US 42 is the old highway through the northern Kentucky suburbs of Cincinnati. It's an annoying road I kind of hate, but it does have this interesting dip beneath a railroad track. The dip is very sharp, and even through it's a US highway, it's not something a semi-truck wants to try. I imagine this must flood in a hard rain.
What people describe as "Northern Kentucky" is composed of that little knob at the very top of the state, right across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio. For some reason, it's divided into three counties and about a half-million little towns, but really, it's just all the same town, and all the different names exist solely to give Robin's parents something to argue about when they debate The History of Where Things Happened. I believe that in the technical sense, this specific location is in the Kenton County city of Erlanger. This is the specific suburb where Robin's parents lived when Robin was very young.
Other than that stint Robin's dad did in Vietnam in the late 1960s, Robin's parents have lived in or immediately next to the northern Kentucky suburbs of Cincinnati their entire lives. Robin's dad's people were mostly Italian immigrants who came through Ellis Island in the 1910s and followed the flow of immigrants down the Ohio River to Cincinnati. But for some reason, Robin's grandfather landed on the south side of the river and wound up marrying a German woman.
Robin's mom's people were mostly Germans from the Rhine lands, around either Baden on the Rhine's east bank, or Alsace on the west. (Alsace is French now, but it traded back and forth a lot in the 19th century, and all Robin's Alsatians considered themselves German.) Her people came to America in two of the peak phases for Germans immigration into the US, first in the late 1840s, and then in the early 1870s. There were all kinds of historical things going on in Germany and France in these two eras to explain all the movement, but Robin's mom's people weren't the kind to write this stuff down, so nobody knows the specifics. They all wound up as part of the waves of German immigrants that washed down the Ohio River and landed in Cincinnati, but they, too, trickled to the south bank for reasons that will never be known, and their descendants stuck around until Robin moved to Chicago.
(There are still people from this line floating around northern Kentucky, though. Robin's got a cousin with a ton of kids a few suburbs over.)
