I love this area of Barnes's Grove, Buckinghamshire. Where the mature Beech dictate man's journey through the wood as seen by how the trail weaves its way in deference to them. I've posted this trail before, but it's so wonderful there will probably be more :-)

I feel like I often let people dictate me who I am or who I should be, where I should feel safe or not. We often forget that everthing that can make our happiness is already within us. ♥

Most often we see this member of the bird family feeding in the outer small branches of trees or visiting a backyard feeder where they dart in and pick up a seed and depart quickly and normally never linger. They tend to be a bit inquisitive and also aggressive. They frequently hook up with waves of other birds both in navigation and also when foraging. They socialize with a number of other species like Chickadees, Kinglets and Warblers.
They may be a short distance migrant or stay for the winter which I think is dictated by the availability of food. When not visiting a backyard feeder they are probing loose bark on trees for larvae and adult invertebrates and in winter eating pine and spruce seeds.
This bird is gleaning insects in the outer branches of a cedar tree with a few warblers close by.

... every two months, my Provincial Health Authority of Messina (Sicily) sends me on a mission for three days (from Taormina) to the Civil Hospital of Lipari, located in via Saint Anne ... In my spare time, free from commitments of work, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion; the photographs I present here were all taken in February of this year 2022; I took photos according to the dictates of street photography, I made some portraits, having always met people in the hand and very willing to let themselves be photographed (maybe ... that the islanders are open-minded, eager and used to communicate with strangers ..?!), some portraits were made of people intent on their work, some fishermen were intent on repairing their nets, a lady showed me one of her beautiful work, a blanket she made with knitting needles , hanging on her balcony (it reminded me of the shawls my grandmother made, also made with hand knitting needles); all the photos were taken in the city of Lipari, except three, taken in the dark in the port of Milazzo, the port of departure and arrival with hydrofoils (but there is also the ship) for the Aeolian Islands.

Roleplay Character - Tʜᴇ Lᴇᴀɴᴀɴ Sɪᴅʜᴇ
Fighting and running from, turning from
Who we really are
Cannot suppress so let's find the one
We have shaped so far
Flying too close to the sun
As if we're invincible
Cannot dictate, dominate the earth
That we're living on
We can't defy the laws
Cut the laws that we consummate
Around the world
We grow weaker as we exterminate
The only thing that gives thing
That brings air and life to us
Wake up one day and find
That what we got is serious
We are the children of the sun
We are the children of the sun
The human greed and our creed
Is all that we have to share
Knee deep in tragical
Fabrical issues everywhere
Cannot replace the one
Chase the one that we used to be (used to be)
It isn't how we were, why we're here
What we're meant to be
Fighting and burning from, turning from
Who we really are
Cannot suppress so let's find the one
We have shaped so far
Flying too close to sun

The Shio-Mgvime monastery (Georgian: შიომღვიმე, Shiomghvime, literally meaning "the cave of Shio") is a medieval monastic complex in Georgia, near the town of Mtskheta. It is located in a narrow limestone canyon on the northern bank of the Kura River, some 30 km from Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital.
Shio-Mgvime quickly turned into the largest monastic community in Georgia and by the end of the 6th century it was populated by as many as 2,000 monks. It became a vibrant center of cultural and religious activities and remained under the personal patronage of Catholicoi of Georgia. David IV "the Builder" (1089-1125) made it a royal domain and dictated regulations (typicon) for the monastery (1123). The downfall of the medieval Georgian kingdom and incessant foreign invasions resulted in the decline of the monastery. It saw a relative revival when the Georgian king George VIII (r. 1446-1465) granted Shio-Mgvime and its lands to the noble family of Zevdginidze-Amilakhvari to whom the monastery served as a familial burial ground up to the 1810s.
The monastery was ravaged by the invading Persian troops sent by Shah Abbas I of Safavid in 1614-6. Prince Givi Amilakhvari reconstructed it in 1678, but the 1720s Ottoman occupation of Georgia brought about another devastation and depopulation of Shio-Mgvime. Restored by Prince Givi Amilakhvari in 1733, the monastery was raided and the monks massacred by the Persians less than two years later. Subsequently, Shio-Mgvime was restored and its interior renovated in the 19th century, but it never regained its past importance and role in the spiritual life of Georgia. Under Bolshevik rule, the monastery was closed, but it is now functional and attracts many pilgrims and tourists.

Duck On A Rock...
Last Wednesday was a day for getting out of the house and using the appropriate distancing measures dictated by our governing authorities; we took advantage of a rather warm day and made our way to Joyce Archdekin Park on Hurontario where the cherry blossoms were in full bloom.
I brought my long lens as I knew there was no getting close to them. The city had wrapped all the trees in caution tape and the benches were cordoned off with snow fencing. they even had a security guard posted to ensure the rules were being adhered to.
I kept a reasonable distance and got quite a few good shots of these beautiful Japanese Sakura blossoms. in the creek that runs alongside the park. i found this little guy perched on a rock relaxing in the sun.

