groups: the revival of the defunct Klu Klux Klan and the formation of the Anti-Defamation League.

With a score that draws on pop-rock, folk, rhythm and blues and gospel, PARADE is a timely and moving examination of a dark event in American history.
