Actually bought this dress for a date that didn’t happen, but the fun of looking for an outfit to impress was a thrill…

NOTE: Watched this Cooper's capture and devour a Mourning Dove in my yard. This feast went on for about 45 minutes. I had to take this photo through my basement window.

A photo of Elizabeth "Betty" Mulvihill and her handsome date, taken by an unknown photographer at a UCLA sorority dance, circa 1950.
Many will recognize a younger James Dean than we typically see in pictures and movies. He is nineteen or twenty here, in the year before he traveled to New York and studied in The Actor's Studio under Lee Strasberg.
Provenance of this photo is uncertain. Family members believed the negative was stored in the floor safe in Betty's Costa Mesa home, but it has never been found there or elsewhere. I don't believe she was ever in possession of the negative, but rather a silver print, as it was the practice of photographers in those days to sell prints and retain the negatives and rights to their images. This photographer would have had no knowledge of James' future fame or the potential value of this image. The negative was probably filed away and later discarded.
The silver print has, likewise, never been found. What you see here is a scan of a low quality 11X14 enlargement that hangs in our dining room. I've made minimal adjustments for tonal scale.
James was studying theater at UCLA, and first met Betty's mother and aunt at their hair salon in nearby Beverly Hills. As the story is told, he also received math tutoring from Betty's aunt in the Beverly Hills home she shared with Betty's mother.(these were remarkably successful and independent women).
Betty was young, smart, beautiful and--best of all--only 5'-2" tall. They made a stunning couple, and saw one another often until James departed for New York.
Sadly, this is where their story ended.