I am privileged to know this inspiring young man who teaches on one of my young people courses at the University. Earlier this year I nominated him for an honorary doctorate for his commitment, passion and drive in working with young people to get them out of a vicious cycle of knife crime and gang involvement. The SOS project at St Giles Trust is the largest offender led project in the U.K. His SOS PLUS work in going into schools and mentoring young people has turned round many vulnerable young lives.
As Junior says, a person’s past does not dictate their future. He is testament to this.
Junior Smart was photographed in the historic Royal Naval College chapel at the University of Greenwich following being awarded his Honorary Doctorate in Education.
I am so so proud of him!
You can almost feel the quiet bond between them. On Mackinac Island, teams like this allow the visitor to experience the pace of an earlier time. Here the horses serve more than merely transportation, they are deeply ingrained in the island’s history and culture.
The welfare of horses on Mackinac Island is a top priority. Strict guidelines have been implemented to ensure that the animals are treated with love and respect. Local laws dictate how many hours a horse can work each day. There are also guidelines on the maximum weight a horse can pull. These rules help prevent overworking and ensure the horses remain healthy.
Please enjoy the team's details in Large.
Thank you so much for your visit!
There has been a lot of talk about Vero vs Instagram these past two weeks.
I am now on Vero if anyone wants to say hi. It has a really nice feel to it so far. I was never comfortable with Instagram. For a start I would never let a photo sharing app dictate to me what crop ratio to use. Secondly it feels like a popularity contest where the hubs are normally inclined to feature the popular photographers (thinking that having thousands of followers equates to talent, thus generating an "in crowd" feel which always got on my nerves). And lastly the reach is terrible, great photos hidden by reels of dogs on skateboards and girls modelling wedding dresses etc..
I would say at this point for me Flickr is still tops and I've never understood why photographers have abandoned it in favour of Insta. Ok, so its not free but here I have formed some great friendships and it just feels more inclusive. And it easy to organise my images into albums and galleries etc..
That's my thoughts on the matter. Of course social media is far less important then enjoying this wonderful hobby but I do really appreciate the friendships formed. Have a great weekend x
i will be away until September 25, but will post and visit your photostream as internet conditions dictate. I'm hoping new mexico will surrender some good photo material. it is always so beautiful in santa fe and taos.
Minnamurra Falls are in Buddaroo National Park. Unfortunately, due to the locked gate, the entry fee and opening times, and the fenced viewing platform, the time and composition for this shot were dictated by the nanny state I live in. If we ever get out of this current lockdown I may have a chance of a revisit, and if I do I am going to climb over that fence.

The first day of Spring is normally a time for celebration. But not this year. This Spring is going to be one we'll all remember and regret. I let the mood of these dark days dictate the taking and the editing of this image. There was no way to tell at the time whether the storm was moving in on us or wending its way out. So it goes with poor Ukraine.
Hello All!
Common Redpolls are in the finch family and live in the extreme north of North America. In the winter, they migrate only as far south as food dictates. The furthest south they travel is southern Canada and the northern reaches of the northern states of the U.S. This image is from March 2018. I didn't spot any last year.
I appreciate you taking the time to view this image and leave a comment, I always love hearing from you! Have a terrific day!

A Martenitsa (Bulgarian: мартеница, pronounced [ˈmartɛnit͡sa]; Macedonian: мартинка, romanized: martinka; Greek: μάρτης, romanized: mártis; Romanian: mărțișor; Albanian: verore) is a small piece of adornment, made of white and red yarn and usually in the form of two dolls, a white male and a red female. Martenitsi are worn from Baba Marta Day (March 1) until the wearer first sees a stork, swallow, or blossoming tree (or until the end of March (April 1)). The name of the holiday means "Grandma March" in Bulgarian and Macedonian, the holiday and the wearing of Martenitsi are a Bulgarian and Macedonian tradition related to welcoming the spring, which according to Bulgarian and Macedonian folklore begins in March.[1] Inscribed in 2017 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. [2][3][4]Tradition dictates that Martenitsi are always given as gifts, not bought for oneself. They are given to loved ones, friends, and those people to whom one feels close.[citation needed] Beginning on the first of March, one or more are worn pinned to clothing, or around the wrist or neck, until the wearer sees a stork or swallow returning from migration, or a blossoming tree, and then removes the Martenitsa.[citation needed]
In Bulgarian folklore and Macedonian Slavic mythology the name Baba Marta (Bulgarian: Баба Марта, "Grandma March") evokes a grumpy old lady whose mood swings very rapidly. The common belief is that by wearing the red and white colors of the Martenitsa, people ask Baba Marta for mercy. They hope that it will make winter pass faster and bring spring.[citation needed] The first returning stork or swallow is taken as a harbinger of spring and as evidence that Baba Marta is in a good mood and is about to retire.[citation needed]
The ritual of finally taking off the Martenitsa is different in different parts of Bulgaria and North Macedonia. Some people tie the Martenitsa on a branch of a fruit tree, thus giving the tree health and luck, which the person wearing the Martenitsa has enjoyed themselves while wearing it.[6] Others put it under a stone with the idea that the kind of creature (usually an insect) closest to the token the next day will determine the person's health for the rest of the year. If the creature is a larva or a worm, the coming year will be healthy and full of success. The same luck is associated with an ant, the difference being that the person will have to work hard to reach success. If the creature nearest the token is a spider, then the person is in trouble and may not enjoy luck, health, or personal success.[citation needed]
Wearing one or more Martenitsi is a very popular Bulgarian and Macedonian tradition. The time during which they are worn is meant to be a joyful holiday commemorating health and long life.[citation needed]
Modern Martenitsi take a wider variety of forms and often incorporate colored beads and other elaboration

