Looking north, with Deception and Fidalgo Islands in the distance. Deception Pass to the right.

"A group of sailors led by Joseph Whidbey, part of the Vancouver Expedition, found and mapped Deception Pass on June 7, 1792. George Vancouver gave it the name "Deception" because it had misled him into thinking Whidbey Island was a peninsula. The "deception" was heightened due to Whidbey's failure to find the strait at first. Vancouver apparently felt he and Joseph Whidbey had been deceived by the tricky strait. Vancouver wrote of Whidbey's efforts: "This determined [the shore they had been exploring] to be an island, which, in consequence of Mr. Whidbey’s circumnavigation, I distinguished by the name of Whidbey’s Island: and this northern pass, leading into [Skagit Bay], Deception Passage."

A rather confusing area to get to know in a sail ship like they were using.

Enjoy a wonderful Wednesday!

Getting near the north end of the south bridge as it nears Pass Island. Strawberry Island in the center. Ben Ure Island now in view on the right beyond the tip of Whidbey Island.

Ben Ure Island has quite a disreputable and sad history, which I will share tomorrow with the better view from the north channel between Fidalgo and Pass Islands.

Enjoy a wonderful Wednesday!

Looking east from the south bridge on a stormy day with Strawberry Island in the distance.

"Deception Pass is a dramatic seascape where the tidal flow and whirlpools beneath the twin bridges connecting Fidalgo Island to Whidbey Island move quickly. During ebb and flood tide current speed reaches about 8 knots (9.2 mph), flowing in opposite directions between ebb and flood. This swift current can lead to standing waves, large whirlpools, and roiling eddies. This swift current phenomenon can be viewed from the twin bridges' pedestrian walkways or from the trail leading below the larger south bridge from the parking lot on the Whidbey Island side. Boats can be seen waiting on either side of the pass for the current to stop or change direction before going through. Thrill-seeking kayakers go there during large tide changes to surf the standing waves and brave the class 2 and 3 rapid conditions." Wikipedia

Thanks for taking a look. Always appreciated!

Snow-covered Deception Pass Bridge today

Deception Pass is a strait separating Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island, in the northwest part of the U.S. state of Washington. It connects Skagit Bay, part of Puget Sound, with the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

A view of the larger of the two bridges that connect Washington's Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island and the mainland.

"The bridge, one of the scenic wonders of the Pacific Northwest, is actually two spans, one over Canoe Pass to the north, and another over Deception Pass to the south. Pass Island lies between the two bridges. Construction began in August 1934, and the completed bridge was dedicated at noon on July 31, 1935." Wikipedia

I'll continue posting a few more shots of the bridge and pass over the next few days.

Thank you for any comments, faves or suggestions.

Looks can be deceiving as this big Grizzly Boar seems to not mind this Wolf sniffing close to his Elk kill. However, if you look closely you will see the claws close at hand (paw).

You've seen the south Deception Pass Bridge from various angles, heres looking north thru it's intricate and sturdy frame.

"In 1982, the bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places ahead of a repainting project that cost more than the original construction cost. A second repainting was completed in 1997. A third repainting project began in May 2019 and is expected to be completed in late 2021 at a cost of $22.6 million. The bridge will retain its current color, named "Evergreen Green", using lead-free paint. Wiki

Thanks for following along as I shared my experiences seeing, walking and exploring these two iconic Pacific NW bridges.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Christmas is near.....

Safe travels!

“All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.” -Sun tzu,

When I first saw the duck I freely confess, "What have I found," only to figure out it was but a Green winged Teal glowing in the sunlight to produce this radiant color......

On the last episode of Dev Party, I had my first experience with developing with PMK Pyro - a developer that my co-host, Vania, egged me into trying.

The first results were a success! I really loved what I saw! The grain, often very pronounced in Ilford's Pan F+, was there, but almost smeared down. You can't really even call it grain, maybe.

I can't say that PMK will be my go-to developer forever, but for now, I really dig it, and will be using it for most of whatever we're calling the summer this year.

Deception Pass, Washington

May 2020

A view of both bridges, with Pass Island in between them. They are approximately 180 feet above the water, depending up the tides.

"This great achievement began with an idea from a New England seaman, Captain George Morse, who sailed through the narrow, turbulent waterway called Deception Pass and eventually settled in the tiny village of Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. Pointing at the two promontories of Whidbey and Fidalgo in the 1880s, he told his children that “one day we will have a bridge across this pass with Pass Island as a center support.” Fifty years later, with the persistent work of citizens and legislators, and the public works support of the Great Depression, the bridge became a reality.

The bridge is remarkable in many ways. The simple flowing lines of its arched steel structures complement the surrounding land and enhance the area’s visual drama. Its two sections, a 511 foot structure from Fidalgo to Pass Island and a 975 foot structure from Pass to Whidbey Island, show how the cantilever truss had evolved into an attractive, functional form. The bridges are twenty-eight feet wide, with two lanes and two sidewalks."

Walking those sidewalks is recommended if you're here. The views on both sides are gorgeous. I'll show some of those views soon.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Found a little perch on the side of a rock. The water levels are pretty high right now and the falls were really going.

Deception Pass Bridge is the common name for two, two-lane bridges on Washington State Route 20 connecting Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island in the U.S. state of Washington. It was a Washington State Highways project, and included project elements built by young workers from the Civilian Conservation Corps. Completion of the bridge was a factor in the decision to build Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and helped Oak Harbor flourish. The bridge is a commonly photographed landmark of the Puget Sound region.

Might have gone a little overboard with the local adjustments here.

A Eastbound BNSF S Train Heads Up The Pass At Deception Creek On The BNSF Scenic Sub. The Rain Provided For An Awesome Light Cone Show!

First off, my appologies on my tardiness, we are on mandatory overtime and with my job I work more hours than anyone else to start with so no play time for me.

Now, Deception! I loved reading the story here as the great 'discoverer', George Vancouver, was fooled by this narrow channel into thinking Whidbey Island was a Peninsula and it wasn't until rowboats were sent in that they figured out that Whidbey and Fidalgo were islands. This iconic bridge spans the two islands and is also on the nations list of historic places was built in 1935 after only one year however it's inauguration was delayed by a day due to the center span not fitting. They realized that the summer heat had caused expansion and so at 1 am they came back to set it, perfect fit. :-) Washington State says the Deception State Park is the most frequented park in the state and judging by the crowds that I saw, I'd agree. Long way to go to photograph a bridge, but Tonia went with so it was all the better.

Tucked away along Highway 2 in the Cascades, Deception Falls is a hidden gem of Washington’s wilderness. Crystal-clear water rushes through moss-covered rock and cedar forest, filling the air with the sound of pure mountain energy. This short hike feels like stepping into another world.

An attempt to make something out of nothing on a cloudy and dreary afternoon. I used the mist stripe filter to hide the distant shoreline (deception), and the gold-n-blue polarizer dialed to gold to later pick up highlights in the foreground rock using an orange filter in post (more deception).

This was taken from the Deception Pass Bridge. The current that flows in and out of this area is incredible. A funnel that leads to the Puget Sound.

Deception Pass sunset last night

At the last minute and at the end of a thunderstorm I decided to race out, hoping to catch a little bit of a sunset. With my lady along for the ride we forged ahead. Unfortunately we did not anticipate the brutality of the wind and cold. Even though the storm had passed the remnants remained, and we were hammered with 50 mile per hour wind gusts, and 30 degree temperatures. Strong enough winds that it was able to move and shake my truck. I tried my hardest to capture the scene. Please forgive the edit.
