so funny story...

we did move here with a truck-but it was a rather small one-and def. could not fit all of our furniture inside.

so, even though i felt like i decluttered before the move-it doesn't really look that way in our house!

ah...soon enough though we'll get some shelves....

I know, decluttering or neatening can be and often is overwhelming. Especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. My Aide, Heather, insists I make three piles, the third pile being

'3. Not Sure'

Here is my shortened process:

1. Discard Now!

2. Must keep and I know where to put it (30 second limit to think of a place or it goes to the Discard Now pile.)

Much to my surprise, I have discovered that once an item is discarded, I never regret or miss it. And it feels so good to have a completely decluttered area‼️🌹

I've had a very productive day decluttering, so I rewarded myself by processing some photos.

This chrysanthemum was from a bunch of flowers I received for my birthday in the midst of Perth's hard lockdown in the early months of the pandemic. Photographing the beautiful flowers was a much needed distraction at a time when I couldn't go outside.

Started the year off with decluttering and reorganising parts of the house; the process actually took up more time than I had originally anticipated, but it does feel good to have the closets in order and the donation pile growing.

Figured I'd start off the year by showcasing this beautiful handcrafted origami tree, that probably has a proper name but I've forgotten. It was made for me by an amazing person and sits proudly on display in my dining room for any guest to admire.

I'll probably shoot this again someday; as my original idea for this is not what I shot today, but couldn't resist showing it off any longer.

This is a compliation of 5 shots, stacked together and then processed in Photoshop. Of course though, when showcasing something so beautiful, I don't feel I've done it justice.

Anyway, hope everyone has had a good day. It's a quick upload for me this evening, but I will be playing catch up with everyone's streams either later tonight or tomorrow.

the dilemma: we have not yet exchanged contracts, so moving is not definite, but we seem to be nearing the day when it will happen. I have been giving away furniture to family and friends, because I have a very good idea of what will fit in our intended smaller home (I've drawn scale plans . . . can't help my past in garden design!) - however - Peter is being circumspect and taking a trickle of decluttering to the charity shop. When we exchange, everyone in the chain (except one at the top end) wants to move quickly . . . so, am I counting my chickens before they're hatched?

so near the end of my holiday photos now.

So busy with decluttering the house, looking at potential homes and talking about what we need, what we don't want, this and that . . . so this is really a post and run, although I shall be back to catch up soon. Not sleeping well which plays havoc with concentration, but is quite good for introspection and allowing things which would normally be hidden to come to the surface.

Having completely decluttered due to a house move 2 years ago, it appears I am becoming a human Magpie again, filling my home with pointless, shiny objects. I googled 'human Magpie' and found the following:

Nine reasons why people have clutter -

1. You have a busy life.

2. You're comfortable with mess.

3. You've suffered an illness or a bereavement.

4. Your life is out of balance.

5. You or someone close to you has cared for someone through a period of depression or illness.

6. One or both parents was a collector/hoarder/inventor or creative.

7. You're struggling with loneliness.

8. Your personality type.

9. We live in a consumer society.

Or indeed none of the above.

This is a result of decluttering and "internal recycling". As I process my photos, I like to jot notes for potential titles, keywords, etc -- scrap paper and pencil (ancient technologies!) work well for this. As I was working in my closet, I came across a large glass bowl with pens and pencils collected and saved over eons. I recognize one from 60 years ago (link to another photo below). Given that they were plentiful and colorful (I will never use these before meeting the Grim Reaper), I thought I would use them for my 366 project.

Since I last passed through Gare du Nord some seven years earlier, SNCF has done some tidying up that now enables an unobstructed view from the Eurostar check-in area of the Grandes Lignes rolling stock. hello everyone,

sasha is at the rainbow bridge right now,we have lost a part of us too soon today.I don't know how to write about grief because this is the worst thing that has happened to us both and i am not sure how to express myself here.

she has been ill the last few days and today she was put down and went to sleep..the vet came and gave her the injections so that she will not suffer much. She died in our home with us and not in some scary vet practice,so we thank our vet for coming all the way to our home for this.

we have done all we could for her not to suffer, the vet also said she wouldn't last a week with the condition she is in.

It feels surreal all this and we both have shed many tears for her.

She has had a wonderful life with us,i hope she remembers us up there,we both got sasha when michael and i started dating, when she was only 2 months old..so you can say she is like our child.

She lived with us in indonesia for a year, then we moved to germany and stayed there for three years, then we moved to england and stayed there for five years and now she has come back to her country of origin and died here..

we're collecting her remains in a few days because i don't want her to be buried in an awful place all alone and we are somewhere across the world..

i have kept myself very busy today,i cleaned the damn house, tidied everything, decluttered, put things away..anything to keep my mind off her departure.

she went very bravely and we kissed her goodbye...

i want to share this with all my friends here as you all have known here from since i started flickr...