"No matter how we may dread the rush, the long Christmas lists for gifts and cards to be bought and given – when Christmas Day comes there is still the same warm feeling we had as children..." - Joan Winmill Brown (British actress and writer).
The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 12th of December is "dice". Now, I am no taker of risks, nor fan of gambling, so dice are few and far between in my household. However I do have one small Eighteenth Century ivory set of dice. They are tiny - so small in fact that this week, I have decided to place them with two of my 1:12 miniature Christmas presents, keeping up my Christmas theme in my photostream for the month of December. The dice and brightly wrapped Christmas gifts are set against a background of my 1870s edition board of "Jeu de l'Oie" (Game of the Goose). I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile!
The "Game of the Goose", also known as the "Royal Game of the Goose", is one of the first board games to be commercially manufactured. It is a race game that relies only on dice throws to dictate progression of the players. The board is often arranged in the form of a spiral, with game pieces starting on the most outward part. All spaces on the game board are numbered, with some depicting an illustration of either a goose or a hazard indicating a specified action. The aim of the game is to reach the 63rd space before any of the other players, while avoiding hazards such as the Hotel, the Bridge, and Death. The game is thought to have originated in Italy during the Fifteenth Century, being given by Francesco de Medici as a gift to King Philip of Spain. In the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century, the game gained immense popularity throughout Europe. The game's popularity led it to different adaptations throughout Europe and the United States. Despite numerous adaptations, the rules have mostly remained the same throughout the years.
These Christmas presents are 1:12 artisan pieces. They were hand made by husband and wife artistic team Margie and Mike Balough who own Serendipity Miniatures in Newcomerstown, Ohio.

The windows on unused barns are often the first thing that gets broken, either through neglect or vandalism by visiting city cousins. Decisions to keep up or not keep up with repairs on an aging barn are often made by default. Usefulness, even with our own bodies, many times dictates what gets repaired or ignored.

What a wonderful distraction from bird photography when this doe raised her head to scrutinise me! It was her large ears that first caught my attention.
I couldn't believe my luck when presented with this opportunity to make the sort of image I've always dreamed of. However, Sod's Law dictated that seconds later a noisy trail bike thundered up the track, billowing dust and scaring the doe. In one graceful leap, she was lost from view ...

The practice of writing in Japan [and China] began by rubbing a hard ink stick in a small amount of water. Rubbing small, soft circles over and over just to create a small amount of ink was considered part of the writing process, a moment to calm the mind before one dips their brush into the ink. As the hand writes what the mind dictates, the characters on the paper are an expression of that unification of mind and body, both in meaning and style. The mixture of soot and gelatin in traditional ink sticks determines its shade of color, the feel of the initial strokes, and how much the ink blots or cracks on the paper, all features which one can skillfully use to express the most in their writing. Don't normally post 'flock' shots but the sheer numbers present @ Kidwelly Quay, which were well in excess of a 1000, dictated differently.
I was in Washington, DC, yesterday -- where the ceilings on the Metro stations never cease to mesmerize me. Here's a shot of the Tenleytown stop that I took on an earlier trip.
I'm still learning how to compose this sort of wide-angle shot, but what I find odd/interesting is that I often prefer perspectives that center the vanishing point (lower center, here) -- instead of placing it off-center, as the "rule of thirds" would seem to dictate. Thoughts?

I met (and photographed) the sweet lady, very good and appreciated American artist, Mrs Janette Little (photographed together with her affable and very nice husband, of Aeolian origins); of the talented artist mrs Janette in addition to her portrait I propose two of her works, I had noticed them some time ago, I had wanted to bring some photos of these works with me, now I propose them in black and white because this is a monochrome series, I note however that the originals are in color, for those wishing to see his works, I add the link to his web site below.

