A productive afternoon at the Huson Bridge on the edge of Jay Cooke Park near Wresnshall, MN along BNSF's Lakes Sub. back on Oct. 1, 2006 yielded several solid scores including this coal empty still sporting a green SD60M leading a pair of Oakways. Miss the DC powered coal trains like this one out of Superior heading for the Brainerd Sub.

Pretty crazy how much some things have changed in only 5-8 years.

In 2007 I was out in North Dakota getting the dying era of DC powered coal trains. AC-DP powered coal trains were just starting to come to the northern coal route out of Glendive. In 2007 SD75's and SD60M's still were the strong hold out here.

This Spring Creek Mine, WY, to Superior, WI, DEEX coal load is seen here crossing Muskrat Creek just west of North Almont with old school power. North Almont is located on the section between Dickinson and Mandan.

CN 120 has four DC units as it rounds a curve (CN 2307, CN 2674, CN 8828 & CN 8854).

BNSF 6313 brings up the rear of a southbound coal train heading across the famous Santa Fe bridge on the south side of Larkspur, CO.

For as long as I've railfanned in Colorado, I don't have many (if any?) shots from the east side of the bridge here for some reason. Not sure why...maybe the scenery? At least the Santa Fe paint on this side of the bridge has held up better than the west side.

This coal train was running 3x3 which normally would be unusual but BNSF has been running some odd combinations as of late. They're typically 2x2, but I've seen them 2x0, 1x2, or 4x0 and, when you look at my future my Photostream, you'll see an all-DC powered coal train!

MÁV-HÉV Helyiérdekű Vasút Zrt.: Disconnected from each other and isolated from the rest of the railway network, four suburban railway lines (one of them with a branch) form the system of the Budapest Railways of Local Interest (Budapesti Helyiérdekű Vasút, BHÉV), which has a total length of 97 km. They all have the same characteristics: standard track gauge and 1,100 V DC power supply. The lines are commercially designated H5 to H9. Since November 2016, this company has been a subsidiary of the Hungarian state railways MÁV.

The service is basically carried out with 91 three-car EMUs of the MX series (motor cars numbers 861 to 892) and MXA (motor cars numbers 901 to 1000 and 1101 to 1150), build in the former German Democratic Republic by LEW "Hans Beimler" Hennigsdorf between 1971 and 1983. Seven EMUs of the MIX/A series (motor cars) and PXXV/A (trailer cars) also remain in service, runnig only on line H7. They come from the modernization of as many of the 27 trains that were built by BHÉV itself in its Budafoki workshops between 1963 and 1966.

Two MXA series EMUs leaving the terminal station at the Örs vezér tere transport hub, working a service on line H9 to Csömör. Of the entire BHÉV network, lines H8 and H9 are the only ones on which trains run on the left hand side.

An empty grain train pulls into the siding to meet a coal train at Medina. Medina is located on the Jamestown Sub 80 miles east of Mandan. The Jamestown Sub runs 176 miles between Mandan and KO Jct Switch near Fargo. Back in 2007 DC power still was the main stay for most of the trains across this route.

A pair of H2 SD75Ms lead a coal train out of Midwest Energy's coal dock and down the Coal Runner in Superior back in April 2006. We didn't know it at the time, but it turned out that 2006 would be the zenith of coal shipments into MERC in Superior, with almost 22-million tons of coal into the facility. BNSF handled the record coal tonnage back then mostly with their fleet of DC coal motors of SD60s and SD75s. They averaged 3-4 coal trains into Superior each day off the Brainerd Sub. led by the DC power and another train a day off the Hinckley.

The Hinckley trains were starting to be DPed at this time so the train waiting to dump in the distance was probably one of those. Back then it was one train out and another ready to spot so all the coal could be dumped. It was a great time to shoot coal trains on the BNSF and I got quite a few of them living in McGregor at this time.

