MÁV-HÉV Helyiérdekű Vasút Zrt.: Disconnected from each other and isolated from the rest of the railway network, four suburban railway lines (one of them with a branch) form the system of the Budapest Railways of Local Interest (Budapesti Helyiérdekű Vasút, BHÉV), which has a total length of 97 km. They all have the same characteristics: standard track gauge and 1,100 V DC power supply. The lines are commercially designated H5 to H9. Since November 2016, this company has been a subsidiary of the Hungarian state railways MÁV.

 

The service is basically carried out with 91 three-car EMUs of the MX series (motor cars numbers 861 to 892) and MXA (motor cars numbers 901 to 1000 and 1101 to 1150), build in the former German Democratic Republic by LEW "Hans Beimler" Hennigsdorf between 1971 and 1983. Seven EMUs of the MIX/A series (motor cars) and PXXV/A (trailer cars) also remain in service, runnig only on line H7. They come from the modernization of as many of the 27 trains that were built by BHÉV itself in its Budafoki workshops between 1963 and 1966.

 

Two MXA series EMUs just left the Boráros tér terminal in Budapest, working a service in the H7 line to Csepel.

During a 2006 visit to Melbourne's tram system, I had the pleasure of a tour of the two substations on the network that were still using mercury arc rectifier equipment, at West Brunswick and Maribyrnong. This is a close-up of the open cabinets showing two of the tubes in action..

Developed in the early 1900's, the mercury arc rectifier tube was one of the primary means of AC to DC rectification prior to the advent of semiconductor diodes. These particular substations in Melbourne took in high voltage AC power and converted it to 600 v DC power for use by the trams.

 

I believe that the two substations I saw during my visit have since had the mercury arc rectifier equipment decommissioned, although there are several still functional in tram museums including the one in Brisbane.

MÁV-HÉV Helyiérdekű Vasút Zrt.: Disconnected from each other and isolated from the rest of the railway network, four suburban railway lines (one of them with a branch) form the system of the Budapest Railways of Local Interest (Budapesti Helyiérdekű Vasút, BHÉV), which has a total length of 97 km. They all have the same characteristics: standard track gauge and 1,100 V DC power supply. The lines are commercially designated H5 to H9. Since November 2016, this company has been a subsidiary of the Hungarian state railways MÁV.

 

The service is basically carried out with 91 three-car EMUs of the MX series (motor cars numbers 861 to 892) and MXA (motor cars numbers 901 to 1000 and 1101 to 1150), build in the former German Democratic Republic by LEW "Hans Beimler" Hennigsdorf between 1971 and 1983. Seven EMUs of the MIX/A series (motor cars) and PXXV/A (trailer cars) also remain in service, runnig only on line H7. They come from the modernization of as many of the 27 trains that were built by BHÉV itself in its Budafoki workshops between 1963 and 1966.

New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) work motor no. 35654 is seen laid up in Concourse Yard. The car was converted to work service from Lo-V "World's Fair Steinway" car no. 5654, which was one of 50 built by the St. Louis Car Co. in 1938. They were distinguished as "World's Fair Steinway" Lo-V cars. "World's Fair" differentiated their body style rather than the typical Lo-V carbody, and referring to the fact that the cars were ordered to supplement the Flushing Line fleet in advance of the 1939 World's Fair. "Steinway" referred to the gearing of the traction motors: a special lower gear ratio was required to climb the steep grades in the Steinway Tunnels, which carry the Flushing Line under the East River between Queens and Manhattan. "Lo-V" referred to the lower electrical voltage in the controls and trainlines; previous subway and elevated equipment routed 600 volt DC power through the controls and trainlines (this equipment was nicknamed "Hi-V" after the introduction of the Lo-V equipment.

The Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge bascule bridge (erected 1912-1913) in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada.

 

This (William) Scherzer Rolling Lift bascule bridge combines the balanced counterweight of a conventional bascule bridge, with a unique rolling lift motion that all but eliminates friction.

 

It was built between 1912-1913 by the Dominion Bridge Company to carry the Canadian Northern Railway main line across the Rideau Canal.

 

The bridge was originally designed to be run with a DC powered electric motor, but in 1915 the bridge was forced to be operated manually for the next 63 years until it was closed in 1978.

 

This bridge was designated as a National Historic Site in 1983.

 

It is one of the last remaining bridges of its kind in Canada.

 

Smiths Falls also hosts the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, which is truly, a train lovers delight and definitely worth a visit!
