The windows on unused barns are often the first thing that gets broken, either through neglect or vandalism by visiting city cousins. Decisions to keep up or not keep up with repairs on an aging barn are often made by default. Usefulness, even with our own bodies, many times dictates what gets repaired or ignored.

"No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given – when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children..." - Joan Winmill Brown (British actress and writer).

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 12th of December is "dice". Now, I am no taker of risks, nor fan of gambling, so dice are few and far between in my household. However I do have one small Eighteenth Century ivory set of dice. They are tiny - so small in fact that this week, I have decided to place them with two of my 1:12 miniature Christmas presents, keeping up my Christmas theme in my photostream for the month of December. The dice and brightly wrapped Christmas gifts are set against a background of my 1870s edition board of "Jeu de l'Oie" (Game of the Goose). I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile!

The "Game of the Goose", also known as the "Royal Game of the Goose", is one of the first board games to be commercially manufactured. It is a race game that relies only on dice throws to dictate progression of the players. The board is often arranged in the form of a spiral, with game pieces starting on the most outward part. All spaces on the game board are numbered, with some depicting an illustration of either a goose or a hazard indicating a specified action. The aim of the game is to reach the 63rd space before any of the other players, while avoiding hazards such as the Hotel, the Bridge, and Death. The game is thought to have originated in Italy during the Fifteenth Century, being given by Francesco de Medici as a gift to King Philip of Spain. In the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century, the game gained immense popularity throughout Europe. The game's popularity led it to different adaptations throughout Europe and the United States. Despite numerous adaptations, the rules have mostly remained the same throughout the years.

These Christmas presents are 1:12 artisan pieces. They were hand made by husband and wife artistic team Margie and Mike Balough who own Serendipity Miniatures in Newcomerstown, Ohio.

What a wonderful distraction from bird photography when this doe raised her head to scrutinise me! It was her large ears that first caught my attention.

I couldn't believe my luck when presented with this opportunity to make the sort of image I've always dreamed of. However, Sod's Law dictated that seconds later a noisy trail bike thundered up the track, billowing dust and scaring the doe. In one graceful leap, she was lost from view ...

I won't elaborate.

'NEVER MISSING A TRICK.'

A close-up of a very confiding Black Guillemot that had just finished preening. I noticed that they seemed to be quite nosy birds, always watching what the others were doing nearby.

Another afternoon of beach fun , playing with driftwood and pebbles. The wood that I find washed up under the cliffs dictates what I can do. Some pieces are too good not to use so they become the basis for what evolves. demons Dance Alone is by the Residents. Sadly it's been nearly a year of dancing alone this year.

The practice of writing in Japan [and China] began by rubbing a hard ink stick in a small amount of water. Rubbing small, soft circles over and over just to create a small amount of ink was considered part of the writing process, a moment to calm the mind before one dips their brush into the ink. As the hand writes what the mind dictates, the characters on the paper are an expression of that unification of mind and body, both in meaning and style. The mixture of soot and gelatin in traditional ink sticks determines its shade of color, the feel of the initial strokes, and how much the ink blots or cracks on the paper, all features which one can skillfully use to express the most in their writing. Golden Plover everywhere

Cropped from a much larger flock

Don't normally post 'flock' shots but the sheer numbers present @ Kidwelly Quay, which were well in excess of a 1000, dictated differently.

I was in Washington, DC, yesterday -- where the ceilings on the Metro stations never cease to mesmerize me. Here's a shot of the Tenleytown stop that I took on an earlier trip.

I'm still learning how to compose this sort of wide-angle shot, but what I find odd/interesting is that I often prefer perspectives that center the vanishing point (lower center, here) -- instead of placing it off-center, as the "rule of thirds" would seem to dictate. Thoughts?

