While I was taking my buttons and bows photo for the Macro Mondays group theme for this week. I was also having a play around with dark and light backgrounds with the Panasonic and Fuji to get the best result I could.
The light was horrible, but then it's been like that for ages, so I should be used to it! I took everything out onto the garden table, where I wasn't fighting the inside light and took loads of different photos with both cameras.
The Fuji won out on my Macro Mondays contribution, but also won out when it came to my photo for today.

Some parts of England had a first taste of wintry weather yesterday. Fortunately I still have some images from my trip to Arctic Norway in 2015. Very useful I can post a winter shot without having to go out into the snow. I still don’t know how Mary managed to persuade me to venture that far north in December. I know I am supposed to “embrace winter” but I sadly fail this test, its like embracing toothache
The image is the harbour at Tromso on the far side of the fiord you can just see the very modernistic Arctic cathedral. This was taken at 10.30 a.m. so its not technically a night shot though it might as well be

Spent a few days last December playing in the snow of the San Juan's. I love winter there! The snow made everything look so clean and simplistic. We would drive a bit and see what wildlife we could find moving around.
If you have never taken Slumgullion Pass, it is no joke coming out of Lake City. It is a steep, winding climb as you head back towards Creede.

A scene in December in New England. No snow has yet fallen - it has been unseasonably warm - but the skies threaten a storm.
December 14 was the last day the venerable EETC 1254 brought the Jan Kiepura train to and from Amsterdam CS. EETC lost the contract to NSR. Railfans from all over the country came to Amsterdam to catch a glimpse of the 60 year old American designed engine (GE/Westinghouse) on its last duty.

After a year of traverse occurrence, Christmas is here.
All I can say is that halfway through this year I made a pact to run away… The only thing that stopped me was to make this year's Christmas a very merry one.
Last Christmas, was quite possibly, the worst one in my families history.
With my Grandfathers death looming on my fathers mind, we were anything but connected.
Today… we were back.
Whilst there were a few pausing moments for reflection, which brought about a few silencing tears.
Generally it was one of "moveforwardeth".
I know that isn't a word, but it was the only way I could express it.
I am very lucky to be apart of a family, that if we go through shit, each member does it's part to move forward. We also try to move each member to the same common ground no matter how long it takes.
I have met a lot of family units that peruse their own individual agendas and it leaves each family member floundering and trying to discover not only their own ground but their place in the pack.
I am not saying we've found the formula to a family success…
Not by a long shot.
I just feel great to be apart of an ever evolving family unit.
I don't think I appreciate it as much as I should…. and if I do… I don't say it as much as I should.
I guess what I am trying to say is…
Christmas is about family, really.

It was the last day of the year and I found myself down by Coney Beach. Not really taking photos since I was helping supervise a group of children who were in a hurry to get to the beach. There was a hard, low and bright sun. I managed to grab a couple of shots as we walked along the promenade.

Friendly Sea Birds..
The Lake Ontario shoreline was dotted with gulls, geese, ducks and more swans than I have seen in one place in a long time. The gulls seemed especially active coming very close as we approached the shore then suddenly veering off. I assume they are accustomed to being fed at the shoreline by well meaning and kind hearted people. though I have never done this, so what does that say about me then. LOL