I had intended to take serendipitous pictures of my room at the top - but I must have been caught up elsewhere and forgotten about my intention. This is the room that has to be downsized most. In the new house I shall have a small study which will also have a single bed in it for visitors and for me to lounge on to read/listen to music. I have had the luxury of space up here in my old office and a built in wardrobe which has acted as a stationery cupboard (ye gods!).

Catching up is happening, but taking time. My mind isn't properly on the job, but I am enjoying your photos as and when I visit your streams . . .

I've been working on decluttering, sorting, shredding, filing, and consolidating (mostly paperwork) for some time now. Before I strike a new system, for dealing with papers, the pile keeps getting bigger not smaller.

Draping a blanket over it, for now, has made all of us happy.

Those poor shoes that have been kicked out of the closet will be burned tomorrow in a garbage incinerator!

Project 365, 2022: Day 240/365

Our ideas of how to live in this house have evolved a lot since we moved here in 2015. We originally intended to use the living room as a craft and project room with Danny's office in the far corner. By 2019 the room had evolved into a big storage area with a path through it, not good. We undertook a major de-stashing and de-cluttering, partly with the purpose of being able to invite friends over. We achieved some space by February 2020 -- and we all know what happened then. Over the next two years, more clutter collected. We made enough room so that in January 2021 I could realize a long, long dream of buying a piano. Much of the room remained a disorganized no-man's land. For all this time, the basement had contained a small man-cave where we could hang out together and watch TV while eating dinner. This summer we decluttered the basement space so Danny could move his office down there. We had to move the two hutches, the smaller one going into an unused corner of the kitchen, the big antique one moving across the room. The armchairs, coffee table and flat screen came upstairs to recreate our sitting space with more elbow room. Finally this afternoon, I removed the last of the clutter. Now there's enough space to bring more chairs if we want to have friends over. Or we can set up spinning wheels and spin while listening to music. Ok, the stash on the hutch still needs attention but at least it's out of the way. The pile of music books on the piano signifies happiness. It's a cheerful room with afternoon sunlight and a tropical garden in the window, a comfortable place to spend time.

Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.

There you are, sitting in the office, as usual, working away.

Look away from the screen for a moment and what do you see? How tidy is your desk? Is it an open-plan office? Is there a view out of the window?

What is minimalism?

Whenever I tell someone I’m a minimalist, they look at me like I just told them I’m waiting for a comet to return me to the motherland.

Defining minimalism is a bit difficult, as it’s more a lifestyle than personality trait.

However, we see minimalism in terms of meaningfulness. We don’t need stuff to make us happy or fulfill unmet desires.

We want to live intentionally, and we feel like minimalism helps us do that. We focus more on experiences, meaningful work, and people than we do on things.

At the same time, it doesn’t mean we live in isolation without electricity. We still buy things. We just try to be extremely intentional when we do so. We’re always asking – “Is this something I need?” and “Is this the best tool for what I’m trying to do?”

Minimalism is the opposite of consumerism and the violent grasp of living intentionally.

Why does minimalism allow you to “pursue your passions”?

This is a two-fold answer that still leaves more unsaid than said. However, minimalism helps us do what we’re doing in two ways:

1) We don’t overspend. Once we realized that we could be sustained on very little, it meant we don’t need six-figure jobs to support our lifestyle. That means we can consider work we find meaningful and fulfilling first, and let the money thing work itself out.

2) We invest saved money into businesses, ideas, and dreams. Sometimes this is direct – we save more and therefore have more money to spend on the tools we need. And sometimes it’s indirect – we don’t need a lot of money, so we have jobs that require less time, which translates into spending more time on things we care about doing.

In short, something is always going to take your time and money. And if we aren’t living intentionally, we end up spending our time and money on things we don’t really care about.

Why do minimalists own so few things?

Although some minimalists have goals of owning “X” amount of things, we’re not really like that. We just like to have only what we find necessary.

Sure, we sometimes buy something we don’t need. But we’ve also become much more adept at realizing when this happens and quickly try to sell it or give it away.

For a minimalist, it’s just as easy to ask the question “why do people own so many things?” To us, things are an obligation and a weight. If they aren’t worth it, we don’t keep it.

Do you really save money being a minimalist? How?

We have saved money in three important ways:

1) We spend less buying things.

2) Spend less maintaining things. Everything we own is a choice to not have the money it is worth (resell value). If we could sell something and we decide to keep it, we view ownership as a cost of keeping that thing. If the cost outweights the benefit, we get rid of it. Secondly, things break, wear down, and just lose value. That costs us money, too. Owning fewer things means we have less maintenance/ownership costs.