… one month yes, and one no, my Provincial Health Authority of Messina sends me on a three-day mission (from Taormina) to the Civil Hospital of Lipari, located in via Sant'Anna…In my spare time, free from work commitments, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion; the photographs that I present here were all taken in the months of this year 2023; I made various photos according to the dictates of street photography (or street photography), I made some portraits, having always met people in the hand, very willing to let themselves be photographed (perhaps it will be ... that the people of the island are open-minded, eager and used to to communicate with strangers..?!), some portraits were made of people intent on their work; all the photos were taken in the city of Lipari, except for two taken in the port of Milazzo, the departure and arrival point of the hydrofoils (but there is also the ship) for the Aeolian Islands. I met (and photographed) the sweet lady, very good and appreciated American artist, Mrs Janette Little (photographed together with her affable and very nice husband, of Aeolian origins); of the talented artist mrs Janette in addition to her portrait I propose two of her works, I had noticed them some time ago, I had wanted to bring some photos of these works with me, now I propose them in black and white because this is a monochrome series, I note however that the originals are in color, for those wishing to see his works, I add the link to his web site below.

Life and traffic both move at a steady pace on Norfolk Island, all more or less dictated by the cows who inhabit, and have right of way on, the island's roads.

[T] here is a monastic outlook which is common to all those who have elected to question the value of a life submitted entirely to arbitrary secular presuppositions, dictated by social convention, and dedicated to the pursuit of temporal satisfactions which are perhaps only a mirage. Whatever may be the value of “life in the world” there have been, in all cultures, men [and women] who have claimed to find something they vastly prefer in solitude.

I was struck by the shape of this Beech Tree which looked like a golfer part way through the "downswing". It is amazing how trees become shaped by their environment and very often you can determine the elements that have dictated their form. However, in this instance it would be hard to speculate what had caused this mature tree to become shaped in this way!

I love the mossy green arms swinging the "tree wood"!

It's three years since I made my first upload to flickr, so I am 3 today (plus too many more years LOL ;)

Thanks my friends for a great three years, and despite seeing so many friends come and for various reasons leave or start over, apart from the occasional bemusement it's been a trouble free time for me.

Advance warning :

I'm off work and around more or less as normal for the next week ... After that work commitments dictate that I will be a lot less frequent on flickr until the Autumn. I don't want to break away completely as I have for the previous two Summers, but as I don't like posting when I haven't got time to comment there will be a much bigger gap between my uploads. Thanks for understanding :-)

After the armistice in November 1918, the warring factions left the devartated landscape along the Western front orphaned.

After one of the bloddiest battles in history for four years, the gains along the Western front at most a mere mile.

The rulers and the butchers wiped out an entire generation of young men in these four insane years and those who survived had major psychological problems, were severly maimed or blind from the poison gas or were missing one or more limbs.

The fate that remained for them after the insane war was bitter poverty or begging. No one, but no one cared of them, even though they were supposedly devated to heroes.

The butchers like Haig, Foch and other scum got all the fame and fortune they had in no way deserved and it was they who were considered the unsurpassed heroes.

Allthough US President Wilson held the Germans responsible for the insane war, he did not accuse them for the outbreak of the conflict.

This is a very strange diplomatic statement to say the least, and in fact he meant to say that no one was guilty of the outbreak of the war.

It is therefor very strange to conclude that Germany was responsible for it and was senteneed to pay the war reparations.

Regardless, Germany had to start making recovery payments and the country was plunged into a great economic misery.

A certain Adolf Hitler who had fought as a volunteer in the insane war with the German army appeared on the political stage as an insignificant person and founded the political party "NSDAP" which was initially a very small party.

From the mid- 20 s onwards, the economy of Germany continued to improve, but this growth ended in 1930 with the Great Depression that raged worldwide and making Germany unable to meet its recovery payments. The party leader of the "NSDAP" Adolf Hitler managed to draw more and more peoples into his party and his political ideas through his talent for speaking and won a monstrous victory in the 1933 elections.

However, his party was characterized by extreme Nationalism and anti- Semitism.

The horific consequenses are known: WW 2 is a direct consequence of the insane WW 1.

The reason for this is the Treaty of Versailles in which Germany felt humilated to the bone and called this Treaty "Das Diktat" ( The Dictate).

Adolf Hitler took full advantage of this feeling of humilation.

And what have we learned from these horrible 2 world wars?

The answer is: NOTHING!!

We have now come to justice in one of the most serious economic crises after WW 2.

Of course the corona virus is to blame for this, but before the outbreak of the pandemic things did not go well economically, despite the many billions that the ECB injected in the economy.

