Remark: The image here shows the third court house constructed in Porter County. This structure was completed in 1883 at a cost of $157,348, nearly 25 percent over the original bid cost of $125,909. The building's footprint measured 128 feet by 98 feet, and had a tower height of 168 feet. A fire at the court house occurred during near zero temperatures on December 27, 1934, and required the assistance of fire departments from Gary and LaPorte to help extinguish the blaze. Tragically, fireman Raymond Meinke died of injuries sustained when his fire truck skidded on an icy highway six miles from Valparaiso on its return trip to LaPorte from this fire. Considerable controversy resulted from this fire; several residents had stated that the county had been warned repeatedly about building safety issues, especially about alleged faulty wiring, long before the fire took place and that these warnings were continually ignored by the county commissioners. William Hutton, an architect from Hammond, Indiana, assisted the county in receiving $100,000 from insurance companies after the fire. In 1936, William Scholer, an architect from Lafayette, Indiana, was hired by the county to prepare two separate plans: one plan for the complete demolition and construction of a new court house, and the second plan for the remodeling of the fire-damaged structure. In the end, remodeling the damaged structure won out. The cost for reconstructing the fire-damaged structure was $172,000, which was completed in 1937 by the the local firm Foster Lumber Company.

This was the second of the lakes; at the Narrows Interchange. This bird was on the banks very near a bus-stop on a busy road across from the hospital. This shot had no need to be cropped. I was really close and he never flew off. Even with the lens at its shortest and zooming out with my feet I couldn't get the whole bird in the frame.
'I saw you,
Concrete filled background,
In a blond wig and a tutu attachment,
You stood and stared, at the zebra crossing laid bare,
I made the mistake.
I saw you,
Reflection glistened, sunglasses hidden,
Making the decision of which street to christen,
I re-created you in my mind.
Infatuation.'

The first historical records on Aalst date from the 9th century, when it was described as the villa Alost, a dependency of the Abbey of Lobbes. During the Middle Ages, a town and port grew at this strategic point, where the road from Bruges to Cologne crossed the Dender. While it was within the Holy Roman Empire it was considered the capital of the province of Flanders. In 1046, Aalst was transferred to the Countship of Imperial Flanders, and absorbed a portion of Brabant, and in 1173 it was united with the remainder of the Flanders province. Its frontier position on the border of the Holy Roman Empire allowed the town to keep a certain degree of independence. Its relation with Brabant has been preserved in the city's white and red coat of arms, the colours of Lotharingia.
Construction of the town hall began in the middle of the 12th century, making it the oldest surviving town hall in Belgium. Several manuscripts from this period still survive in the town archives. During the Hundred Years War the town of Aalst allied themselves with Louis de Male against Philip van Artevelde and sent troops in the victorious Battle of Roosebeke. The town hall, and the city itself, were almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1360. The town was soon rebuilt and a new belfry in gothic style was built in the 15th century. This was a time of great prosperity for the city, dominated by the powerful weavers' guild. It is also at that time that Dirk Martens, a local citizen, became the Southern Netherlands’ first printer, founding a printing shop in 1473 that published books by various authors including Christopher Columbus; Martens would later become a professor at the Old University of Leuven, and he was laid to rest in the Saint Martin's Church (Aalst) [nl].
Aalst suffered considerably under the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648). It was later taken by the French Marshal Turenne in the War of Devolution of 1667, then occupied by France until 1706, when it became independent once more following the Battle of Ramillies, along with Southern Flanders in general. The textile-based economy flourished under the French. In the 18th century, the Austrians controlled the region. 1830 saw Belgium gain independence and Aalst became part of the country, this ended a long period, starting in 1056, of foreign control, by such as the Spanish, German, French, and the Dutch. The 19th century was marked by social crises engendered by the Industrial Revolution, with Father Adolf Daens and his Christene Volkspartij emerging as the local defender of workers' rights. This was in response to Rerum novarum, which established worker rights. However Daens felt this did not do enough. Eventually, he was made to pay for his "splinter movement".[how?] In the Pre-World War II years, the fascist movement in the Low Countries gained momentum, with the collaborationist Vlaamsch Nationaal Verbond (Flemish National Union) putting down roots in the region. Aalst, along with Brussels and Antwerp were the strongest subscribers to this line of thought. The 20th century was marked by bombardment and occupation by the Germans during both world wars.
Shuishang Gongyuan (水上公园), or Tianjin Water Park, is easily my favorite city park in Tianjin and – to date – in China. Granted, I haven’t been to nearly enough places in China to make a more comprehensive statement, but of the parks I’ve been to in Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, and Guangzhou, this is easily my favorite.
It’s the largest urban park in the city at a little over 300 acres of space. The park was officially opened in its current state by the communist government in 1951. Previously, it had been known as Green Dragon Pond and has a history that dates back to the first century AD. “With the establishment of Beiyang University and Nankai University at the turn of the 20th century, the waterways of the park became popular for swimming among academic staff and students during the hot summer months.” (Summation via Wikipedia entry.)
The park is quite pleasant year-round. In summer, the lotus pond is bursting with flowers and the photographers who love to shoot them. In spring and fall, various flowers bloom (chrysanthemums in fall, peonies in spring). Winter brings a freezing of the lakes – and there are three: East Lake, West Lake, and South Lake – whereas summer brings a rash of personal boaters.
In addition to leisurely strolling around the grounds with the various pavilions, verandas, and pagodas, the Tianjin Zoo (separate admission) is also on the grounds of the park. Also, there is an amusement park in the northeast corner of the park. Amusement parks are pretty common fare among China’s city parks, which make them slightly different than American city parks.
Shuishang Gongyuan is quite easy to locate. It is nearest the Tianta subway station on line 3 of the Tianjin Metro, about a 5-10 minute walk from any of the exits (though exits C & D are technically the closest). The Tianta TV Tower (whence comes the name of the subway station) is also nearby and quite prominently visible from many places in the park. I’ve yet to venture to the top of the tower, but it would provide an excellent viewing platform for a panoramic view of the park, weather permitting.
Acro Yoga at the Date Night-Partner Yoga class which is offered once a month at Bliss Yoga. This playful airplane pose brings out the child in all of us. It builds strength (the base must use the core muscles and legs for flying); it increases confidence and strengthens the relationship between the practicing yogis. It is fun and always encouraging, no matter what pose.

