The North East had a touch of snow during the Christmas/New Year break. Visiting some of my wives relations in Shildon enabled a visit to Locomotion, the National Railway Museum annex. Standing outside is the basic main parts of class J21 0-6-0 65033. On closer inspection virtually all of the detailed parts of this engine are missing and I assume they are in store somewhere. Although the engine has moved in the yard from where it was on my last visit almost two years ago it does not seem to have progressed in that period, 30th December 2017.

Locomotive History

65033 is the last survivor of a class of two hundred and one locomotives built by the North Eastern Railway between 1886 and 1894. 65033 was built at Gateshead works as a three cylinder compound engine and entered traffic as 876 in 1889. It was converted to a two cylinder simple engine in December 1908. It has proved to be a lucky engine as it was withdrawn in November 1939, however the needs of the Second World War lead to a reprieve and it was repaired and reinstated to traffic. It was renumbered 5033 in 1946 and 65033 in 1948. Class withdrawals had commenced in 1929 and by 1962 65033 was the last still in traffic. In April 1962 it was withdrawn and along with fellow J21 65099 it was dumped at Darlington Works for the next four years whilst a decision on preservation was considered as part of the National Collection. This did not happen and 65099 was broken up in 1966 but 65033 managed to linger on, avoiding the scrap yard, being stored at Tanfield and Consett until eventually it was preserved in 1972 at the Beamish Museum. It was used from 1975, pulling the restored NER Coach and the restored NER wagons between the Colliery Sidings and Station. In December 1983 it was declared unfit to run due to the Boiler certificate running out and it then languished in the station yard until 2004 when it was removed to the North Norfolk Railway for restoration. This did not happen however and it moved to Shildon in May 2010.

So, this is what I ended up with after Dec and Jan. Not too shabby... This pile includes my pre-Christmas shopping spree for some rare stuff, like that (very) unofficial set in the middle - designed, presumably by a LEGO fan, for the Norwegian Guide and Scout Association (they're currently sold out, but they say they'll get new stock in in February. Unless, I assume, LEGO comes down hard on them for using their logo on an unofficial product, without the disclaimer about "not endorsed by...").

It also contains my first LEGO Christmas present for more than 20 years, the Seattle Space Needle set given to me by a mate. I already have it, of course, so I'll be trading it for something else, but it's the thought that counts :)

And let me add, just for the record, that after having built the Parisian Restaurant, I now have a new favourite among the modular buildings. It's stunning - especially the interior.

Catching water. Inspired by Lintmachine and Lee. Not exactly what I wanted, but close enough for this iteration.

Updated with some brightening of the background, and decided not to go B&W (needs bigger contrast to work well).

perfect start, perfect 3 days, perfect news. Thank you December
