Toni had promised me that for my 55th birthday present we'd go down to Richmond for a Beer, Bourbon & Barbecue festival. Perfection, right? But then I learned she had the date wrong & the festival was really next weekend.
How can you recover from a snafu like that? If you're smart like Toni, you think Muslim. Toni headed down to the Lebanese Butcher and got me a goat instead. A whole goat -- complete with head, liver, and heart -- slaughtered in accordance with Halal dictates.
A day of pure carnivorous pleasure. 16 hours of pure smoky work, what with rubbing the goat with a fiery Jamaican curry paste, getting the fire ready (oak and hardwood charcoal), 10.5 hours of smoking, and an hour or two of pulling, cutting, and saucing (more Scotch Bonnet peppers).
As someone who as a kid used to take portable chess sets along on hunting trips so I wouldn't have to shoot (and clean) a squirrel or deer, I'm kind of proud of overcoming some of my squeamishness and hypocrisy. Although I couldn't finish making the "mannish water," a Jamaican goats head soup that supposedly serves as an organic Viagra, it was not because of squeamishness about the tongue hanging out or the eyes staring out at you, but just because I flat ran out of time before our neighbors arrived for the barbecue goat feast.
Today I leave you just a piece of this song:
Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion
Through the eons, and on and on
Oh yes we'll keep on tryin'
We'll tread that fine line
Oh we'll keep on tryin'
Till the end of time

Paco de Lucia's duende: www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEPFSU825dw
Duende is a difficult-to-define phrase used in the Spanish arts, including performing arts. From the original meaning (a fairy- or goblin-like creature in Spanish and Latin American mythology), the artistic and especially musical term was derived.
The meaning of duende as in tener duende (having duende) is a rarely-explained concept in Spanish art, particularly flamenco, having to do with emotion, expression and authenticity. In fact, tener duende can be loosely translated as having soul.
El duende is the spirit of evocation. It comes from inside as a physical/emotional response to music. It is what gives you chills, makes you smile or cry as a bodily reaction to an artistic performance that is particularly expressive. Folk music in general, especially flamenco, tends to embody an authenticity that comes from a people whose culture is enriched by diaspora and hardship; vox populi, the human condition of joys and sorrows. It is thus as universal in its meaning as it is immensely personal and culturally contextual by its nature.
Drawing on popular usage and Spanish folklore, Federico García Lorca first developed the aesthetics of Duende in a lecture he gave in Buenos Aires in 1933, "Juego y teoria del duende" ("Play and Theory of the Duende").
According to Christopher Maurer, editor of "In Search of Duende", at least four elements can be isolated in Lorca's vision of duende: irrationality, earthiness, a heightened awareness of death, and a dash of the diabolical. The duende is a demonic earth spirit who helps the artist to see the limitations of intelligence, reminding him that "ants could eat him or that a great arsenic lobster could fall suddenly on his head"; who brings the artist face-to-face with death, and who helps him create and communicate memorable, spine-chilling art. The duende is seen, in Lorca's lecture, as an alternative to style, to mere virtuosity, to God-given grace and charm (what Spaniards call "angel"), and to the classical, artistic norms dictated by the muse.

While I didn't find the moon in an ideal location relative to Mt. Rainier, the lighting of the moment dictated its placement. Shot later, the range of light would be too great to capture the scene in one shot.

This was one tough shot to pull together. The giant spotlight to the left dictated the location to keep it from shining on the lens and while the lights allowed for a low ISO, low noise shot of the land and buildings, they made the long-exposure shot of the sky really difficult to blend with the short exposure. Lots of hand work in Photoshop to blend.
That being said, it's fun to imagine getting a shot while scanning the internet for local compositions, and then to be able to actually pull it off.

The cloud formations in this shot remind me, a little bit anyway, of the aurora borealis. I have been lucky enough to see the aurora twice in my life here in Oklahoma ( very rare this far south). When I did see the northern lights the color in the sky was red, not the greens and yellows that I normally see in the shots posted here on flickr. I am not sure why that is, anyone out there know what dictates the color of the aurora??? Well, I am off to work... my busy season has begun. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!
If we all pull together, we can make a difference and we can bring about positive change. It is up to us, and time is running out! Do we have the will to join forces and make a better life for our children. We have to live and let live, not dictate! We need compassion, compromise, understanding, tolerance, diversity, teamwork and most of all love and friendship!

