Hindu and Buddhist Art From India

The Himalayas and Southeast Asia

Many of these Hindu, Buddhist or Jain images were once installed in temple or household shrines as objects of daily devotion and meditation. They convey the serenity, compassion and supreme power or insight of deities and enlightened beings. Images like these remain in worship today throughout India, as well as in the Himalayan region and Southeast Asia, whose cultures were transformed by the spread of Buddhism and Hinduism.

From AD 600 the form of the temple was developing, within India and Beyond into a symbolic microcosm of the universe. Towers and outer walls teem with carved imagery of gods, men, animals and plants. Distinctive regional styles of sculpture soon developed throughout the subcontinent. As in earlier times, professional sculptors often worked for patrons of different faiths, so that Hindu, Buddhist or Jain images may share a similar regional style.

This assignment has really opened my eyes to what's really important in my life. Having to take only 5 pictures that show myself and my world was difficult yet very inspiring. These 5 pictures are some of the few reasons why I am who I am.

1. Basketball is my escape from reality. Playing ball has taught me a lot over the past 10 years, and despite my injuries, basketball has been there for me when no one else was. Taking this picture was a bit challenging. I had to use a self timer on my camera, it took a while to get the perfect shot but my basketball pictures turned out decent.

2. My little brother and I are seven years apart, and regardless of the age gap, he's probably one of the greatest people I know. I've made a lot of mistakes growing up, and he's seen me fail and succeed. I am more than proud of the person my little brother is becoming. He's learning from the mistakes i've made and is growing up to be a responsible, hard working teenager. The determination he has to succeed is admirable and the bond we share is definitely a blessing from God. Our relationship may not be perfect, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

3. I had a lot of family problems growing up, which led me to growing up bitter and unhappy. As I grew older I realized that the longer I hold onto things that upset me, the more bitter and unhappy I will be. Letting go of everything that hurt me in the past was probably one of the best and life changing decisions i've made. Letting go made me realize that my parents are my biggest blessings and they are the two most hard working, selfless people I know. If they could, they would give my brother and I the world just to see the smile on our faces. My parents are one of the main reasons why I work hard and want to succeed in life. My goal is to make them proud and repay them for everything they've sacrificed to make my brother and I happy.

4. Welcome to H&M at Great Mall. This is my actual first real job that I enjoy & hate. This picture also doesn't do the store justice because that's not even half of the mess that goes on at H&M. Because of H&M I can pay my bills, rent, gas, groceries, food, and shopping. I enjoy making my own money but I hate picking up and cleaning up after people, but hey, that's retail!

5. Last but not least, my daily devotion. There's not a day where I don't thank God for the amazing life he's blessed me with. My life is no where near perfect, but the flaws and downfalls are what make my life worth living. I gain my strength through God and he's my guide to every good and bad situation in my life.

This assignment has really opened my eyes to what's important in my life.

Daily Devotion is something we shouldn't miss out or skip from our lives 'cos it is our "spiritual food".

Our Spirit is same likes our body. They need some foods to get strong and healthy. If we don't eat properly, it will effect our body... weak & easy to get tired... it's not good for our health. That's why we need to eat... but it isn't just "eating"... we need to watch "WHAT DO WE EAT?"... junk food or healthy food...

We really need to do our "Daily Devotion" 'cos through it we will know "ALL GOD's promises for us"... When we know what did GOD prepare for you then you will have a good VISION.

This is our Daily devotional for the year. I was fortunate to have seen Angus Buchan preach at our local church last year. A farmer by profession he is filling up rugby stadiums for Jesus and had a 20 000 men strong camp on his farm last year. His life story is also told in the movie "Faith like potatoes".
