AMY BAILEY (1895 – 1990)

Amy Bailey as born in Walderston, Manchester on November 27, 1895. She attended the Mount Olivet Elementary School and then the Shortwood Teacher’s College in 1915, graduating in 1917. She began her teaching career at the Kingston Technical High School in 1919 and continued there until her retirement until 1958.
Like many if her peers, Miss bailey wholeheartedly embraced politics and deeply involved herself in socio-economic issues and debates of the time. She was a forceful organizer and public speaker and found herself at the centre of many public meetings. As well, she gave voluntary service to numerous underprivileged girls through the founding of the Housecraft Training centre in January of 1946. She used this Centre to train young women in self-respect and self-reliance. She was also the co-founder and the first Chairman of the Woman’s Liberal Club whose mandate included the determination to establish and defend the rights of women both outside and inside of the home. While in Englan, raising funds for the Save the Children Fund, she was advised that one of the major problems facing Jamaican young women was the high birth rate. As a result, herself, Dr. Hyacinth Lightbourne, Mae Farquharson, and other founded the first birth control league. A strong believer in the Garvey philosophy, Miss Bailey believed firmly in the innate dignity of the individual and fought against racial discrimination and the marginalization of women. Always an active woman, she served in several organizations:

A- According to Wikipedia, dates grow well in the low California desert. Westmorland (population 2225) is 164 feet BELOW sea level; that's pretty low. This old waterworks building is a haven for local grafitti artists. I did not expect them to be so very unthug like. I mean not like I would know, but...This girl was patiently waiting with her Wawa coffee whilst the boyfriend made his mark. I did not talk to them, but through signals and nods got her approval to shoot them.

This is a figure of St. George in limewood, and carved from one piece of wood. It originally formed part of the central panel of an altarpiece. St George was a saint from the East, but as the result of the crusades he became popular throughout Europe. Having rescued a princess by slaying a dragon, he personified the ideals of chivalry and was often depicted with the tamed or dead beast beside him.
St. George stands on an irregular base wearing elaborate armour. His raised right hand holds a tournament lance and his left hand is clasped around the turned neck of the dragon. It would have been fully painted, but has subsequently been stripped of its colouring with the exception of flesh tone in the face, traces of black colour indicating the pupils, red traces in the mouth, ear, and the wound of the dragon, and green pigments on the base. The head of the lance is missing and the index finger of the right hand is a later replacement. The back of the body has been hollowed out and the reverse of the base is flat.

The original Rolex 14k yellow gold shell case with stainless steel back is in excellent condition with no dents or personalization. It has been well cared for by the original owner. The diameter is a full 34mm; not counting the original Rolex signed screw-down crown. The original Rolex crystal is brand new.
