The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is a memorial site in France dedicated to the memory of Canadian Expeditionary Force members killed during the First World War. It also serves as the place of commemoration for First World War Canadian soldiers killed or presumed dead in France who have no known grave. The monument is the centrepiece of a 100-hectare (250-acre) preserved battlefield park that encompasses a portion of the ground over which the Canadian Corps made their assault during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, a military engagement fought as part of the Battle of Arras.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge was the first occasion on which all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force participated in a battle as a cohesive formation, and thus became a Canadian national symbol of achievement and sacrifice. France ceded to Canada perpetual use of a portion of land on Vimy Ridge on the understanding that the Canadians use the land to establish a battlefield park and memorial. Wartime tunnels, trenches, craters and unexploded munitions still honeycomb the grounds of the site, which remains largely closed off for reasons of public safety. Along with preserved trench lines, a number of other memorials and cemeteries are contained within the site.
The memorial took monument designer Walter Seymour Allward eleven years to build. King Edward VIII unveiled the memorial on 26 July 1936, in the presence of French President Albert Lebrun, 50,000 or more Canadian and French veterans, and their families. Following an extensive multi-year restoration, Queen Elizabeth II rededicated the memorial on 9 April 2007 during a ceremony commemorating the 90th anniversary of the battle. The memorial site is one of two National Historic Sites of Canada located outside of Canada and is maintained by Veterans Affairs Canada (the other is the Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial).

The Illinois Firefighter Memorial is dedicated to the firefighters of Illinois, who have given their lives in the line of duty and to those firefighters who heroically serve with courage, pride and honor.
The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, working with the Secretary of State's office and a nationally recognized sculptor, developed a memorial in which the fire service of Illinois will be proud. The artist designed and constructed an original bronze work of art consisting of four life-size figures of firefighters in full gear, a child, a ladder, and hose. Each adult figure is approximately 6ft 2in tall if in a standing position and represents the firefighters in full protective clothing, in action. The art was created through the "lost wax" method of bronze casting and is finished in an antique bronze fire-on patina suitable for exterior exhibition, signed and dated by the artist. The figures are situated on a cairn 14 feet high consisting of Renaissance stone. There are 2,400 red paver bricks which are enclosed by a 2 foot wall with capstones engraved with contributor's names.
It is here each year, at the Illinois Firefighter Memorial, that we honor those who have made the supreme sacrifice. The Annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial and Firefighter Medal of Honor Awards Ceremony is held each year in early May.

U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton held its Quarterly Workforce Town Hall and Awards Ceremony on July 14, 2023, at the Fort Hamilton Theatre. The ceremony recognized the outstanding contributions, achievements, and years of service of Garrison workforce members to the Fort Hamilton community. Awards were presented by Col. Brian Jacobs, garrison commander; Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher Hill, garrison sergeant major; and Mr. Robert Perkins, interim deputy to garrison commander. Q: What do those plaques in sidewalks and streets that read "SPACE WITHIN THESE LINES NOT DEDICATED" mean?
A: After receiving this question from two different readers on the very same day, PW placed an urgent call to Streets Department spokeswoman Cynthia Hite, who copiously researched the practice, tracing it all the way back to jolly, old England. "Dedicated" space, Hite explains, refers to public property used, say, for streets and sidewalks. There are two ways to open a new street. The first and most common method is by affidavit. British common law, she says, allowed a practice known as "adverse possession." This means that if you care for a piece of land for a certain amount of time and no one tries to boot you off the land, you get to claim it. "The same philosophy applies to the city," she says. "Under state law ground must be in public use for 21 years. At that time affidavits can be filed with the Department of Streets stating, by at least three citizens, that this ground has been an open street for at least 21 years." "Dedication" is the other method for opening a street. In this case, says Hite, a land owner dedicates part of their property to public use, such as a street or a sidewalk. "When a person places one of these markers in the sidewalk," she continues, "they are accomplishing two purposes. One, they are stating the ground behind the marker is private, not public, and they are also putting people on notice that this is not a street and therefore cannot be opened by affidavit." Bet those office tower owners are breathing a little easier now.

Marker Text: Legendary baseball team that dominated the Negro Baseball Leagues during the first half of the 20th century. Founded by steelworkers in 1900, the Grays inspired African Americans locally and across the nation. Led by Cumberland Posey Jr., they won 12 national titles, including 9 in a row, 1937-45. Players included Hall of Famers Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, and Smokey Joe Williams. Disbanded in 1950.