3) We buy higher quality items. Yes, we buy things and we’re usually the people with the €300 coat instead of the €150 one. Say what you will, but we buy based on value. If we don’t love something, we don’t buy it. Since I only have one pair of jeans, I only buy jeans that I’m happy wearing every day. It might be more upfront, but I know which jeans wear out quickly (and, as a side benefit, I keep my jeans until they wear out - something I never did before).

How do you get rid of things?

We are still getting rid of things, but it definitely starts with a conscious decision to live differently.

I’d love to overcomplicate this and give you a decluttering plan and all these other things to “help” people get rid of things, but that never really worked for me.

You know how to get rid of things, what you’re really asking is “why should I get rid of things?”

And in a funny way, the times I’ve found most beneficial are when I’ve started out being content with where I am at. I’ve found that when I’m secure in myself, I realize that I really don’t need all this crap to make me happy. When I go into a decluttering session with that mindset, it’s a beautiful dance of liberation and reaffirmation.

Once you answer that for yourself, the best advice I have is to just start. The closet is always a great place to begin. It’s fast, it’s overstuffed, and you hate half of it anyway.

Once you’ve cleaned out a space, you start to realize more things that don’t fit or are unnecessary. Continue to pare down and reevaluate. It can take months or years, but that liberation is a fire that can blaze a new trail of life.

How has minimalism impacted your life?

Although I loved the feeling of being rid of many of my things years ago, and even more so a year ago, I feel like it’s really opening up a new season of life.

Sure, minimalism brings all these benefits of cost savings, less distraction, and simpler life, but I think it does something else.

I don’t quite have the words yet, but I think it helps me become more available to opportunities. If a really great opportunity comes across my plate, I have the flexibility to take it.

More importantly, it’s changed the way I think. I no longer think working for myself has to be a stressful, cumbersome combination of chance and luck. It’s just living intentionally and learning to keep an open mind.

I want to live a simpler life. Where do I start?

Really, I think you need to start with the resolve of “why” I’m doing what I’m doing. That’s why I think the work of these bloggers/authors is absolutely phenomenal. They focus on the “whys” rather than the “how tos.”

You know how to get rid of things. You know how to sell things and drive to the goodwill.

Sometimes tactics help (I really like zoning off a section and just deciding to go through it), but at the end of the day, just doing something will always trump planning.

For wild inspiration, read The Minimalists, Becoming Minimalist, and Zen Habits.

Can minimalism help me get out of debt?

Yes. But it’s probably easiest to just start spending less than you make. And sell anything you can.

Anything else?

I hate writing about minimalism too much in this fashion, because I feel like it’s very preachery.

Please, the last thing I want to do is tell you how to live your life. If you’re happy with the trajectory and what you own in life, please keep doing it.

We wanted to make a change and getting rid of the crap that keeps us from living intentionally was a great way to do so. It also freed many of our financial obligations and led to opportunities we never would have otherwise experienced.

We know what it’s like to feel stuck and in a rut. We were there. We didn’t like it. We’ve changed. And minimalism was a huge catalyst for that.

Tintin and Snowy was created by the Belgian french artist Georges Rémi(1907–1983, under the pen name of Herge). The series follows the adventures of a young reporter Tintin and his Fox Terrier, Snowy. The wildly imaginative Herge made Tintin a true globe trotter who traveled a lot of countries and even to the moon itself to solve mysteries. Not without controversies, Tintin was popular among young and old as well.

Ms. Cheeky's Workshop Exercise # 4: Shoot What You Love

I often walk to this spot after work. It's a place I love. I'm beginning to work more on night and twlight shots. No tripod, so I set my camera on the railing, with a 2 second delay. But if someone else happens to walk on the boardwalk and shake it, then the photo shakes. I'm learning how to set slightly longer exposures than my auto setting will provide.

For the exercise: I tried to follow the rule of thirds, and have the boat harbour in the lower third, and not have the horizon line divide the photo in half. I tried to follow the rule of decluttering- although the dark land on the right maybe detracts. Still, I liked the curve in the water where it meets the land, echoing the cloud curves in the sky. I did a slight crop in order to de-clutter a little. I tried to pay attention to light. It was twlight, and the sun was off to the right (picture is taken facing south). It was long past sunset. Hence, I had to use a longer exposure, and then I used a few Photoshop touches to lighten it up a little and to "de-noise". I like the play of light on the water, and the flow of light from right to left.

I am open to all feedback and criticism. I do see that the de-noising process added some loss of detail to the boat lights in the distance. I probably needed to use an even longer exposure to capture this better.