Right- wing populism and nationalism are popping up in just about every country, countries becoming increaslinly intolerable towards eachother and the social cohesion between peoples increasingly disappearing.

The ECB continues to inject even more billions in the economy and that is the reason why many think it will not go that fast.

But those who know the history are starting to scratch their heads and have their reservation about this and especially how it will end if the bailout of the economy fails.

Of course I sincerely hope that I am totally wrong, but there are clearly signs that allows me to compare now and then.........

On April 23 Saint George's Day, the patron saint of Catalonia, is celebrated as well as Book Day. Tradition dictates that the men buy a rose for the women and that the women buy a book for the men.

Legend has it that a dragon was destroying the surroundings of a village (Montblanc, in the Catalan adaptation) until its inhabitants decided to give it one person per day, chosen by a draw, to thereby prevent any further destruction. One day it was the turn of the King's daughter and when the dragon was about to devour her a knight appeared, Saint George, and killed the beast. A rose bush emerged from the monster's blood from which the knight picked a rose and gave it to the princess.

Saint George's Day is a civic festival throughout Catalonia, a day on which Catalan culture and identity are vindicated. In city streets publishers and bookshops set up book stalls mixed with rose sellers and many writers offer to sign their works.

What's up everyone. Hope all you guys out there are doing well. This image I made back in December of last year. I had a few days all to myself, so I hopped into my truck and just drove. I had no real plans or anything. It was one of those trips where I just let the weather dictate my shooting. It was so awesome! The conditions were "ideal" for most people I'm sure, but for me the conditions were decent. In the past couple years I've really taken a strong liking for intimate and abstract scenes. Their nice because they make you think outside the box. They are the type of scenes that you can call your own. They are fun, challenging and in the end more rewarding than the grand landscapes. The crisp, cold and snowy conditions around Southern and central Utah were just right for these intimate scenes that I speak of.

A brief spotlight shines on the colorful hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. The light lasted maybe a minute and a half tops, before the area went completely into shadows. Peace and Love to all you guys out there, continue to inspire each other, happy shooting, and be on the look out for the spring. Looks like it's gonna be a good one. 😊

“What is ‘wrong’ in my life is not so much a matter of “sin” (though it is sin, too) but a matter of unawareness, lostness, slackness, relaxation, dissipation of desire, lack of courage and decision, so that I let myself be carried along and dictated by an alien movement. The current of “the world,” which I know is not mine. I am always being diverted into a way that is not my way and is not going where I am called to go. And only if I go where I must go can I be of any use to “the world.” I can serve the world best by keeping my distance and my freedom.”

- Thomas Merton (May 14, 1967) from A Year with Thomas Merton p.131

Today, I feel sadness for all the hate, power, greed, and selfishness that is going on in this world, and I feel compelled to address the situation with my work. I plead with all people, from the top to the bottom, to stop and think about the cruelty of what is happening in our world. We are all part of humanity and should be treated with dignity. The purpose of life is to live and let live, not to dictate and undermine people. We are all important human beings and should be treated as such. Life is better and happier when we treat each other with love, friendship, and acceptance and enjoy our diversity.

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, and stay safe! ❤️❤️❤️

Stay local - Another recent winter shot of Pendle Hill from Annel Cross in my local area. Sunlight just breaking through Pendle's cap and onto the 'Big End'. An area I frequented much during my 365 Project several years ago and haven't really shot much here since then to be honest.

Lockdown restrictions here in the UK dictate having to stay (very) local, so still making the best of the conditions on the doorstep. This is local to me but I'm saddened to see how many folk seem to disregard the current restrictions and are going about far and wide; selfish and shockingly disrespectful in my opinion.

The City of The Dome - The Guardians Of The Soul by Daniel Arrhakis (2021)

With the music : M83 - Waking Up (Oblivion Soundtrack)

youtu.be/UoEAMCz-UXM

The Cities of The Domes, initially built to protect us from solar radiation that reached extreme values as well as the great millennial storms that devastated the Earth due to climate change were now used for the surveillance of all citizens.

The anarchist and revolutionary groups revolted against the new Cloud Governments of Autocratic ideology that kept the peoples under a regime of constant surveillance and censorship of social communications networks.

