CN's newer AC power (GE ES44AC's and ET44AC's) is commonly found on CN 377, but here two slightly older DC units (SD70M-2 CN 8819 and ES44DC CN 2284) lead CN 377 through Dorval just as the sun cooperates on a partially sunny afternoon.

The Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge bascule bridge (erected 1912-1913) in Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada.

This (William) Scherzer Rolling Lift bascule bridge combines the balanced counterweight of a conventional bascule bridge, with a unique rolling lift motion that all but eliminates friction.

It was built between 1912-1913 by the Dominion Bridge Company to carry the Canadian Northern Railway main line across the Rideau Canal.

The bridge was originally designed to be run with a DC powered electric motor, but in 1915 the bridge was forced to be operated manually for the next 63 years until it was closed in 1978.

This bridge was designated as a National Historic Site in 1983.

It is one of the last remaining bridges of its kind in Canada.

Smiths Falls also hosts the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, which is truly, a train lovers delight and definitely worth a visit!

A repainted SD75M and a SD60M lead the westbound M-SUPMIN (Superior, WI - Minot, ND) out the Devils Lake Sub near Powell, ND.

It's getting to be late 2008 and the first generation DC-powered widecab EMDs have been mostly pushed off of northern plains coal and have found work elsewhere in BNSF's vast system, like these two bouncing between Minot and Superior hauling freight. Obviously I would have preferred the SD75M in Warbonnet paint, but the H2 paint they put on these units held up much better over time for some reason than the same paint BNSF applied to the SD70MACs...

A 1/3 scale model of the Edison electrical plant from New York. The intresting thing is that Henery Ford intended this plant to power Greenfield Village. Unfortunatly it was 1943 when this was built, and he wasn't able to get any copper wires due to the needs of the war effort. As a result Greenfield Village has a fully equiped DC power station that was never put into operation.

Coal loads head east to Sherco in Becker after waiting for clearance in Sartell. Seems like they've been adding more DC power to these trains as of late.

Wightwick Manor is a Victorian era house built to resemble an Elizabethan style manor house but equipped with all of the mod cons of the late 19th century, including electricity (DC powered by an on-site generator), indoor plumbing, central heating and even a venting/cooling system.

Taking inspiration from a lecture on 'the House Beautiful' by Oscar Wilde, the first owner's son, Theodore, and his wife Flora decorated its interiors with the designs of William Morris and his Arts and Crafts contemporaries. The house portrays life during the Victorian era with original Morris wallpapers and fabrics, De Morgan tiles, Kempe glass, and many Pre-Raphaelite works of art. It is one of only a few surviving examples of a house built and furnished under the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Wightwick was built in two phases; the first was completed in 1887 and the house was extended in 1893 just to provide accommodation for the family's guests.

The house was first offered to the National Trust in 1936, but it was turned down because the house was only 50 years old! The following year the owners sweetened the pot by offering an endowment to maintain the house and the NT accepted. The offer included a proviso that the family could continue to occupy part of the house (which they did until 1986) while the rest was open to the public.

Hard to believe that the SD60/75 era on alot of class 1's is coming to an end in 2016. Slow economy is really killing off the older power.

Back in 2007 DC powered coal trains still roamed the northern coal route thru Glendive/Mandan. Here a couple ex-Santa Fe SD75's and an ex-Soo Line leaser SD60 power this empty coal train back for loading at Decker Mine. The train is seen here passing the elevator at Cleveland, about 20 miles west of Jamestown.

CNW 8717, now known as Union Pacific 9821, was notable for having Operation Lifesaver lettering; their AC4400CW fleet also had the lettering, but not many DC-powered locomotives wore those graphics.

I've been posting quite a bit of stuff from the '80's and '90's as I was most active as a railfan then. After the death of Kodachrome (plus other issues I wont go into here), I did not return to railfanning with a DSLR until 2014.

The early 1990's were a great time to be railfanning, as you still had BN, ATSF, SP, and CR for one, plus a good percentage of the trains were still led by DC power with standard cabs. This BN train heading west towards Denver with an A-B-B-A set of toasters by the Hastings NE depot is typical of what we would see almost everyday back then and what I miss the most. 1-19-1992

A Westbound BNSF coal empty crosses the Soo Line trail at McGregor, MN on a May evening in 2006. McGregor used to be the crossing of the Soo Line and the NP/BN until the Soo abandoned their own Bemidji line in 1985. In the old days the two story depot would have behind the power where the McGregor radio tower sits in this view Soo Line trail. Never got to see two railroads in McGregor by the time I lived their for a few years in the mid-2000s, but got to see plenty of DC powered coal trains as 3-4 each way rolled through town each day.

Screaming at Notch 8 the solo GEVO leads its mixed freight up and around the S curve at Milbase as light flurries begin to fill the sky.

