Two Manly hydrofoils - out of the total fleet of five at this time - seen from the end of Manly Wharf and looking south. Hydrofoils operated across Sydney Harbour from Circular Quay to Manly Wharf between 1965 and 1991.

 

Vessel advancing at left of frame is Curl Curl, with Dee Why reversing at the right. Not at all a rare thing to have one hydrofoil reversing out from the hydrofoil pontoon concurrently with the next one making its approach.

At Dee Why, I captured a wave colliding with the rocks, just as the splash rose over the shelf.

"Construction commenced in 1960 by initially tracing the outline of the proposed structure in steel pipe scaffolding. Precast concrete elements forming the basic shape of the structure were then placed in position. High tensile steel wire was then drawn through and the whole structure was post tensioned , after which concrete infill panels were added".

I recently visited family in Norfolk and while down there, I went for a walk just outside Cromer where I saw this scene. I didn't have my DSLR with me, but I managed to get this on my phone

Early start @ Dee Why, place of eternal inspiration for long exposure shots. I am so happy to live in this magnificent country where sunrises are so beautiful and breathless.

A surfer at Dee Why Beach (Sydney).

The hydrofoil Dee Why turns about in front of Manly Wharf at the start of her next scheduled trip to Sydney. Here she has just reversed out from the floating hydrofoil pontoon - with its distinctive yellow perspex cladding - and is doing her usual 180 degree turn (one throttle pushed forward and other throttle astern).

 

In a few more seconds her bow will be pointed in the right direction and both throttles will be pushed forward all the way by the engineer in his right hand seat in the wheelhouse.

 

Dee Why's twin V12 high performance diesels will fully power up and push her up on to her foils - shaped not dissimilarly to aircraft wings - for the 35-knot trip across Sydney Harbour.

 

Hydrofoils operated on Sydney Harbour between Circular Quay and Manly Wharf from 1965 until 1991. At the time of this photo the NSW State Government operated a fleet of five in order to maintain (most of the time) a three-boat timetable between Circular Quay and Manly Wharf. The fast 10 km trip - running in parallel to the traditional Manly Ferries - took 15 minutes all up.

Commersonia hermanniifolia, an uncommon to rare plant in the mallow family. Found mostly in the Sydney area. Here at Curl Curl north headland, it is abundant, spreading strongly after recent fire.

So good not to have that bright light and nothing in the sky. Pete's knee is still not better, giving him a lot of grief so didn't get to go out yesterday. We just beat the rain this morning. Olga

Captured a bit of colour over the pool at Dee Why headland this morning.

Start 4.30 am for a photo session with Cathy Adams three times Miss Australia Female Bodybuilding and Ian Cameron her partner .

 

Marc Alexander and I wanted to create a different type of portfolio for Cathy and Ian.

So we opted for the outdoors instead of a studio. The Weather worked in our favour for the shoot.

 

Thank you Cathy, Ian and Marc for a wonderful and creative time.

He didn't land it

Taken yesterday morning on the Northern Beaches. The sky never lit up but I do like the colours in the sky. I've probably made it too contrasty, I think its a phase I've been going through for a while with my processing. I need to get back to being less colourful and more subtle I think.