Everything was controlled and predicted through navigation records, consumption habits, social and movement patterns. Large corporations dictated the prices of our lives and who deserved to live or die.

Cults and Artistic or Mystical Orders were constantly monitored and, although tolerated, became increasingly uncomfortable as they often contradicted the State's Political Thought Standard and challenged the instituted social order.

We were, however, "The Others" that in the light we observed, recorded patterns and collected data. During the night we acted and met as brothers who swore to defend Freedom, Humanity and their mystical values, but mainly the most unprotected and persecuted.

They called us "The Guardians of the Night" but we would like to consider ourselves more like "The Guardians of the Soul". Our objective - To restore the old traditions, the old arts and crafts but mainly to restore the ancestral mystical balance of Man with Nature in Freedom and Tolerance towards all creeds, religions, sexual orientation and races.

And to achieve our goal, the two mystical orders that had existed in the past were recreated: The Militar Order of The Silver Orchid and the Order Of The Golden Orchid.

The first, in the Past was a Military Order of fearless and courageous warriors who protected the innocent against Tyrant Lords, their symbol a silver orchid that they wore always around their necks.

His mystic faith was governed by Dharyehl's Commandments, the death of usurpers and tyrants their primary mission ...

At the top command of the order of the warriors are Mystic and Powerful Guardians, Masters that moving in the shadow disguised among the multitude, versing various arts.

His ability to disguise was accompanied by very singular energies and powers, telepathic, intuitive mediumship and manipulation of the primordial elements without neglecting the study of the arts of body fighting, sword and bow.

Yet in their commandments is not permitted the use of firearms.

Their costume, although sometimes diverse, is marked by the simplicity, of a dark color, the use of covers and hoods, an ornamental cane hides an often deadly sword.

Body cleansing and fasting are often accompanied by prayers and meditation and are one of the daily duties of the Guardians of the Golden Orchid

Have a great week my friends!

The tale of working men's hunger.

There must be thousands of these small diners "greasy spoons" all over the country catering for men at work.

The nature of the surrounding industry and the working conditions of the customers (dirty) often dictate that the decor is utilitarian and easily cleaned; but often the standard of the food is good.

Customers watching the kitchen operations leads to a certain honesty and cleanliness that many larger restaurants could do with.

“Even if everybody is looking at the same light bulb, the unique composition of an individual will dictate how they interpret and see things. Some people will only see things with their left eye (mind/moon), while others will use only their right (heart/sun). Some people are completely void of light and repel it immediately. For instance, a beetle will chase after an opening of light, while a cockroach will scatter at a crack of it. How are we different than the insects? Nobody is purely good or purely evil. Most of us are in-between. There are moths that explore the day and butterflies that play at night. Polarity is an integral part of nature — human or not human.”

Shio-Mgvime quickly turned into the largest monastic community in Georgia and by the end of the 6th century it was populated by as many as 2,000 monks. It became a vibrant center of cultural and religious activities and remained under the personal patronage of Catholicoi of Georgia. David IV "the Builder" (1089–1125) made it a royal domain and dictated regulations (typicon) for the monastery (1123). The downfall of the medieval Georgian kingdom and incessant foreign invasions resulted in the decline of the monastery. It saw a relative revival when the Georgian king George VIII (r. 1446–1465) granted Shio-Mgvime and its lands to the noble family of Zevdginidze-Amilakhvari to whom the monastery served as a familial burial ground up to the 1810s.

The monastery was ravaged by the invading Persian troops sent by Shah Abbas I of Safavid in 1614–6. Prince Givi Amilakhvari reconstructed it in 1678, but the 1720s Ottoman occupation of Georgia brought about another devastation and depopulation of Shio-Mgvime. Restored by Prince Givi Amilakhvari in 1733, the monastery was raided and the monks massacred by the Persians less than two years later. Subsequently, Shio-Mgvime was restored and its interior renovated in the 19th century, but it never regained its past importance and role in the spiritual life of Georgia. Under Bolshevik rule, the monastery was closed, but it is now functional and attracts many pilgrims and tourists.

