Day 38: February 7, 2010 - Dedication
Today I ran in the Condura 10k run. It was my first time to participate in a run that long. Normally I would participate in 3k and 5k runs, but I was finding 5k less of a challenge. Before I knew it, I was done with 5k.
10k was tough. I was glad I didn't succumb to attraction of running a 21k atop the Skyway. I had to keep an even pace. This was an hour-long run. I shouldn't blow off all my energy in the first half of the run. Somewhere around the 7k mark I had to slow down my pace. Several times I had the urge to stop and walk to catch my breath. But I had to toughen my resolve. I shouln't stop, I told myself. I can get through this. I ignored the pain that was gnawing my back. My right ankle felt like it was going to sieze but I ignored that as well.
It all paid off in the end. I expected to clock in at 70 minutes. With about 100 meters left, I saw the finish line and the clock. I saw that it was just seconds past the one hour mark. Not bad, I told myself, considering that several months ago I was clocking 35 minutes in a 5k treadmill run.
Now this may sound corny, but life and relatioships are just like that. You may prepare for it, but it is actually tougher than anything you can imagine. It takes mental resolve to get through it. If it is something you cherish and value, then quitting should not be an option.