I decided to go looking for some Autumnal colour in Birnam wood at the weekend, the colour isn’t quite there yet – give it a week or two. I parked in the centre of town and made my way through the Beatrix Potter garden and then just followed my feet, in the general direction of Birnam Hill. Cold to the point of frosty when I set off, the rising sun and steady gradient soon generated enough heat to have me doffing my fleece.
Covering the hill, Birnam wood is crisscrossed with paths and tracks. I had no destination in mind and just let my feet find their way. Upon reaching a junction I made choices for photographic reasons; more colour, mist, light that way, or simply on a whim. I was, to use the Scots expression, in a bit of a dwam.
After an hour or so of wandering the path leveled off and I reached what I judged to be the top of the hill. It was hard to be certain; the trees grew thick and close to the path, showing no signs of its historic deforestation at the hands of King Malcolm’s army and affording no sight of landmarks.
The mist was thicker here and I pottered around taking pictures of the trees, the myriad of cobwebs (the condensation from the mist really makes them stand out) and the occasional fleeting glimpse of the sun through the mist. A couple walking a dog passed as I blundered around in the foliage a few feet from the path and asked if I was photographing the fairies. I was trying to manhandle my tripod into position at the time and had my camera strap in my mouth. I managed a “hummdphh mayhunghh” by way of reply which I am confident was correctly interpreted to mean “I am lining up to take a shot of some cobwebs, but I will certainly keep my eyes out for fairies”.
After a while I felt I had a few good shots in the bag and decided I would head back to the car. Abruptly I realized I had no clear idea how to get back to the car, I had wandered at random, taking crossings and turn offs at will and even diverting off into the undergrowth chasing shots and then stumbling out again onto a different path, but not really recording my route. Common sense would dictate that I head downhill but I might very well find myself on the wrong side of the hill facing an extended circuit around the bottom, or worse, retracing my steps and trying again.
Now, if this was a folk tale, it would be more or less at this moment that a faint point of blue light would appear, just at the furthest limit of sight in the mist. I would follow this, thanking the benevolence of the fairy folk and it would lead me safely home (or off a cliff)…….none of that happened, well not quite like that, I did follow a blue light to safety and civilization; the “your position” dot on Google Maps.

Life seems to sometimes take me for a ride and really the best I can do is try not to panic, remember that the answer is 42, and hold on while powers greater than myself dictate the future. I can't imagine that this place was planned, but to me this place became a work of art through thousands of years of monsoons, rain & wind storms. It's a barren an inhospitable place that becomes impassible when wet. On this trip I gained a new found respect for the mud in the southwest. In fact, an understanding, because the night before is when I got my jeep stuck in the mud 11 miles from the freeway as a thunder & lightning storm was rolling around on the horizon.
It was one of those moments where you're driving along on the dirt road and you see some mud and you think, oh there's a little water, but it should be fine. Well, in most cases, yes. In this particular place in the Southwest, you're going to get stuck.
I watched the sunset burn while I tried to frantically dig out praying that the looming thunderclouds didn't come my direction. As I night hiked out the lightning started illuminating the sky with bright flashes. If you've ever been out hiking alone in the dessert with lightning you fell like it's on top of you no matter how far away it is. The primal fear eventually subsided, and acceptance set in. I decided to sleep a few hours on this spot to capture this astronomical twilight scene. Alex Noriega was an inspiration here and deserves acknowledgement.
With limited visibility, visual flight rules dictate that the Osprey stay low enough to be able to see where it is going on Mud Lake.

It's a sure sign of success when they tell you you're doing it wrong, you're cheating, you can't do it that way. You've moved them, their minds in new ways and they can't handle it. They are afraid because they are comfortable where they are. They are afraid because they are unwilling to learn something new, to pick up new skills. They are stiff, old, in danger of becoming irrelevant.
This is the nature of Revolution. New ways of expression. New connections.

Britain did not grant its thirteen colonies in America representative membership in the British Parliament, yet it taxed and dictated to us without our consent. We have been free men. Did the British think colonialists were lesser men than they were because our thirteen colonies were small in stature and so far away from Britain? Britain's suggestion that the colonies had a token or "virtual representation" at Westminster was laughable. Nice try! We would not be a rich piggy bank for Britain to dip into whenever it wanted, without our vote of power and veto in parliament. Forget you! We built up, for some time, our own direct representative institutions, self-government, which Britain sometimes would dissolve when it didn’t like the results. It is in our nature as a people to demand a seat at the table, a vote in our political future, and consent of the governed. We learned from Britain's poor example that power needs to be checked, or else the powerful will walk all over the unempowered.
We can do better. Goodbye!

