BNSF 8295 leads the H-LAUAMA through Colorado Springs, CO on a beautiful fall morning.

 

This is a hark back shot to my days in North Dakota. With DC-powered EMDs fronting coal trains across the northern plains and miles and miles of straight, flat track, one wasn't left with much to shoot other than telemashes. I cut my teeth on the telemash when I got into this hobby, so I often find myself going back to what I'm most familiar and comfortable with.

 

By 2010, the SD75s were starting to show their wear. The red and silver of the classic Warbonnet scheme was starting to fade, but this particular unit's paint had held up quite well. As of this posting (18 May 16), this is the last photo I ever took of a SD75I, and, sadly, it might end up staying that way...

Forever Evil was one of the more creative New 52 stories, and a very good one as well in terms of deepening the characterization of villains in the DC universe. And yes, I accidentally left out Batman and Deathstroke, but intentionally left out Owlman since I wasn't very pleased with how he turned out.

A decade ago, I made my first trip to the curves at Lake Park, MN to see BNSF's parade of trains on the Staples Subdivision. I'd admired the photographs of others from this area from afar for years. When I was called to serve my first parish in Minnesota just a couple of hours from here, it was near the top of my list of places to visit. A lot has changed since that day, both for the railroad and for me. I've moved again, had two more kids, met a lot of great friends, and unfortunately had to bid farewell for now to a few others. I feel right at home in Minnesota, though. I think I've been here long enough to say, "I remember when..."

Like, I remember when we didn't have ATCS and there wasn't CTC on a good chunk of the western part of the Staples Sub. It was kind of nice to just turn on the scanner and sit by the tracks, waiting to hear something like "BNSF 9819 east at Hawley ready to copy" for their warrant from CTC Richards Spur to CTC Wadena. That meant it was time to get the camera set up and listen for the train in the distance.

And while I missed out on the days of DC power on these coal trains, at least I can say I remember when I saw some SD70MACs claw their way out of the Red River valley on a nice late summer evening.

An endangered NS SD70 was rolling westbound on the Harbor Belt at Calumet Park with the 35J on a warm spring afternoon. The standard cab SD70 fleet is being decimated by the rebuild program that will make the DC-powered standard cab motors into AC-powered motors with new wide-nose cabs.

This was another banner day of railfanning in eastern North Dakota. Before this shot, I had chased the M-GFDNTW south with a dual-window SD60M providing the power. This coal train seen here was meeting a coal load on the siding behind me which had 3 SD70MACs providing the ponies. That all-AC-powered coal train was a glimpse of things to come for northern plains coal. EMD 9054 and its 3 DC-powered sisters were on the way out by this point in time, but you could still catch them more often than not.

BNSF 1444 leads the Pikes Peak Local south through Larkspur, CO on a beautiful Labor Day morning.

 

I was out in Spruce, CO having just shot a northbound ACe when the first sighting popped up at Joint Line Railfanning (groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Joint_Line_Railfanning/info): Pikes Peak Local in Castle Rock. Sweet, I thought. Then a second message popped: The PPL is not stopping in Castle Rock to do work and is continuing south. Even better, I thought. The PPL typically has nice power, so unless it was a H2 B40-8W, it was going to be a nice catch. I wrote and asked what the power was and got "Green SD60 on the point...". Game changer. Those ex-Burlington Northern SD60Ms were the prize catch back when I lived in North Dakota. The era of DC-powered coal was in its twilight in the mid-to-late 2000s so I shot as many of these units as I could back then. I always preferred the dual-window version to the Triclops, but catching either was a win. The dual-window just happened to be my favorite model and paint scheme in the wide-cab era.

 

I hustled to Larkspur hoping to beat the train, and it turns out I got there in plenty of time. As I was standing there with both camera at the ready, I was wondering what I was going to see pop around the bend. Was it going to be a Triclops or a dual-window? Would the BN nose herald be present, and, if so, would it be in good condition? Would the American flags that these units sported still be in place? The anticipation built, especially as I heard the train making its way to me. As it popped around the bend, I'm pretty sure I let out an audible, "Woooo!"