I'm going to be posting a few Andean Hummingbird images over the course of the next few days. Bird diversity and ranges in the Andes are very restricted, often dictated by habitat and elevation. Because of that, the species I'll be posting have a very narrow range in the central Andes at around 2600 to 3000m elevation.

This tiny hummingbird flies around slowly, like a bee, and typically will poach the territories of larger, more dominate hummingbirds.

I know you

I believe, I believe there's love in you

Grid locked on the dusty avenues

Inside your heart, just afraid to go

I am more, I am more than innocent

But just take a chance and let me in

And I'll show you ways that you don't know

Don't complicate it,

Don't let the past dictate

Yeah,

I have been patient, but slowly I'm losing faith

So please, I know you baby

Flat or three-dimensional? No, that's not the question. Even subconsciously, we notice gradual changes in light and form. Yet, a uniform structure dictates the whole surface.

This wall covering in the Oslo Opera House must be an excellent 'sound diverter'. It covers the area where many people gather during breaks in a performance — the public toilets. During a small time slot, they can relieve themselves not only of bodily fluids. Happy to speak up for a short time, most people become noisy.

Thank you very much to my dear friend, who gave me her art and her great sense of solidarity, so that my camera only did, what she ought to ... Eternize such a majestic and unequaled sense of aesthetics in her movements, .. simply It is an honor to know that I can see her perform such magnificent choreographies, which her soul dictates.

Priests follow the letter of the law and miss the spirit. They seek to pin down, in ever lengthier discussions about the dictates of canon law, and in so doing direct their passion away from God, and toward the margins of life. It is a tremendous warning about how the religious spirit readily pivots from God, in legalism, obsessions, and fundamentalism. It is a curse upon life, and risks condemning individuals, if they forget what life can bring.

-Mark Vernon, Dante’s Divine Comedy, a guide for the spiritual journey

“I identify this heart with what I have called elementary experience; that is, it is something that tends to indicate totally the original impetus with which the human being reaches out to reality, seeking to become one with it. He does this by fulfilling a project that dictates to reality itself the ideal image that stimulates him from within.”

Compact

Not much going on here in the way of "photography", they were taken on a very cheap compact before I became properly interested in trying to make decent images.

Taken from a mountain that looked down on Pamplona. Not a huge mountain, old folks can take a sunday morning stroll to the top, but it is, nonetheless, a mountain, interesting because it has a very tragic history.

At the top, submerged, is a fort, it was built in the 19th century for one of those silly wars between people who wanted to install their preferred monarch, then it has a more shameful history after it was converted into a prison by a right wing dictating a-hole called Franco, in the thirties. At one time nearly eight hundred revolutionary prisoners escaped but, sadly, most were recaptured, 211 were shot, and just a handful got to France.

In today's world, where some forget their children's needs, I want to emphasize the importance of being there for our children, whatever their needs may be. We cannot dictate, we must accompany and help in every way!!!!! It is not easy!

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, stay safe, and laugh often! ❤️❤️❤️

So I would say the debate being how to structure such a simple shot.... Prescribed academic tenets would dictate to place it off from the center and apply the 1/3 principle.

However ask any New Topographics photographer and they would say take you artistry out of it and show it for what it is..

Just find a way that everything fits 'nicely' into the frame.

John Sarkowski did not rate photographic education very highly and in fact he thought it "could harm creativity, constraining one's personal visual exploration."

Describing the Creative Journey through Photography:

When I step out of my home, whether for a stroll or an errand, I know I'll be taking photographs. What will I capture? I'm uncertain. The sea, the sunset, the city lights... I photograph whatever my inner being dictates. It's serendipity! Then, when I return home, the real work begins. It's the search for images that tell a story! And the hardest part is the selection—there are images where my inner being says, "Look," but in reality, I don't see the beauty that serendipity provided at first! Then, as I begin to see, comes the astonishment at what has been given to me! But the search and the choice were mine! Just like in life!

This narrative reflects the journey of capturing life's unexpected beauty through the lens of a camera, where the inner intuition guides the eye, and the selection process reveals the surprising beauty found within the mundane moments. It mirrors the complexities of perception and the value of personal choice in cherishing life's nuances.