Blushing at this end from the joy of reading your latest epistle. Twas cool. Improving toward Perfection is a life time goal of many. Never achieved but trying, right? Some need so much help. If we each do our part, maybe Hades will be a little less full during that long eternal party without air conditioning.
Though at any party on this planet, I do not hang with every body. I stay in the corner, spy a few prior acquaintances or friends, and talk the night away. I am not too much on meeting and making great new friends from a large crowd. In fact, few parties do I attend. Who needs that or them? I am busy partying on Flickr.

Scripture Needs to Be Read Spiritually, Says Preacher
Delivers Final Lenten Meditation for Pope and Curia
ROME, MARCH 14, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Scripture is not only inspired by God, but also "breathes forth God," that is, the Holy Spirit inhabits Scripture and animates it, says the preacher of the Pontifical Household.
Capuchin Father Raniero Cantalamessa said this today in the Lenten meditation he delivered to Benedict XVI and the Roman Curia in the Redemptoris Mater Chapel of the Apostolic Palace.
The sermon was the last in a series of meditations the preacher gave this Lent.
The series, titled "The Word of God Is Living and Effective," reflects the theme of the next Synod of Bishops on the word of God, to be held in October.
Father Cantalamessa spoke about the two meanings implied by 2 Timothy 3:16 "all Scripture is inspired by God."
He explained that the more common meaning is the "passive" one, referring to the way that God directed the writers of the holy texts.
The second meaning, the preacher explained, is "active": Scripture, is not only "inspired by God" but also "spirates God." "After having dictated the Scripture, the Holy Spirit is in a way contained within it; he ceaselessly inhabits it and animates it with his divine breath."
Setting him free
Father Cantalamessa then asked, "How do we approach the Scriptures in a way that they truly 'free' the Spirit that they contain?"
He said that "in Scripture, the Spirit cannot be discovered if not by passing through the letter, that is, through the concrete human vesture that the word of God assumed in the different books and inspired authors. In them the divine meaning cannot be discovered, if not by beginning from the human meaning, the one intended by the human author, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Luke, Paul, etc. It is in this that we find the complete justification of the immense effort in study and research that surrounds the book of Scripture."
But, Father Cantalamessa affirmed, there is a "tendency to stop at the letter, considering the Bible an excellent book, the most excellent of human books, if you will, but only a human book. Unfortunately we run the risk of reducing Scripture to a single dimension."
The Pontifical Household preacher pointed to a sign of hope: "That the demand for a spiritual reading of Scripture and one guided by faith is now beginning to be felt by some eminent exegetes."
The Capuchin urged a furthering of this "spiritual reading."
He explained: "To speak of the 'spiritual' reading of the Bible is not to speak of an edifying, mystical, subjective, or worse still, imaginative, reading, in opposition to the scientific reading, which would be objective. On the contrary, it is the most objective reading that there is because it is based on the Spirit of God, not on the spirit of man.
"Spiritual reading is therefore something that is quite precise and objective; it is the reading that is done under the guidance of, or in the light of, the Holy Spirit that inspired Scripture. It is based on a historical event, namely, the redemptive act of Christ which, with his death and resurrection, accomplishes the plan of salvation and realizes all of the figures and the prophecies, it reveals all of the hidden mysteries and offers the true key for reading the Bible."
Toward all truth
Father Cantalamessa said that this "spiritual reading" of Scripture applies to both the Old and New Testaments.
"Reading the New Testament spiritually means reading it in the light of the Holy Spirit given to the Church at Pentecost to lead the Church to all truth, that is, to the complete understanding and actualization of the Gospel," he said.
The preacher affirmed that spiritual reading both integrates and surpassed scientific reading: "Scientific reading knows only one direction, which is that of history; it explains, in fact, that which comes after in light of that which comes before; it explains the New Testament in the light of the Old which precedes it, and it explains the Church in the light of the New Testament.
"Spiritual reading fully recognizes the validity of this direction of research, but it adds an inverse direction to it. This consists in explaining that which comes before in the light of that which comes after, prophecy in the light of its realization, the Old Testament in the light of the New and the New in the light of the tradition of the Church."
Father Cantalamessa contended, then, that "that which is necessary is not therefore a spiritual reading that would take the place of current scientific exegesis, with a mechanical return to the exegesis of the Fathers; it is rather a new spiritual reading corresponding to the enormous progress recorded by the study of 'letter.' It is a reading, in sum, that has the breath and faith of the Fathers and, at the same time, the consistency and seriousness of current biblical science.
The Pontifical Household preacher ended his reflection with a word of hope regarding a return to a spiritual reading like that of the Church fathers.
The Capuchin said "from the four winds the Spirit has begun unexpectedly to blow again" and we "witness the reappearance of the spiritual reading of the Bible and this too is a fruit -- one of the more exquisite -- of the Spirit."
"Participating in Bible and prayer groups, I am stupefied in hearing, at times, reflections on God's word that are analogous to those offered by Origen, Augustine or Gregory the Great in their time, even if it is in a more simple language," he said. "Let us conclude with a prayer that I once heard a woman pray after she was read the episode in which Elijah, ascending up to heaven, leaves Elisha two-thirds of his spirit.
"It is an example of spiritual reading in the sense I have just explained: 'Thank you, Jesus, that ascending to heaven, you do not only leave us two-thirds of your Spirit, but all of your Spirit! Thank you that you did not give your Spirit to just one disciple, but to all men!'"