Stone carved detail carved into the former offices of the Bristol Mirror in the heart of teh old city.
Assyrian reliefs
Mostly dating from the period 880-612 BC, these carved scenes are found on free-standing stelae and as panels cut on cliffs and rocks at distant places reached by the Assyrian kings during their campaigns. The most spectacular use of stone reliefs, however, was as panels which decorated the mud-brick walls in palaces and temples up to a height of 2.6 metres.
The scenes were originally picked out with paint, which occasionally survives, and work like modern comic books, starting the story at one end and following it along the walls to the conclusion.
The Assyrians used a form of gypsum for the reliefs and carved it using iron and copper tools. The stone is easily eroded when exposed to wind and rain and when it was used outside, the reliefs are presumed to have been protected by varnish or paint. It is possible that this form of decoration was adopted by Assyrian kings following their campaigns to the west, where stone reliefs were used in Neo-Hittite cities like Carchemish. The Assyrian reliefs were part of a wider decorative scheme which also included wall paintings and glazed bricks.
The reliefs were first used extensively by king Ashurnasirpal II (about 883-859 BC) at Kalhu (Nimrud). This tradition was maintained in the royal buildings in the later capital cities of Khorsabad and Nineveh.

Dating back to around 1367 this is a great place to explore. Here in November 1440 the two young Douglas brothers were the guests beheaded after, “The Black Dinner.” William Douglas, 6th Earl of Douglas, his brother David and Sir Malcolm Fleming of Cumbernauld were invited to dine with the ten year-old King James II of Scotland. The dinner was organised by Sir Alexander Livingston and Sir William Crichton. This became known as the Black Dinner as a black bull's head was brought in after the feasting and set before the Douglas' party as a symbol of death. Douglas his brother and their friend were given a mock trial and beheaded. The earl and his brother were executed on 24 November, 1440, and Sir Malcolm Fleming four days later.
The Black Dinner is said to have given rise to this rhyme,
Edinburgh castle, town and tower,
God grant you sink for sin;
And that even for the black dinner
Earl Douglas got therein.
