I am excited to finally get around to sharing my photos from last winter with you all! It has sure taken me long enough, but I think it's a nice batch of photos. I really love how the sparse barren landscape in winter allows you to imprint your own vision on the landscape. The photos don't come easy in winter, but if you are willing to work for them the rewards can be exceptional.
When I see this photo here, I think of cold feet. Really cold feet. I was thrilled when I found this scene, but I needed to balance on some fallen trees to navigate my way through the marsh to my desired composition and then I slid my feet and my tripod carefully onto the ice slowly testing its strength. Once I was stable, I got lost in the ice bubbles and after a long time photographing (maybe an hour) I realized my feet were very, very cold, so I returned to the shore.
These bubbles are methane gas from decomposing bacteria at the bottom of the pond. The gas gets trapped as the water freezes, which can create intriguing patterns. In the Canadian Rockies, Abraham Lake is iconic for these methane bubbles and many photographers have taken beautiful photographs with bubbles in the foreground and jagged mountain peaks in the background. You won't find jagged mountain peaks in the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough State Forest in Massachusetts, but if you look hard enough you can find methane bubbles. It's always rewarding to find that these naturally beautiful scenes exist so close to home for those who are willing to look for them.
I played with a lot of different compositions at this scene, but my immediate instinct was that I was looking at the shape of a seahorse and that is the vision that stuck with me. Seahorses always remind me of my college roommate Jon, who loved Jim Gaffigan and his bit about the male seahorse carrying the babies.

Christmas in Seligenstadt - The town where i was born and grown up. We have a very ancient Church there: The Einhard Basilika build in the year 800...Its wonderful inside!