Winter to spring, Seasonal changes! Ha ha ! Everything changes. This universal law dictates the universe as much as it guides each one of us. So celebrating everything I am surrounded by. May it be an ocean, a river, a rain drop or even wind and earth! Who says that there should not be a birth of a new river? Who says the Himalaya will not shift? Who says that man will not design another equally bewildered universe? May be everything is scheduled! I don’t know! Who says polar bears are not supposed to make room for other species as dinosaur did long ago? Who can say how long this beauty will continue its life? So I took my seat next to this flower. I love spring. Don’t you?

A well renowned colony of Black Guillemots nest in drainage holes along the esplanade wall at Oban. Although the esplanade itself is busy with local pedestrians and tourists, the birds pay little notice to them. Their confiding nature means, with patience, photographing them is relatively easy.
I watched this bird fly up to a drainage hole from the sea below, where it had been swimming and pair bonding with its (presumed) mate. Having entered the drain, it manoeuvred round so that it was facing outwards. Here it can be seen peering out, beak open as it uttered a whistling call.

From my favorite video game of all time, the most profoundly beautiful in the whole Zelda series in my opinion (along with Link's Awakening). The scenes with the giants left the strongest impression on me, so much so that I wanted to have one of my own. The end result is a bit of a blend of the original N64 model and the remade 3DS one.
This was made in the first half of 2016 and was largely dictated by the limits of the dark orange palette, which has thankfully expanded over the years, giving me the opportunity to touch up some things here and there.
Members of AFOL16+ may remember me asking ages ago about ways to attach ball turrets. Well, this is what it was for. The sturdiest solution I found was nesting a racing slick inside a motorcycle tire and then using that to grip one of these.
Comments and criticism welcome.

Eilean Donan Castle, Dornie, Scotland
Taken a few days after the previous upload on the way back from Skye. Storm Callum dictated that we left early and so a second opportunity to stop off and take a few more shots... well rather a lot actually. We arrived just after castle opening time, the fire in the great hall already lit. The sun hung around as long as it dared with the storm clouds approaching from the west before running for cover.
We stayed close on an hour crouched low by the side of the car with Mrs R valiantly acting as makeshift windbreak and lens wiper. I was hoping for that one shot of sunrays illuminating the castle surrounded by a dark stormy background, just like the image I had kept in my mind's eye all these years. It never materialised and so I cut my loses and packed up. It turned out to be the right call for no sooner had we crossed the bridge and drove pass the castle did the full force of storm Callum empty the heavens and that closed this particular photography chapter.
Always loved this song and lyrics... hope you do to
An amazing house preserved from the past and still a part of now standing tall and proud with a rebuild. The shape and size of any broch is dictated by the need for it and the ability of the builders. Here there appears to have been an amazing development made for strength and for beauty. Once the tower rose into sky and released the smoking signs of life, now the bright preserved ruin remains as a celebration of earlier ways of living.

Riders on Camargue horses:
The bulls are surrounded very tightly and thus led in the streets of the city to the transport truck. We can guess their presence by the surveillance of two riders and by a few hoofs forked in the middle of the legs of horses. Some riders ride without the stirrup feet.
Abrivado is a Provençal name which means momentum, haste. It consisted of driving bulls from their pastures to the arenas.
Bandido is also a Provençal tradition which means expelling. Originally, tradition dictated that a gang of young people would launch out following the horsemen with the intention of making a bull escape. To do so, they grabbed its tail or clung to the horns to tire it and finally strike it down.
According to Wikipedia, Nowadays, each of these terms designates a Provencal and Languedoc bullfighting tradition of simulating these transfers of bulls by releasing them into the closed streets of a town or village.
