Every parent wants their children to be able to express themselves. One of the best ways to encourage their expression is by motivating them to indulge in crafts and other self-expressive activities. Here are some easy DIY craft ideas for your kids to enjoy:

I made my fiance a case for his iPad from this $1 thrifted wool blazer and a leather scrap. I even used the lining from the jacket for the interior--the only part that's new is the velcro.

The iPad needed a sleeve to protect it from our cats after one of them started trying to bite the edges and overturn it to get the creatures underneath that were taunting her. Oops :-P

Cheapie $15 IKEA table, wood burner, wood-stain pens from Loews. This was a sweet present. I made it in 2002, I think.

108 hand-painted cork tiles, featuring colors from my favorite palette: Whatever Is In The Drawer. This is night time incandescents, so the colors are actually less yellow/saturated in reality (red, orange, lavender, dark teal, moss green).

Pretty chiffon ribbon rosettes, LOVE IT ?

Fridge magnets I made using MS Paint (!!!) and inkjet magnet sheets, probably in 2003 or so.

Step 3: attach an old chain to replace the arms. one side i was able to hook it into where the screw was, however the other side was broken off, so i just hot glued them together.

Step 4: if you want, add charms to the bottom of the chain. if the chain you use is light, you will have to do this in order to keep them on.

A deodorant is a pretty sturdy thing, and I am thinking about using it for something crafty and clever. But what?

sooo my new job requires me to have a lot of keys (my collection will grow and grow!) and i didn't want to stash them all in a drawer. i was just going to get some wood and decoupage or stamp it, but when ry & i went to ikea for hooks we saw this frame and knew it was too perfect! he screwed the hooks in for me in about ten minutes, and it really is useful & lovely.

Here's the final placement. Notice that there's an orange feather shape over the top left edge, the top right edge and corner, and the lower left edge and corner. These will be the shapes you cut. First, trace around your template, and cut your paper down to the size of your frame insert (already done that in this picture). For this, you can either cut your clear template down to the size of your art (but then you have to eyeball placement when you lay it back down) or you can place your art between the template and paper to line it up, then remove the template and (carefully!) mark the shapes right at the edge of the art, with a pencil. With a pencil, carefully mark where each of those shapes meet the edge of your art. For each shape, mark where the shape crosses into the art and where it crosses back out. These are the two points between which you will cut.
