Thanksgiving at Bagram. Since we can’t be with family, the DFAC folks go all out to decorate and have the traditional Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings. 401st personnel took turns serving before they sat down to enjoy the spread.

About the 401st:
The 401st Army field Support Brigade provides Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines, the tools and resources necessary to complete the mission. D.B. Sweeney, an actor who has starred in movies and television mini-series such as Lonesome Dove, Memphis Belle and The Cutting Edge, visited Joint Base San Antonio (Ft. Sam Houston) 26 Jan., 2011 to visit with Servicemembers and thank them for their service. Sweeney handed out autographed pictures and took time to visit with wounded warriors at the Center for the Intrepid, a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility, and with inpatients at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). He had a bite to eat with Servicemembers at DFAC, the DoD’s largest dining facility. Sweeney also observed the 232nd Medical Battalion’s Combat Medic training and ended his visit by meeting wounded warriors and their families at the Warrior and Family Support Center. This was his second visit to JBSA.
Sweeney, a staunch supporter of the U.S. armed forces, started the organization Letters From Hollywood in 2010 to encourage other actors, actresses and celebrities to write letters of thanks and support to Servicemembers. Every Wednesday, a new letter is posted to thanks troops for their service and let them know they are not forgotten. Leaders and Soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division (LI) Sustainment Brigade celebrated Thanksgiving with a traditional meal at the Muleskinner Dining Facility on Fort Drum, New York Nov. 24,2020.
As part of Army tradition, unit command teams manned the serving lines to show their gratitude for their Soldiers.
A special thanks to the Soldiers of the 593rd Quartermaster Company who worked tirelessly to prepare this year's meal.

Capt. Junga Lee and other Fort Wainwright-based officers serve Soldiers Thanksgiving Dinner at Fort Wainwright's North Star Dining Facility Nov. 25. The Mayflower is a kick! It's still sitting out, though now it's in a back corner. Though it strikes me that in 1620, people in the Baghdad area were probably dealing with much different history than people on Cape Cod.

Casey DFAC takes big Army award

CAMP RED CLOUD – Back in October we told you how the Casey Main dining facility at Camp Casey was in the running for top honors as the best dining facility, worldwide, in the civilian category.
The civilian category is the one for dining facilities staffed by civilians rather than Soldiers.
Sabrina Wilson, the dining facility’s manager, knew that an announcement was coming sometime in December as to which Army dining facilities worldwide had won a prestigious Department of the Army Phillip A. Connelly award.
The annual award recognizes excellence in Army food service, and is meant to foster professionalism among Army food service personnel. The program is run out of Fort Lee, Va.
The much-awaited announcement of the latest awards came Dec. 29 by e-mail while Wilson was in her office at Casey Main and her white-uniformed staff of middle-aged Korean employees was getting lunch ready.
No, it turned out, Casey Main had not been named the best in the Army in its category, but it had been selected as runner-up, not a bad thing at all for an Army-wide completion.
The e-mail was from the Eighth Army’s food adviser, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Donald Urie, and it offered congratulations “for a job well done in taking Runner-Up...This is a monumental event....”
“I was in shock,” Wilson said last week. “Not because I didn’t think we were good enough.”
She hurried out to gather about 35 employees for a quick “cook’s meeting” in the dining area.
“Everyone was working as usual because we were into lunch preparation,” said Wilson, “but I needed five minutes because I had just received the news and I didn’t want to hold the news.
“I told them the great news we had won and they were all happy,” Wilson said.
Sometime this month a sign will be going up outside Casey Main declaring proudly that the facility is a 2012 Connelly Award runner-up, Wilson said.
But so far, word has gotten around among at least some of their Soldier-customers. Casey Main has about 350 to 450 Soldiers who line up for each of the three meals daily. “They were excited for us, they were happy for us,” she said.
And Lt. Col. Steven Finley, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Casey, welcomed the news too.
“It’s great news for our Camp Casey community that the Army has chosen the Casey Main Dining Facility as runner-up in its category throughout the entire Army,” said Finley.
“The Casey Main staff puts their heart into giving our Soldiers a first-rate dining experience day in, day out, and this award is official recognition of that quality service,” he said. “I look forward to seeing them continue that excellence, which makes an important difference for our Soldiers.”
This spring Wilson and one of those staffers will fly to San Diego where this year’s Connelly awards will be formally presented to the winners.
“Even though we’re not first, “Wilson said, “to me…we did it to the best of our abilities and we still have room to grow so we can continue to strive to be first place.
“We continue to perfect and just do our job the right way, daily, then I think we can make first place next year,” said Wilson, “if we continue doing what we’re doing.”

"It's like the passing of the torch from one to the other," said Veazey. "I am looking forward to the cake cutting Tuesday at the hospital DFAC - This is an honor and it means a lot. But more importantly, it's a time-out to remember the legions of Soldiers and Families who have served beginning in colonial times and over the years."

D.B. Sweeney, an actor who has starred in movies and television mini-series such as Lonesome Dove, Memphis Belle and The Cutting Edge, visited Joint Base San Antonio (Ft. Sam Houston) 26 Jan., 2011 to visit with Servicemembers and thank them for their service. Sweeney handed out autographed pictures and took time to visit with wounded warriors at the Center for the Intrepid, a state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility, and with inpatients at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). He had a bite to eat with Servicemembers at DFAC, the DoD’s largest dining facility. Sweeney also observed the 232nd Medical Battalion’s Combat Medic training and ended his visit by meeting wounded warriors and their families at the Warrior and Family Support Center. This was his second visit to JBSA.
Sweeney, a staunch supporter of the U.S. armed forces, started the organization Letters From Hollywood in 2010 to encourage other actors, actresses and celebrities to write letters of thanks and support to Servicemembers. Every Wednesday, a new letter is posted to thanks troops for their service and let them know they are not forgotten. Sweeney also toured Iraq in 2008 and continues to be a major supporter of Servicemembers in Hollywood both through his visits and through Letters From Hollywood (http://www.lettersfromhollywood.army.mil.
