"Logan" Allen - the former big kahuna photo director for some of the big cosplay photoshoots at Dragon*CON - is now "retired" from doing the shoots. However, he made a guest appearance at the big Marvel shoot (2015) on Sunday.

Was sorely tempted to swipe some of his Marvel Legends figures (those Enchantress and Rocket Raccoon figs - WANT!) but I'm too nice of a fanboy... sometimes... dammit... ;-P

Musical Director of "Cantatrice Voices" which is based in Horsham and Steyning, Zoe Peate arranges, guides, teaches and trains a large womens choir of over 100 voices to competition standard performances.

Often presenting a varied repertoire of songs involving some very challenging arrangements performed at venues as diverse as concert halls and theatres to full on shows in small local venues. Her "Ladies" are devoted to her and to the choir, giving of their best and better at every performance I have photographed over the past few years, which is more than a few.

Thomas Lumpkin (left), CIMMYT Director General, chats with S. Ayyappan, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) of the Ministry of Agriculture of India and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), at the official launch of the Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA), held in New Delhi, India on 5 October 2011.

BISA will be a new, state-of-the-art, international agricultural research and development center, based in India and managed by CIMMYT. It will boost agricultural productivity by adapting wheat and maize varieties able to thrive despite the challenges of climate change, natural resource scarcity, diverse ecosystems, and increasing market demand. It will deliver elite wheat and maize germplasm that is high-yielding and robust—able to withstand drought, heat, diseases—and meets requirements for diversified cropping rotations and grain quality, and make it accessible to small seed companies so that they can offer quality, affordable seed to smallholder farmers. It will provide support in the use of modern biotechnology and bioinformatics tools and supply effective and profitable technologies and crop varieties for conservation and precision agriculture. BISA will have centers in three states, Punjab, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh, each of which contains varied agro-ecological zones allowing for testing of a variety of maize and wheat cultivars suited to the equally varied environments of South Asia.

Ayyappan opened the launch ceremony with a welcome address that was followed by speeches from Ramkrishna Kusmaria, Agriculture Minister of Madhya Pradesh, S. Sucha Singh Langah, Agriculture Minister of Punjab, and Sharad Pawar, the Union Minister for Agriculture and Food Processing Industries of India. Lumpkin delivered the closing remarks, saying “CIMMYT has been in India for 50 years. It’s time we laid down some roots.”

In addition to CIMMYT-India staff, the CIMMYT management committee, and its Board of Trustees, the ceremony was attended by representatives from CIMMYT’s sister institutions ILRI, IRRI, and Bioversity, as well as from the Allan Mustard Institute of the US Department of Agriculture and the private sector. The event was closed by a dinner and a speech by the Board of Trustees Chair, Sara Boettiger.

Thomas Lumpkin, CIMMYT Director General, addresses the audience as he closes the official launch of the Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA), held in New Delhi, India on 5 October 2011. He reminded the audience of the challenges of global food security as well as the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa. He also highlighted the support of the Mexican government and CIMMYT’s role in facilitating and promoting cooperation through its centers in India, Mexico, and Africa. He concluded his speech stating that “CIMMYT has been in India for 50 years. It’s time we laid down some roots.”

Pictured: UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous meets with Ukrainian refugee women, children and the elderly at a temporary placement centre in Costesti, 20 km from capital Chisinau, Moldova.

The Executive Director visited the Republic of Moldova from 8 to 10 April 2022 to reaffirm UN Women’s commitment as a key partner to advance gender equality and women’s leadership in the country. During her visit, Bahous emphasized UN Women’s determination to support Moldova’s efforts as a host country to the thousands of refugees fleeing the war in neighbouring Ukraine.

In cooperation with local authorities and civil society organisations, UN Women supports 2000 refugee women and their children in temporary placement centres in Moldova by providing most essential needs. In coordination with the border police, UN Women provided wheelchairs and walkers to assist elderly people and women with small babies at the border crossings. Meanwhile, through the Women, Peace and Humanitarian Fund, UN Women is financially supporting civil society organisations to raise awareness about sexual and gender-based violence and respond to the most urgent needs of women and children.

UN Women is working with partners to ensure that there is up-to-date data on and analysis of the gender dynamics of the refugee crisis which is critical for supporting humanitarian actors in ensuring a gender-responsive refugee response. UN Women and IOM issued a survey which offers important data and analysis on refugee needs, intentions and displacement patterns.