Trying to make the most of the days snow before Christmas I spent the afternoon between Milbase and Mile 30, and my god was this ever a GEVO packed day.. I think I wished this onto my self which makes it all the more worse. Exam season had me bored and checking old shots, which is what lead to the realization that I really haven't shot T4 GEVOs, mainly getting tier 2 and 3 GEVOs or the much nicer DC power (yes that incudes the CN ES44DC's, sucker for teardrops). It was because of this lack tier 4s I had seen I began to think "you know what shooting a tier 4 wouldn't be too bad, you haven't seen them so why not diversify". Well I guess the gods [power planners] heard this and slapped either a 3000 or 3200 series thing on the entire afternoons lineup. So much for being open minded to new power.. officially back on GEVO boredom now.

Besides my return to reality, this afternoon was filled with on and off snow, a much needed break from school and my hopes of a white Christmas in the GTA finally coming back. So lets hope your stockings aren't full of boring power like mine and happy holidays to everyone!

In the eighties, the construction of the power transmission line-750 kV became widespread. On the agenda was the development of new, previously non-existent in the world voltage classes -1150 kV AC and 1500 kV DC, called ultra-high.

The construction of ultra-high-voltage transmission lines opened up exciting prospects - the ability to quickly, with minimal losses, transfer electricity and power for thousands of kilometers from energy-surplus regions of the country to energy-deficient ones.

The world's first "latitudinal" transmission lines were to link together the five unified power systems of the Soviet Union-Siberia, Kazakhstan, the Urals, the Volga, and the Center. The power transmission line Siberia-Kazakhstan-Ural was built and put into operation in stages

On March 24, 1977, the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted Resolution No. 243 "On the establishment of the Ekibastuz Fuel and Energy Complex and the construction of a 1500 kV DC power transmission line Ekibastuz-Center". This resolution provided for more efficient development of the fuel and energy complex, implementation of the energy program of the USSR, where Kazakhstan was provided for in the coming years one of the key roles in the Soviet energy sector. At that time, Kazakhstan ranked third among the republics of the USSR in terms of electricity production.

Given the myriad coal reserves and the scale of its production, it was decided to build large thermal power plants in Ekibastuz in the immediate vicinity of the mines, in order to minimize the cost of coal transportation. With the commissioning of power units at the GRES under construction, Kazakhstan not only fully provided electricity to the national economy of the republic, but also had the opportunity to transfer electricity to other regions of the former Soviet Union.

So in 1987, the section of this line from Ekibastuz to Chebarkul with a length of 432 kilometers was commissioned at a voltage level of 1150 kV. No other line in the world is capable of operating at such a high voltage. The site was supposed to deliver power from the two Ekibastuz GRES built to the 1150 kV substation in Chebarkul. Dispatch name: Kostanay-Chelyabinsk. The capacity of the line reached 5500 MW.

Laid from Ekibastuz through Kokchetayev and Kustanai up to Chelyabinsk, the power line-1150 connected the power systems of Kazakhstan and Russia. The average height of the line supports is 45 meters. The weight of the conductors is approximately 50 tons.

The unique high-voltage power transmission line "Siberia-Center" with a design voltage of 1150 kV cost the country 1.3 trillion rubles. rubles'. At the same time, the construction of a 1500 kV DC power transmission line Ekibastuz – Center was underway.

On the territory of Kazakhstan, the 1150 kV Ekibastuz-Kokchetav-Kustanai transmission line operated at a nominal voltage of 1150 kV from 1988 to 1991.

The completion of the "latitudinal" transmission lines of 1150 and 1500 kV was planned in 1995, but due to the collapse of the USSR, the project remained unfinished. Most of the line was "abroad", as approximately 1400 of the 1,900 km of the line "Barnaul-Ekibastuz-Kokchetav-Kustanai-Chelyabinsk" is located in Kazakhstan.

Wightwick Manor (pronounced 'Wittick') is a Victorian era house built to resemble an Elizabethan style manor house but equipped with all of the mod cons of the late 19th century, including electricity (DC powered by an on-site generator), indoor plumbing, central heating and even a venting/cooling system.

This window seat provided a vantage point from which to see visitors approaching the front door.

UP train CROHS with DC power begins the climb up Logan Hill while a BN train with SD70MACs waits for a crew on the Converse Mine lead. 9-7-1995

A friendly wave from the conductor flies from one of a handful of CNW Dash 9 patches remaining. 9741 is the lone engine a coal empty westbound on the Blair Sub. Check out some of the interesting touches on this veteran; hand painted numberboards, and visors over the headlights... appears someone stole a headlight casting from an EMD and mounted it upside down.

It is unusual to see DC power on Union Pacific coal trains, much less General Electric DC power, and even much less CNW patches!
