Mixed AC and DC power combinations seem to be becoming more frequent on CN. Here train #Q148 approaches South Plympton Road, between Wyoming and Wanstead on CN's Strathroy sub., behind ES44AC 3806 and SD75I 5759.
L527 passes the elevator complex at Nampa Alberta with a soon to change in the future consist.
With the forst DC to AC rebuilt Dash 9's leaving the Watec factory (using Dash 9 cores from CN's fleet) and rumors of an SD70/75 rebuild program in the works consists such as this may look different in the future.
CN's Northern Alberta lines restrict the use of larger modern AC power due to weight restrictions on bridges, causing DC power to be the norm rather than the exception.
BNSF 8227 is waiting with empty coal gons just east of the switch in Fisher, MN before it takes the siding to meet two coal loads storming eastbound on the Grand Forks Sub.
An unusual evening as three trains were meeting in Fisher on a line that saw maybe a couple of trains per day. Also unusual was not the Warbonnet SD75M leading the way but rather the Exec MAC. DC-powered locomotives still ruled northern plains coal during this time, and it was uncommon to see any AC power at the time.
But that was just a foreshadowing of what was to come as over the next 12-18 months, the Oakways, the SD60Ms, and the SD75s were loved up here were slowly shuffled out of Glendive to make room for MACs and ACes. It was a great time to be a railfan up there as we were able to catch the last days of DC-powered coal...

A pair of H2 SD75Ms lead a coal train out of Midwest Energy's coal dock and down the Coal Runner in Superior back in April 2006. We didn't know it at the time, but it turned out that 2006 would be the zenith of coal shipments into MERC in Superior, with almost 22-million tons of coal into the facility. BNSF handled the record coal tonnage back then mostly with their fleet of DC coal motors of SD60s and SD75s. They averaged 3-4 coal trains into Superior each day off the Brainerd Sub. led by the DC power and another train a day off the Hinckley.
The Hinckley trains were starting to be DPed at this time so the train waiting to dump in the distance was probably one of those. Back then it was one train out and another ready to spot so all the coal could be dumped. It was a great time to shoot coal trains on the BNSF and I got quite a few of them living in McGregor at this time.
Leader 8269 has since been rebuilt and lives on as BNSF 269 and still makes trips in and out of Superior in manifest service. BNSF the last few years only averages about half the coal tonnage into Superior when you compare to the high point of 2006.
An LED exciter-lamp retrofit and power supply I made for my Kalart-Victor 70- and 75-series projectors. I fabricated a holder/heat sink to mount a high-intensity LED onto and mounted the assembly onto to a plastic disc. I then mounted the assembly into a sound drum unit from a parts projector, using the drum's end cap to hold it in place through holes drilled in the disc for the purpose, to avoid modifying the drum.
The power supply was made from a power supply module, case, and other parts purchased through electronics parts suppliers. I modified the case, installed the parts, and wired everything up.
Those vintage Kalart-Victors are solid, quiet-running machines, their major weakness being a lot of 60-Hertz (or 50Hz for export models) hum in the sound. Unlike other projector makes using DC-powered lamps, the exciter lamps in these machines were AC-powered; thick filaments in the lamps, intended to minimize hum, did not completely squelch the noise. I originally envisioned replacing the original lamp with some kind of internal retrofit, untill I had an LED light-bulb moment. With this gadget, I just remove the old-school exciter lamp and slip this retrofit into place and kiss the exciter lamp hum goodbye.
BNSF 5884 leads a westbound coal empty re-route through the frozen landscape near Petersburg, ND on the Devils Lake Sub.
BNSF 5884 was just a month old when this shot was taken, and she signals the changes that were coming for northern plains coal trains in the mid-to-late 2000s. At the time, these coal trains were almost-exclusively DC-powered, which is unthinkable today, but as BNSF's roster started to swell with ES44ACs and SD70ACes, SD70MACs displaced the Oakways and SD75s out of Glendive, MT and AC-powered trains became less and less rare to see.
At the time this shot was taken, it stood out for the new Swoosh'd leader and the fact that this Clay Boswell empty was running on the Devils Lake Sub thanks to a derailment along its normal route on the KO or Jamestown Sub...
A productive afternoon at the Huson Bridge on the edge of Jay Cooke Park near Wresnshall, MN along BNSF's Lakes Sub. back on Oct. 1, 2006 yielded several solid scores including this coal empty still sporting a green SD60M leading a pair of Oakways. Miss the DC powered coal trains like this one out of Superior heading for the Brainerd Sub.
BNSF 8215 leads a pair of uniquely-adorned SD60Ms and a westbound coal empty down the Hillsboro Sub in Merrifield, ND.
The trailing units are BNSF 9297 and BNSF 9277. The 9297 was the famous dual-scheme merger unit while the 9277 was the only (as far as I can find) widecab EMD unit to ever wear the H1 paint scheme. At the time, I would have preferred one of those two were on the point, but the passage of time and the extinction of DC-powered Warbonnets on coal make the leader much more tolerable!
This shot was taken with the "Nifty Fifty", Canon's entry-level, 50mm lens (which I paid $79.95 for a new copy from B&H in Nov '05). I have not used it much since I got it all those years ago, but I couldn't pass it up for that price!

