5 July – A Doll A Day 2019
Janie: "If we get this part sealed up properly, we shouldn't have any more leaks."
Triv: "Which means we shouldn't have any more wet, rotten floors, right?"
Janie: "Exactly! And we will never, ever have to do this stupid project again!"
Triv: "You said this project. Like, this particular project."
Janie: "Well... if you insist on being all precise and stuff... yeah."
Triv: "... sigh ..."
I saw this idea online and knew it would be the perfect solution for a tricky wall in my house.
This is a outside wall on a double brick, century home and it is without insulation and impossible to use nails/screws on. I wanted the wall to be fun, colourful and I also wanted something to give the feel of warming the wall up.
I had to use a solution that would "stick" to the walls, instead of putting in permanent special screws that would be damaging long term.
Initially I tried double sided tape but no luck. Believe it or not these are all hot glued to the wall. I tested them and I can easily pull them off and peel the glue off without damaging my fresh paint but, they hang on the wall without falling.
The hoops I bought brand new at the thrift store in this massive garbage back. i literally own probably 100 hoops outside of the ones on the wall. The bag was $20. All the fabric is scraps I had, or some fat squares I bought/traded for from various Etsy shops.
I'm debating extending this up the entire staircase, but I have a window at the bend in the starcase and I can't decide if I want to do something different there.
Some DIY projects just need to be put down!
The camera microphone does not do justice to the sound. My ears were ringing for half an hour. I forgot to plug 'em with cotton or tissue.
The first shot went through the base of the lantern logo. The second hits just to the right of the "2" and partly splits the plank.
"What is it?"
"Or perhaps the question should be: who is it?"
Oh, the things one finds during a demolition project!

"This bolt... seems... kinda... tight!"
Triv and Janie undertake a "simple repair" on a leaking outdoor water spigot.
There's absolutely nothing ominous about the circling vulture overhead, right?
...instead of framing another matching wallpaper sample, the place patiently awaiting to be filled, is now inhabited by a round wooden bowl.
I love the fact that its three dimensional, participating in an otherwise two dimensional "construction" and that there is theme, as much as chromatic relevance, as the two samples are picturing tree barks.
P.S: you can read more about the making of these frames here:

MAKE YOUR OWN TERRARIUM:
Over the weekend during our outing at Terrain I was searching for something to pick up as a little memento. While I loved everything there I didn’t need anything so, I had pretty much decided that I would just be leaving with my memories. My sweet husband had other plans. He found an orange plant that reminded him of me and off he went picking up plants to make me a little terrarium at home. Isn’t that just the sweetest!

"Unlike many of our projects where, in authentic DIY TV fashion we 'hype up' the level of difficulty or danger, this project offers a very real possibility of serious injury or death. On the bright side, it's a relatively simple project, and offers very little chance of minor injury. But major injury... or death? Yeah, that could happen.
Because, y'see, before you remove this cover to pull out the old circuit breaker switches -- that's what we're doing today, replacing a couple of faulty circuit breaker switches -- particularly if they are old and damaged, it's a good idea to turn off the MAIN POWER BREAKER servicing the breaker box. In fact, there's even a label on the box, there, that says TURN OFF POWER SUPPLYING THIS EQUIPMENT BEFORE WORKING INSIDE. They have to say that -- liability concerns and stuff.
Problem is, some old houses, like this one, DO NOT HAVE a main power breaker switch to turn off. Turning off the power to the breaker box requires either asking the power company for a temporary disconnect, or calling an electrician to physically disconnect the power feed. Either approach is time-consuming and expensive.
Like... expensive.
So rather than shell out hundreds of bucks by calling 'a professional' for a ten minute job replacing a twenty dollar part, we're gonna go with the Potential Major Injury or Death option.
If you're seeing this post, things probably worked out all right.
If you're not seeing this post, you probably won't be seeing any further posts from us."

So I bought this t-shirt at the AGO during the Jean-Michel Basquiat art show. I got the t-shirt on sale and it started out as white.
I dyed it - unfortunately it shrank so I removed the sleeves and then opened it up and added the narrow side panels. I put the overlay of lace on the sleeves - lace courtesy of my friend Jason who gave me some vintage fabric for Christmas. I then got out the fabric paint/markers and decided to do an eclectic mix of images in my own style as a tribute to Basquiat's fabulous artistic work.
It took a long time but I'm pretty happy with the results. Thanks to Michael for helping me document it! :)

"Are we done now?"
"Nope. We still need to stain the wood. Which we can't do until the weather gets warmer and dry."
"But the weather forecast says rain, snow, and cold for the coming week."
"Uh huh. The weather's prolly gonna ruin everything we've just done."
Everything sucks. Just... everything.

Doll house room box, work in progress... or lack of progress. I think I started this project three years ago. May have been even longer. It's been sitting in the storage shed for ages, and has gradually filled up with junk. Solo in the Spotlight Barbie gives the place a quick once-over and declares: Burn it!

It's a good thing Janie likes doing stuff like this. Of course, it's easier for her than it is for me. She can access the space under the sink much more easily than can I.
And yes, both Janie and I know that "flexible" sink fittings are a bad idea. That's what was there, so that's what we're putting in for now. We'll be back in the fall to install a decent drain pipe system.

Inspired by "Coastal Living" magazine, I started this beach inspired wreath for our "cosmic pink" front door. Its made out of things I've picked up on my beach walks, as well as some other items I've purchased along the way - driftwood, seashells, coral, beach glass, and oyster shells. I'm totally out of driftwood so I guess its back to the beach for me!!
Framing, framing, and more framing. But... this step is nearly finished, and it's turning out flat! And level!
(When you're talkin' floors, flat and level are important!)
We're pretty much gonna be sticking with Smart Doll carpentry photos until this project is finished... which may be a while.