Leader 8269 has since been rebuilt and lives on as BNSF 269 and still makes trips in and out of Superior in manifest service. BNSF the last few years only averages about half the coal tonnage into Superior when you compare to the high point of 2006.

BNSF 8301, an EMD SD75I, leads a SD75M and Clay Boswell empties out of the yard in Grand Forks, ND for a run down the Hillsboro Sub.

DC-powered coal was still the stronghold in 2006, and catching SD75s in Warbonnet was still considered common on northern plains coal. These trains ran pretty much just like this, typically two or three units up front and no DPUs.

I chased this train south, and here's a shot in Hillsboro I shared previously:

A sea of Armour Yellow as almost one hundred UP motors fill up the deadlines in North Yard in Salt Lake City. Most of these engines are SD70Ms, part of Union Pacific's effort to sideline DC power.

C&NW ROHSC is headed to South Morrill where UP will call it CROHS for LCRA at Halstead, TX. Here is evidence that crappy numberboards on Union Pacific units are not a new phenomenon. A few NS B-boat were leased as kickers for a few months and used to supplement DC power on trains between the mines and South Morrill as car counts on the trains were increasing. This ended as new AC deliveries pushed the DC power off the coal trains. The 9440 was likely cut up at LTEX around 2018.

Annoyingly the only place I could find a 1.5A glass fuse was in an old DC power supply... which I planned to use to make the fuse wire glow! I will find another 1.5A fuse the right size and revisit.

I needed more DOF as the top is way out, but ran out of time and batteries in the speedlight were flat.

Junction of what is mostly Trax, Salt Lake County's Light Rail system lines. There is also a Southern Pacific line going through the space. Trax is powered by overhead 750 Volt Direct Current (DC) power lines.

Happy Telegraph Tuesday!

Wightwick Manor (pronounced 'Wittick') is a Victorian era house built to resemble an Elizabethan style manor house but equipped with all of the mod cons of the late 19th century, including electricity (DC powered by an on-site generator), indoor plumbing, central heating and even a venting/cooling system.

Taking inspiration from a lecture on 'the House Beautiful' by Oscar Wilde, the first owner's son, Theodore, and his wife Flora decorated its interiors with the designs of William Morris and his Arts and Crafts contemporaries. The house portrays life during the Victorian era with original Morris wallpapers and fabrics, De Morgan tiles, Kempe glass, and many Pre-Raphaelite works of art. It is one of only a few surviving examples of a house built and furnished under the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Wightwick was built in two phases; the first was completed in 1887 and the house was extended (everything to the right of the 3 gables on the left) in 1893 just to provide accommodation for the family's guests.

The house was first offered to the National Trust in 1936, but it was turned down because the house was only 50 years old! The following year the owners sweetened the pot by offering an endowment to maintain the house and the NT accepted. The offer included a proviso that the family could continue to occupy part of the house (which they did until 1986) while the rest was open to the public.

A trio of Oakways is on the head end of Clay Boswell coal empties as they wait for a new crew in the yard in Grand Forks, ND.

It wouldn't be too much longer and this train would be underway as I previously uploaded:

www.flickr.com/photos/chris_paulhamus/15739734648/

EMD 9047 is the only Oakway I can recall seeing that had a gold nose chain. Not sure why, but it was pretty cool-looking.

I liked the Oakways, and was glad to catch them in their latter-stages of life on the BNSF. They were still in the DC-powered coal power pool at this juncture, but it wouldn't be long until the AC motors moved in and knocked them to other types of service. I was hoping the CitiRail GEVOs would be a modern-day Oakway, but, yeah, that didn't happen. Anyway, hard to beat a solid lashup of Oakways!

Two SD75s and a Oakway SD60 bring a loaded UKEEMAD through Floodwood, MN back on May 3, 2003. The BNSF ore trains still featured mostly DC power without a DP pusher in 2003. The DC units, SD60/SD75 types, were usually kept pretty clean back then. My dad and I chased this train from Gunn to Brookston on our day of railfanning that started out in Tamarack on this cold spring day.