Pretty crazy how much some things have changed in only 5-8 years.
In 2007 I was out in North Dakota getting the dying era of DC powered coal trains. AC-DP powered coal trains were just starting to come to the northern coal route out of Glendive. In 2007 SD75's and SD60M's still were the strong hold out here.
This Spring Creek Mine, WY, to Superior, WI, DEEX coal load is seen here crossing Muskrat Creek just west of North Almont with old school power. North Almont is located on the section between Dickinson and Mandan.
A pair of red and silver EMDs leads a Clay Boswell coal empty south through Hillsboro, ND as they prepare to meet a pair of northbounds on the town's namesake Subdivision.
As far as I can tell, BNSF 8301 did not survive to make it through Progress Rail's SD75 rebuild program...intact. My understanding is it was cannibalized for parts and then was going to be scrapped. But on this day, it did what DC-powered EMD widecabs did...it was leading northern plains coal.
BNSF 8230 leads the H-LINDIL (Lincoln, NE - Dilworth, MN) off of the Moorhead Sub at Moorhead JCT in Moorhead, MN and across the KO Sub and onto the Prosper Sub.
At first glance, with this being the mid-2000s, you would think this was a coal train given the power. But since it was mid-2007, some of the DC-powered coal units were finding their way onto other trains. These two were a surprise to see as I had heard the DS calling this train with a FURX unit up front, so I was expecting a SD40-2 on the point, but that unit was third in the consist.
Moorhead JCT here was the premiere place to catch action in the Fargo-Moorhead area. This shot it looking east toward the Dilworth Yard. The double track mains going away from me are the KO Sub, part of BNSF's northern transcon. The train is coming off the Moorhead Sub which is part of the Great Northern's old transcon. The train is entering the Prosper Sub which leads to the Fargo Yard. However, this train would clear the diamond and then back down the KO Sub into the DIlworth Yard. Sometimes, though, the H-LINDIL would come off the Moorhead Sub and onto the KO Sub using the tracks in the right foreground and then back into the yard...I never could figure out which route it would take.
Looking at my notes for this shot, I caught 3 trains here in a 14 minute span: an eastbound Otter Tail Valley train heading east, the H-NTWGFD heading out of the yard and up the Prosper Sub for Grand Forks, and this Warbonnet-led beaut...

2K23 Newbury to Reading. Class 387, an Electrostar electric multiple unit, is a dual-voltage passenger train built by Bombardier Transportation for various UK rail operators, including Great Western Railway and Heathrow Express. Featuring 2x2 seating, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning, these units can run on both third-rail DC power and overhead AC lines, making them versatile for regional and semi-fast services. The Class 387 represents the final Electrostar order and reached a top speed of 110 mph.
BNSF 8174 (SD60M) and BNSF 8264 (SD75M) lead a northbound manifest in Palmer Lake, CO.
By mid-2008, the DC-powered widecabs and Oakways that had been assigned to northern plains coal had been mostly kicked out of Glendive and scattered to other corners of BNSF's system. This temporary home did not last very long as more and more GEVOs filled BNSF's roster and displaced SD40-2s and power like this from hauling most other non-coal trains.
I was on vacation from North Dakota to Colorado when I stumbled upon this pair. The dual-window SD60M in whiteface remains my all-time favorite paint scheme, and, sadly, my days of catching them with any frequency were already getting numbered by this point. Despite actually moving to Colorado just 6 months later, I never caught another one leading on the Joint Line until 8 years later.
This particular photo got a heavy dose of Photoshop in order to make it presentable. A cloud had shaded the foreground leaving the houses and cliffs in the back bathed in perfect sunlight. Some layer masks were needs to "save" the train, so if things look a little "off", that's why...
An empty grain train pulls into the siding to meet a coal train at Medina. Medina is located on the Jamestown Sub 80 miles east of Mandan. The Jamestown Sub runs 176 miles between Mandan and KO Jct Switch near Fargo. Back in 2007 DC power still was the main stay for most of the trains across this route.
A sea of Armour Yellow as almost one hundred UP motors fill up the deadlines in North Yard in Salt Lake City. Most of these engines are SD70Ms, part of Union Pacific's effort to sideline DC power.
Welcome to the World of PSR
BNSF 6313 brings up the rear of a southbound coal train heading across the famous Santa Fe bridge on the south side of Larkspur, CO.
For as long as I've railfanned in Colorado, I don't have many (if any?) shots from the east side of the bridge here for some reason. Not sure why...maybe the scenery? At least the Santa Fe paint on this side of the bridge has held up better than the west side.
This coal train was running 3x3 which normally would be unusual but BNSF has been running some odd combinations as of late. They're typically 2x2, but I've seen them 2x0, 1x2, or 4x0 and, when you look at my future my Photostream, you'll see an all-DC powered coal train!

