Sailors led by Joseph Whidbey, part of the Vancouver Expedition, found and mapped Deception Pass on June 7, 1792. George Vancouver gave it the name "Deception" because it had misled him into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula. The "deception" was heightened due to Whidbey's failure to find the strait at first. Deception Pass connects Skagit Bay, part of Puget Sound, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The pass flows between Whidbey Island and Fidalgo Island. Its maximum depth is 145 feet. A pair of bridges known collectively as Deception Pass Bridge span Deception Pass. The bridges were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Deception Pass, Oak Harbor, Wash. 13 June 2022

Another useless fact - this bridge (although you can't see it in the picture) was shown in the horror movie The Ring (which happened to be on TV the night I got home from here).
We can see both Both Canoe Pass and Deception Pass Bridges from our vantage points on either side of the pass.