Life and traffic both move at a steady pace on Norfolk Island, all more or less dictated by the cows who inhabit, and have right of way on, the island's roads.
I was struck by the shape of this Beech Tree which looked like a golfer part way through the "downswing". It is amazing how trees become shaped by their environment and very often you can determine the elements that have dictated their form. However, in this instance it would be hard to speculate what had caused this mature tree to become shaped in this way!
I love the mossy green arms swinging the "tree wood"!

It's three years since I made my first upload to flickr, so I am 3 today (plus too many more years LOL ;)
Thanks my friends for a great three years, and despite seeing so many friends come and for various reasons leave or start over, apart from the occasional bemusement it's been a trouble free time for me.
Advance warning :
I'm off work and around more or less as normal for the next week ... After that work commitments dictate that I will be a lot less frequent on flickr until the Autumn. I don't want to break away completely as I have for the previous two Summers, but as I don't like posting when I haven't got time to comment there will be a much bigger gap between my uploads. Thanks for understanding :-)
After the armistice in November 1918, the warring factions left the devartated landscape along the Western front orphaned.
After one of the bloddiest battles in history for four years, the gains along the Western front at most a mere mile.
The rulers and the butchers wiped out an entire generation of young men in these four insane years and those who survived had major psychological problems, were severly maimed or blind from the poison gas or were missing one or more limbs.
The fate that remained for them after the insane war was bitter poverty or begging. No one, but no one cared of them, even though they were supposedly devated to heroes.
The butchers like Haig, Foch and other scum got all the fame and fortune they had in no way deserved and it was they who were considered the unsurpassed heroes.
Allthough US President Wilson held the Germans responsible for the insane war, he did not accuse them for the outbreak of the conflict.
This is a very strange diplomatic statement to say the least, and in fact he meant to say that no one was guilty of the outbreak of the war.
It is therefor very strange to conclude that Germany was responsible for it and was senteneed to pay the war reparations.
Regardless, Germany had to start making recovery payments and the country was plunged into a great economic misery.
A certain Adolf Hitler who had fought as a volunteer in the insane war with the German army appeared on the political stage as an insignificant person and founded the political party "NSDAP" which was initially a very small party.
From the mid- 20 s onwards, the economy of Germany continued to improve, but this growth ended in 1930 with the Great Depression that raged worldwide and making Germany unable to meet its recovery payments. The party leader of the "NSDAP" Adolf Hitler managed to draw more and more peoples into his party and his political ideas through his talent for speaking and won a monstrous victory in the 1933 elections.
However, his party was characterized by extreme Nationalism and anti- Semitism.
The horific consequenses are known: WW 2 is a direct consequence of the insane WW 1.
The reason for this is the Treaty of Versailles in which Germany felt humilated to the bone and called this Treaty "Das Diktat" ( The Dictate).
Adolf Hitler took full advantage of this feeling of humilation.
And what have we learned from these horrible 2 world wars?
The answer is: NOTHING!!
We have now come to justice in one of the most serious economic crises after WW 2.
Of course the corona virus is to blame for this, but before the outbreak of the pandemic things did not go well economically, despite the many billions that the ECB injected in the economy.
Right- wing populism and nationalism are popping up in just about every country, countries becoming increaslinly intolerable towards eachother and the social cohesion between peoples increasingly disappearing.
The ECB continues to inject even more billions in the economy and that is the reason why many think it will not go that fast.
But those who know the history are starting to scratch their heads and have their reservation about this and especially how it will end if the bailout of the economy fails.
Of course I sincerely hope that I am totally wrong, but there are clearly signs that allows me to compare now and then.........

On April 23 Saint George's Day, the patron saint of Catalonia, is celebrated as well as Book Day. Tradition dictates that the men buy a rose for the women and that the women buy a book for the men.
Legend has it that a dragon was destroying the surroundings of a village (Montblanc, in the Catalan adaptation) until its inhabitants decided to give it one person per day, chosen by a draw, to thereby prevent any further destruction. One day it was the turn of the King's daughter and when the dragon was about to devour her a knight appeared, Saint George, and killed the beast. A rose bush emerged from the monster's blood from which the knight picked a rose and gave it to the princess.
Saint George's Day is a civic festival throughout Catalonia, a day on which Catalan culture and identity are vindicated. In city streets publishers and bookshops set up book stalls mixed with rose sellers and many writers offer to sign their works.
Another building I've long wanted to photograph is The Broad.
After the dark series of the concert hall, I thought I'd brighten things up a bit. Besides, as I've said before, sometimes the images dictate how they want to be processed.
Sometimes it is all in how we perceive things. Finding understanding of others, comes with growth withing yourself.
