I spent several hours at the Deception Falls Nature Area near Stevens Pass, Washington where I photographed my favorite little pool, that I call the Grotto, which is on an offshoot of Deception Creek below the big waterfall. I was there for the sunrise and left after lunch when the light became dappled and hard to get a good exposure. This image was near sunrise as the light began to stream through the forest.

A typical spring view as you walk through this mature second growth forest.

This is a macro shot. These mushrooms are tiny. The lens is only inches from the mushrooms.

Cairn have been used for ages to mark trails keeping people on the correct path. In our wilderness areas they have become quite overused being build where the trail is obvious, I hate this practice and have been known to knock over a few. However, when they are build as an artistic impression I do enjoy them. These small one were not the best I've seen but a very enjoyable sight as I walked along the trail.

The upper reaches of Deception Falls

I have photographed this little waterfall many times at different times of the year. I just love it!

Alongside Hwy 2 on Stevens Pass in Washington.

David lines up a shot with a 5-stop ND filter. Note the beautiful crystal clear water.

Not far below the falls Deception Creek divides and a second small branch travels through the forest this branch stays confined to it's banks.

As Deception Creek travels to join the Tye River it makes an abrupt right-angle bend as it hits a resistant rock layer. Most of the year when the flow is low it does not flow over that rock layer but in the spring it does and forms this small waterfall and pool. The white mist in the background is from the creek crashing into the rock layer.

OK, here we go... Back on 2 Deception behind me... The the overcast gave way.

I stopped here quickly to get this shot thinking it was the Panorama I love to see when I travel on 2. Well, it wasn't... It was a mile or so further.

I'll get it one of these days! It's just that 2 really isn't a great road to pull over on. Not much shoulder to lean on. :)

One of my favorite sites in this little natural area is this pool which is just off the trail. I have photographed it many times (see previous albums) so grabbed this closeup image and processed to black and white.

Another one of those unintended pull offs along HWY 2 in Washington. Glad we stopped. It was a really pretty area. The cascades at the bottom of the falls were actually more interesting than the falls themselves. I believe this is still part of the Skykomish River.

Deception Creek flows into the Tye River and the nature trail provides two wonderful deck overlooks allowing one to witness the power of the water crashing over the bedrock. This image is looking directly down from the deck at the layered rock ledges.

"...and the river bank sings of the waters of March, it the promise of life it's the joy in your heart" Antonio Carlo Jobim

He may have got the month wrong but the waterways in the Northwest are definitely "singing" as they overflow with the spring snow melt and and recent rains.

I spent several enjoyable hours exploring and photographing at Deception Creek Fall Recreation Area on US Route 2 near Stevens Pass.

The creek crashes over a second smaller drop where the mist shoots high into the air and catches the sun light to form this double rainbow.

I would usually photograph these falls with a slow shutter speed, however, I decided to capture the mighty spring runoff with a faster shutter to freeze the action. I certainly would not want to fall in!!