 

I was thinking I was never going to catch a green SD60M again. The last time I caught one was a Triclops in Grand Forks, ND on 12 Sep 08...2,915 days before this particular Labor Day. The last time I caught a dual-window? 7 Jun 08, 3,012 days prior! Ironically, that shot was taken in Palmer Lake!

 

But things came together just perfect on this day, and after 8 years, I was finally able to catch my favorite locomotive leading the charge again!

BNSF 9380 leads an eastbound coal train out of the Dilworth Yard in Dilworth, MN for a run up the grade out of the Red River Valley along the BNSF Staples Sub.

 

Well, here it is...my very first ACe, replete with white numberboards, high headlights, and a non-isolated cab! At just over a year old, the shiny newness has worn off of, at the time, EMD's most recent entry into the locomotive market.

 

Those of us in the northern plains had to wait some time for the new model to make its way into coal service, not that we were clamoring for that to happen. The ACe led the way for northern coal to switch from DC power to AC power and thus the days of trains being powered by SD60Ms, Oakways, and SD75I/Ms were numbered.

 

At the time, I was not enamored with the esthetics of the notch-nosed, flared radiator ACe, especially since it meant the death of the DC-powered models that were much-liked, but my views on this unit softened over time to where it's now what I set my sights on when I head out trackside. Hard to believe these units have been plying the rails for more than a decade now.

 

As for these 1st-generation, non-isolated cab ACes, they were relegated to trailing/DPU status-only in 2009 or 2010 due to crew safety concerns over vibration/noise if I recall correctly...

A digital build of p_o_s_t_y's upgraded Lex Luthor Power Armor. I wanted to build something that uses both system and Bionicle/Hero Factory, I dont often build with these parts and I wanted to get a feel for what parts there are and how they connect, rebuilding this MOC seemed like a great place to start. A fairly simple build with great lines. I'm using a modified version as a Blacktron Exo-Suit.

VR-N. July 2020. Clansman Interconnecting Box 3-Radio (IB3) ANR Version

 

1. This is the Clansman Gold Top ANR Active Noise Reduction version of the Interconnecting Box 3-Radio or IB3. The IB3 is the main unit in the Clansman vehicle harness. It provides the Intercom Amplifier, local/remote rebroadcast and a stabilised DC power supply for the rest of the harness and can be connected up to three Clansman radios. There is audio socket for the local operator, a remote user can also be connected into the harness to use an installed radio or to have intercommunication with the crew. Supplied in good working condition, Grade 2. NSN: 5820-99-842-2189.

 

2. The (IB3) Interconnecting Box - 3 Radio is a combined control, junction and power supply unit for all Harness items, It contains an IC amplifier and acts as the inlet/outlet point for the Main Harness distribution ring, for up to 3 Radios plus an outlet for the parallel connection of the vehicle IC systems when in Harbour.

Interface between IB2 is Harness circuit is by cables connected to two 12 pole connectors marked HARNESS, one at each end of box.

(a) Normal Harness use by Crew, Drivers or Commanders Boxs.

(b) Intercommunications and CALL facilities between the remote user and the local operator.

Many UP coal trains pass through Elmhurst on a daily basis, with the majority of them powered by a pair of AC motors up front, and another on the rear in DPU mode.

 

A twist to that observation was this coal train with an oddball DC-powered SD70M splitting the standard pair of AC motors. With all of the power up front, this coal train had no DPU on the rear.

M4 750 damaged due to Bomb blast at near Vavniya in 2000 back in service after repair.

M4 752 re painted Red and Yellow colours for use Jaffna Intercity. again Repainted Blue & Silver.

Upgraded with Air brake at C.M.E. Ratmalana.

M4 751used for Inaugural run “Yal Rani” Passenger Train Between Kankasantrei Murukandi in 11.07.2022