Op 8 december 2012 reed de Stoom Stichting Nederland hun jaarlijkse Kerstexpress, de kerstrit ging dit jaar van Rotterdam Centraal via Utrecht en Eindhoven naar Maastricht, vanaf daar werd de reis vervolgd naar Valkenburg waar de reizigers de kerstmarkten in de grotten konden bezoeken en ging de trein door naar de ZLSM spoorlijn om gereed gemaakt te worden voor de terugreis om in de avond via dezelfde route weer terug te rijden. De weersomstandigheden waren deze dag optimaal; in Limburg lag er nog aardig wat sneeuw en was het lekker koud zodat de SSN 01 1075 een flinke rookpluim uitstootte. Onder de hierbij in het niets vallende rook van de papierrecycling Smurfit Kappa Papier dendert trein 38100 met 5 Bm-rijtuigen en het Mitropa-restauratierijtuig in sneltreinvaart door het station van Roermond. Achterop reist de SMMR 2225 mee omdat in Maastricht wegens werkzaamheden aan het emplacement de loc niet omgelopen kon worden en als backup voor mogelijke problemen aan de 01 naar aanleiding van de rit van vorige week. De 01 heeft de sneeuw en kou echter prima doorstaan evenals de fotograaf.
Today, 14 December 2020, is the start of this year's Christmas Bird Counts. The last Count is scheduled for 5 January 2021. Some Counts have been cancelled or else have put a low limit on the number of participants. Strict rules have been put in place because of the present situation. These Counts have been my Christmas for quite a few years. Something I greatly look forward to each year. However, this year, I will not be taking part, partly because I feel that with participant numbers being limited, the people with the very best birding skills should be the ones who go. I would feel very selfish if I took up a place. Also, being unable to carpool, there is no way I would be able to drive in the dark, with lousy night vision, at the beginning and end of the day. These wonderful day outings will be missed SO much and, of course, I will miss out on all the precious photo opportunities that I would be able to happily use. Instead, though, I can always go for a few drives out of the city, depending on the weather.
I am adding the description that I wrote under the only photo I have previously posted that was taken on the annual Audubon High River Christmas Bird Count, 20 December 2016. Not sure why I had only posted one image, but most likely it was because I was just too busy with other Counts and never got round to it.
"The day before yesterday, 20 December 2016, was the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count for the town of High River, roughly 40 minutes' drive south of Calgary. This is one of my favourite Counts and I'm so glad that I managed to take part. I wasn't sure if I would feel well enough to go, thanks to the dizziness/light-headedness that I've had the last nine days. Had a doctor's appointment yesterday and was told that the problem was the tiny "rocks" that a person has in the inner ear. Apparently, it's a very common problem and hopefully it will either right itself or will be helped by exercises.
Anyway, I didn't have to drive for the Count and there was not much walking - just around the various farms we called in at on our route. I don't know where all the farm cats were on this day, but I think the one in my photo plus another at the same farm were the only ones we saw. This beautiful cat was very active and, in the end, the only way I finally managed to get a photo was when Lorrie picked it up.
The Count started at 8:00 am and my small group (seven of us in two cars) started at Frank Lake. I think we finished somewhere around 4:00 pm, and then met up with everyone else who had different routes at the meeting place to hand in the lists of species seen. The Potluck supper was delicious! Thank you so much to the ladies of High River who had prepared this for us. Many thanks to Greg Wagner, too, for organizing yet another great Count. Thanks, Lorrie and John for driving the car I was in!
For me, the six Great Horned Owls (3 pairs) were the highlight of the day. The saddest thing we found was a dead Great Horned Owl that was in one of the huge Spruce trees in someone's yard. We couldn't tell the cause of death."

After 20 frames I was starting to lose the feeling in my fingers, at which point I figured it was a good time to stop. So, unless it repeats its 1892 behaviour and undergoes a second outburst sometime in January, this will probably be the last image I'll post of Comet Holmes.
Two naked-eye comets, a total lunar eclipse, and a daylight lunar occultation of Venus: 2007 has been a pretty good year for astronomy!

Sweet gums (Liquidambar) have splendid fall leaf colors. This leaf (and the ones behind it) were on a small tree within easy walking distance of our home. Straight out of the camera, except for a crop.

December 9 - What's In Your Mailbox
After work and taking pictures for a play opening this Friday, I had almost forgotten about the challenge today. When I signed on I instantly knew what today's prompt was.
My daughter had already brought the mail inside, but I had a helper bring it back out to the mailbox to recreate the scene.
Every five minutes Joey is showing me something new he's done to his homemade Skopio. They aren't available retail anymore and he really wanted one. He took apart the Witch Doctor and other Bionicle and Technic pieces to make his own this weekend. He wants me to mention that it has one eye on purpose.

This is my photo for the 52 in 2020 Challenge - #52 - Anything taken on December 1st. I almost forgot this challenge, so I grabbed this little statue I have of my favourite African animal - the Zebra and raced outside with my camera. The light was disappearing and it was still raining lightly after a big storm.
