Museum Kaap Skil in Oudeschild is a comprehensive museum dedicated to the maritime history of the island of Texel. It focuses heavily on the island's central role during the 16th to 18th centuries, when the Reede van Texel (Texel Anchorage) off the coast was the largest and most important anchorage in the world, filled daily with ships from the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and others preparing for or returning from world trade. The museum's exhibitions cover a broad range of topics, including underwater archaeology, shipping, fishing, and the local tradition of beachcombing (or jutterij). Its distinctive, award-winning building, designed by Mecanoo, utilizes recycled hardwood from the North Holland Canal for its facade, reflecting the islanders' tradition of using washed-up materials.

The museum houses an impressive collection, with its most celebrated highlights coming from the discovery of the Palmwood Wreck, a 17th-century shipwreck found off the coast. This wreck yielded an array of extraordinarily well-preserved, exclusive treasures, including valuable textiles. The absolute top piece is a nearly intact 17th-century silk dress of "royal allure," along with a wedding dress adorned with silver thread. Beyond these textile finds, the museum showcases a wide selection of other recovered artifacts, such as a gilt silver cup and a luxurious toiletry set, which are exhibited in an intimate, low-lit basement area featuring an enormous 18-meter-long, 4-meter-deep scale model of the Reede van Texel that comes to life with light and sound effects.

In addition to its indoor exhibitions, Museum Kaap Skil features an extensive open-air museum area that transports visitors back to life on Texel a century or more ago. This section includes authentically reconstructed fishermen's cottages, a smithy, and the historic De Traanroeier grain mill. Throughout the year, and especially during holidays, the open-air grounds host live demonstrations of traditional maritime crafts such as net mending, rope making, and fish smoking. This combination of top-tier underwater archaeological finds, a detailed exploration of Texel's Golden Age maritime importance, and an immersive open-air experience makes Kaap Skil a multi-faceted and engaging destination for all ages.

A third film dedicated to the extraordinary botanical garden green houses, Parc de la Tête d'Or, Lyon, France, on February 27, 2023.

I used again a brand new 36-exposure Fujifilm Super X-Tra 400 film but this time with my Canon F-1 SLR camera (year 1973) and its wild-angle lens Canon FD 1:2.8 f=28mm (1979).

The film was exposed for 400 ISO following essentially the Canon F-1 "semi-selective" metering confirmed in some cases by my Minolta Autometer III fitted with a 10° finder for selective measurements privileging the shadow areas.

In the warmer and humid tropical green houses, I had to wait about 20 min to leave the camera temperature to equilibrate enough (outside temperature 6°C, inside 30°C) to get no water condensation.

The Canon FD lens was equipped with a Hoya "X-Dry" UV-protection filter (55mm) without shade hood.

After exposures the film was deposited for C-41 processing in local shop and was then film digitalized using a Sony A7 body fitted to a Minolta Slide Duplicator installed on a Minolta Auto Bellows III with a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5. The RAW files obtained were then processed in LR and finally edited to the final jpeg pictures.

All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg accompanied by documentary smartphone Vivio Y76 color pictures.

About the camera and the lens:

I bought this Canon F-1 a year ago in April 2022. The body is stamped "N1129" (in the film cartridge magazine) indicating that the camera body was manufactured in Japan in November 1973 while the FD 28mm lens is stamped "T102" on the rear baffle indicating a construction in the Canon factory in January 1979.

The camera was used very carefully with almost no sign of age. The photometric circuitry needs, as most of te SLR of that time, a 1.31V mercury oxide battery that I replaced by a Kanto MR9 adaptor for a SR43 silver oxide battery.