At this time I lived in Tamarack and the KEEMAD running midday out of Keewatin was a train I caught many times on the Lakes Sub. I guess showing KEEMAD slides and chasing this train was how I got the K Mad moniker that stuck.

Elephant-style EMDs in the form of a SD75M, an Oakway SD60, and a triclops SD60M lead a Clay Boswell coal empty west out of the fields of sunflowers and into the town of Fisher, MN along BNSF's Grand Forks Sub on a hot July afternoon.

So this was a surprise train for me. I was in this spot hoping to catch the M-SUPMIN, but this train showed up first and had my attention for the rest of the evening. DC-powered locomotives had mostly taken a brief leave of absence on the Clay Boswell trains in the summer of 2007, but they came roaring back in style on this train. Their days were certainly numbered in this capacity as the fleet of AC-powered locomotives grew, but it was nice to be there as the sun set on the DC-powered coal's storied career...

An interesting mix of AC/DC power provide the muscle needed to pull this loaded coal train up the "Rathole" near Keno, KY. NS 7522 leads the train under the third and final high bridge at Shelton Rd before the Rathole becomes slightly less dramatic south of Greenwood, KY.

CN's newer AC power (GE ES44AC's and ET44AC's) is commonly found on CN 377, but here two slightly older DC units (SD70M-2 CN 8819 and ES44DC CN 2284) lead CN 377 through Dorval just as the sun cooperates on a partially sunny afternoon.

While not as common as they once were, CN's "newer" DC power continues to work off the revenue miles for the time being. Here we see a pair of SD70Is bracketing a Dash 9 on M399, working through the curve just west of Lapeer.

Racing through Minami-Senju in northwest Tokyo, JR East's version of a geometry train nears the end of its quick jaunt across the Joban Main Line at Ueno.

Built in 2002 by Hitachi and based in Katsuda in Ibaraki, JR East operates its unique E491 Series inspection train, nicknamed "East i-E". On board are a myriad of equipment to measure track, roadbed, catenary, telemetry, along with a plethora of cameras to inspect its rail network. While its primarily used by JR East, second and third sector railways with OLE infrastructure can request inspections, making this train flexible enough to operate anywhere on either AC or DC power.

This train is the only example in service and has proven very elusive for many, me included, to catch, more so than Doctor Yellow. I'm happy to finally bag it after only 4 years!

A repainted SD75M and a SD60M lead the westbound M-SUPMIN (Superior, WI - Minot, ND) out the Devils Lake Sub near Powell, ND.

It's getting to be late 2008 and the first generation DC-powered widecab EMDs have been mostly pushed off of northern plains coal and have found work elsewhere in BNSF's vast system, like these two bouncing between Minot and Superior hauling freight. Obviously I would have preferred the SD75M in Warbonnet paint, but the H2 paint they put on these units held up much better over time for some reason than the same paint BNSF applied to the SD70MACs...

Coal loads head east to Sherco in Becker after waiting for clearance in Sartell. Seems like they've been adding more DC power to these trains as of late.

Wightwick Manor is a Victorian era house built to resemble an Elizabethan style manor house but equipped with all of the mod cons of the late 19th century, including electricity (DC powered by an on-site generator), indoor plumbing, central heating and even a venting/cooling system.

Wightwick was built in two phases; the first was completed in 1887 and the house was extended in 1893 just to provide accommodation for the family's guests.

Hard to believe that the SD60/75 era on alot of class 1's is coming to an end in 2016. Slow economy is really killing off the older power.

Back in 2007 DC powered coal trains still roamed the northern coal route thru Glendive/Mandan. Here a couple ex-Santa Fe SD75's and an ex-Soo Line leaser SD60 power this empty coal train back for loading at Decker Mine. The train is seen here passing the elevator at Cleveland, about 20 miles west of Jamestown.
