Hong Kong is known as the Halloween party capital of Asia.

Halloween in Hong Kong has two traditions. The first involves the event called “Yue Lan” (Festival of the Hungry Ghosts). Its emphasis is less on celebration, rather it is an opportunity to give gifts to spirits of the dead to provide comfort and ward them off.

The second and more commercialized event is celebrated by expatriate Americans or Canadians. Hong Kong Disneyland hosts the annual Halloween Bash. Bars in Lan Kwai Fong famously throws Halloween parties every year.

While trick or treating is not as commonly celebrated in Hong Kong, there are events at Tsim Sha Tsui’s Avenue of the Stars that try to mimic the celebration.

Save the tree trunk... have a "Green" outdoor table...

One of my favourite decorating ideas for a wedding are beautiful banners and bunting. Here are a few simple ideas I collected for my wedding... blog.idoityourself.com.au/

DIY Halloween Decorations: Tombstones created by my wife and I.

These are 23W (100W equivalent) soft white CFLs with a 2700K color temperature.

Soft whites are easy to get; I can always swap in "cooler" colored bulbs (4000-6500K) for a more daylight effect later.

Letting you see the old and the new come together. love the process of it all. (btw...sorry I think my lense was fogging up in the heat.) Oh, the anticipation of it all!

The pegboard is not new, but the magnet on the shelf support is, which we installed just today. We separated out some of the tools that did not hang on the pegboard very well.

This is the same 18" strong magnet we used for the kitchen.

I painted a chipboard bird to look like a European robin, one of the first birds of spring. It has a forsythia blossom in its beak. Here it is in the cage.

I think I might create a "seasonal bird of the month" with the other chipboard birds and cages I have.

Hooting Halloween owls

Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Line a 12-cup muffin tin with brown muffin cases. Beat the first 5 ingredients to a smooth batter and spoon between the cases, almost filling them to the top. You may have a little left over. Bake for 20-25 mins until risen and spongy. Cool on a rack.

Beat the butter and icing sugar until smooth. Slice off the very tops of the cakes and cut each piece in half. Spread a generous layer of icing over each cake.

Working on one cake at a time, squirt a pea-sized blob of orange icing onto two Maltesers and use to fix a brown M&M on each. Sit the eyes, two pieces of cake top (curved edge up) and a jelly diamond on the icing to make an owl.

Tile layed out for the completion of this table...which is huge & will have 8 chairs (but could seat a max of 12). This project might be the hardest...never placed tile before.

I painted a chipboard bird to look like a European robin, one of the first birds of spring. Here's a close-up detail of the different shades of brown on the tail.

Soft whites are easy to get; I can always swap in "cooler" colored bulbs (4000-6500K) for a more daylight effect later. What is important here is that this bulbs emit 1600 lumens each for a total of 16,000, which is well above the 10,000 lumens needed for SAD therapy.