BNSF 8301, an EMD SD75I, leads a SD75M and Clay Boswell empties out of the yard in Grand Forks, ND for a run down the Hillsboro Sub.
DC-powered coal was still the stronghold in 2006, and catching SD75s in Warbonnet was still considered common on northern plains coal. These trains ran pretty much just like this, typically two or three units up front and no DPUs.
I chased this train south, and here's a shot in Hillsboro I shared previously:

C&NW ROHSC is headed to South Morrill where UP will call it CROHS for LCRA at Halstead, TX. Here is evidence that crappy numberboards on Union Pacific units are not a new phenomenon. A few NS B-boat were leased as kickers for a few months and used to supplement DC power on trains between the mines and South Morrill as car counts on the trains were increasing. This ended as new AC deliveries pushed the DC power off the coal trains. The 9440 was likely cut up at LTEX around 2018.

CN local train 546 or the Squamish turn is by far my favorite train on the CN system. Ever since I first took a bus all the way to Brunswick beach to see 546, my favorite thing to do was to walk up the tracks and find amazing shot after amazing shot. It really doesn't ever get old with this sub and I could spend my whole life shooting every rock cut and tunnel this line has to offer. BCRail's old mainline really does not disappoint, you know your on a great line when you can spend 2 hours traveling just to get a shot of a gevo leading 2 boxcars and come back happy. Maybe I'm just weird but this is definitely the most scenic and pretty line on all of CN and maybe in all of Canada.
That's why I was quite sad to hear that 546 was temporarily stopping operations to Squamish due to lack of traffic. Even though it was temporary, its never a good sign for the future when trains stop due to slow traffic, especially when only 1 industry keeps this line alive. I got into the game a bit to late to shoot 571/570 between Williams Lake and Squamish, (by far the more scenic part of the BCR.) so I made sure to shoot 546 as much as I could.
After a few weeks 546 is back tearing up the Howe sound and a Sunday-Thursday schedule seems to be consistent. Even with the current strikes in the Ports of BC, todays 546 is hauling 33 boxcars up for the Squamish docks with an additional 45 copper gons for storage. With an increasingly rare all DC powered lash up, 546 is making good time as they cut through a rock cut near Horseshoe Bay. I've shot this spot before, so I figured id try something different by climbing up the rock ledge on the other side of the tracks, Its slippery and wet out and one misplaced step will surely send me crashing down onto the right of way. Even then I crouch right on the edge and lean out with my camera for the shot because my brain hasn't properly developed risk vs reward yet. One day I wont be so lucky but until then, we ball.
Remember when Thoroughbred Dash 9s used to be common as dirt? Slater does. Here we see a trio of them passing the MP 115 MB in Calvert, AL under the ID of NS A32. This would have become NS 182 and would have begun its trip to Birmingham later that day. Nothing special for the time because the AC44C6M rebuild program (which consisted of rebuilding DC powered D9-44CWs, nicknamed Dash 9s, into AC powered AC44C6Ms) was still about 5 years old (if my memory serves me correctly), and had not progressed nearly to the point it had today. But even the most common things become antiquated over time.
A little history about this spot. Decades ago, the Frisco had a branch line going to the Tombigbee River near where the AM/NS Calvert steel mill (which the train in the photo and video originated from) is currently located, and that branch line crossed over the Southern main line at this spot. One wouldn't guess it if they rode through the area today since the Frisco branch is long gone. I remember my dad telling me about it years ago and I didn't believe him until I looked at a map because it wasn't at all obvious that there was once a railroad that crossed Highway 43 and NS (formerly Southern) at this location. Also, the Tombigbee River joins the Alabama River to form the Mobile River just South of AM/NS.

A trio of Oakways is on the head end of Clay Boswell coal empties as they wait for a new crew in the yard in Grand Forks, ND.
It wouldn't be too much longer and this train would be underway as I previously uploaded:
www.flickr.com/photos/chris_paulhamus/15739734648/
EMD 9047 is the only Oakway I can recall seeing that had a gold nose chain. Not sure why, but it was pretty cool-looking.
I liked the Oakways, and was glad to catch them in their latter-stages of life on the BNSF. They were still in the DC-powered coal power pool at this juncture, but it wouldn't be long until the AC motors moved in and knocked them to other types of service. I was hoping the CitiRail GEVOs would be a modern-day Oakway, but, yeah, that didn't happen. Anyway, hard to beat a solid lashup of Oakways!
Annoyingly the only place I could find a 1.5A glass fuse was in an old DC power supply... which I planned to use to make the fuse wire glow! I will find another 1.5A fuse the right size and revisit.
I needed more DOF as the top is way out, but ran out of time and batteries in the speedlight were flat.

Two SD75s and a Oakway SD60 bring a loaded UKEEMAD through Floodwood, MN back on May 3, 2003. The BNSF ore trains still featured mostly DC power without a DP pusher in 2003. The DC units, SD60/SD75 types, were usually kept pretty clean back then. My dad and I chased this train from Gunn to Brookston on our day of railfanning that started out in Tamarack on this cold spring day.
At this time I lived in Tamarack and the KEEMAD running midday out of Keewatin was a train I caught many times on the Lakes Sub. I guess showing KEEMAD slides and chasing this train was how I got the K Mad moniker that stuck.
