Screaming at Notch 8 the solo GEVO leads its mixed freight up and around the S curve at Milbase as light flurries begin to fill the sky.
Trying to make the most of the days snow before Christmas I spent the afternoon between Milbase and Mile 30, and my god was this ever a GEVO packed day.. I think I wished this onto my self which makes it all the more worse. Exam season had me bored and checking old shots, which is what lead to the realization that I really haven't shot T4 GEVOs, mainly getting tier 2 and 3 GEVOs or the much nicer DC power (yes that incudes the CN ES44DC's, sucker for teardrops). It was because of this lack tier 4s I had seen I began to think "you know what shooting a tier 4 wouldn't be too bad, you haven't seen them so why not diversify". Well I guess the gods [power planners] heard this and slapped either a 3000 or 3200 series thing on the entire afternoons lineup. So much for being open minded to new power.. officially back on GEVO boredom now.
Besides my return to reality, this afternoon was filled with on and off snow, a much needed break from school and my hopes of a white Christmas in the GTA finally coming back. So lets hope your stockings aren't full of boring power like mine and happy holidays to everyone!

In the eighties, the construction of the power transmission line-750 kV became widespread. On the agenda was the development of new, previously non-existent in the world voltage classes -1150 kV AC and 1500 kV DC, called ultra-high.
The construction of ultra-high-voltage transmission lines opened up exciting prospects - the ability to quickly, with minimal losses, transfer electricity and power for thousands of kilometers from energy-surplus regions of the country to energy-deficient ones.
The world's first "latitudinal" transmission lines were to link together the five unified power systems of the Soviet Union-Siberia, Kazakhstan, the Urals, the Volga, and the Center. The power transmission line Siberia-Kazakhstan-Ural was built and put into operation in stages
On March 24, 1977, the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR adopted Resolution No. 243 "On the establishment of the Ekibastuz Fuel and Energy Complex and the construction of a 1500 kV DC power transmission line Ekibastuz-Center". This resolution provided for more efficient development of the fuel and energy complex, implementation of the energy program of the USSR, where Kazakhstan was provided for in the coming years one of the key roles in the Soviet energy sector. At that time, Kazakhstan ranked third among the republics of the USSR in terms of electricity production.
Given the myriad coal reserves and the scale of its production, it was decided to build large thermal power plants in Ekibastuz in the immediate vicinity of the mines, in order to minimize the cost of coal transportation. With the commissioning of power units at the GRES under construction, Kazakhstan not only fully provided electricity to the national economy of the republic, but also had the opportunity to transfer electricity to other regions of the former Soviet Union.
So in 1987, the section of this line from Ekibastuz to Chebarkul with a length of 432 kilometers was commissioned at a voltage level of 1150 kV. No other line in the world is capable of operating at such a high voltage. The site was supposed to deliver power from the two Ekibastuz GRES built to the 1150 kV substation in Chebarkul. Dispatch name: Kostanay-Chelyabinsk. The capacity of the line reached 5500 MW.
Laid from Ekibastuz through Kokchetayev and Kustanai up to Chelyabinsk, the power line-1150 connected the power systems of Kazakhstan and Russia. The average height of the line supports is 45 meters. The weight of the conductors is approximately 50 tons.
The unique high-voltage power transmission line "Siberia-Center" with a design voltage of 1150 kV cost the country 1.3 trillion rubles. rubles'. At the same time, the construction of a 1500 kV DC power transmission line Ekibastuz – Center was underway.
On the territory of Kazakhstan, the 1150 kV Ekibastuz-Kokchetav-Kustanai transmission line operated at a nominal voltage of 1150 kV from 1988 to 1991.
The completion of the "latitudinal" transmission lines of 1150 and 1500 kV was planned in 1995, but due to the collapse of the USSR, the project remained unfinished. Most of the line was "abroad", as approximately 1400 of the 1,900 km of the line "Barnaul-Ekibastuz-Kokchetav-Kustanai-Chelyabinsk" is located in Kazakhstan.
Wightwick Manor (pronounced 'Wittick') is a Victorian era house built to resemble an Elizabethan style manor house but equipped with all of the mod cons of the late 19th century, including electricity (DC powered by an on-site generator), indoor plumbing, central heating and even a venting/cooling system.
Taking inspiration from a lecture on 'the House Beautiful' by Oscar Wilde, the first owner's son, Theodore, and his wife Flora decorated its interiors with the designs of William Morris and his Arts and Crafts contemporaries. The house portrays life during the Victorian era with original Morris wallpapers and fabrics, De Morgan tiles, Kempe glass, and many Pre-Raphaelite works of art. It is one of only a few surviving examples of a house built and furnished under the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Wightwick was built in two phases; the first was completed in 1887 and the house was extended in 1893 just to provide accommodation for the family's guests.
The house was first offered to the National Trust in 1936, but it was turned down because the house was only 50 years old! The following year the owners sweetened the pot by offering an endowment to maintain the house and the NT accepted. The offer included a proviso that the family could continue to occupy part of the house (which they did until 1986) while the rest was open to the public.
This window seat provided a vantage point from which to see visitors approaching the front door.

UP train CROHS with DC power begins the climb up Logan Hill while a BN train with SD70MACs waits for a crew on the Converse Mine lead. 9-7-1995
A friendly wave from the conductor flies from one of a handful of CNW Dash 9 patches remaining. 9741 is the lone engine a coal empty westbound on the Blair Sub. Check out some of the interesting touches on this veteran; hand painted numberboards, and visors over the headlights... appears someone stole a headlight casting from an EMD and mounted it upside down.
It is unusual to see DC power on Union Pacific coal trains, much less General Electric DC power, and even much less CNW patches!

Slovenske Železnice (Slovenian Railways, SŽ) electric 342-006 (also displaying the UIC number 91 79 1 342 006-6) stands on track 1 at Maribor, at the head of an international train bound for Austria (and possibly beyond).
On track 2 is the stock for the penultimate day of the PTG Tours "Slovenian Spanka" six-day charter, which would first head west via the valley of the River Mura (Mur in German) to Bleiburg in Austria, while on track 3 can just be seen one of SŽ's three "Pendolino" tilting EMUs; these are three-car units, with the driving cars class 310 and the centre cars 316. On the extreme left are some 1960s-built class 311 / 315 EMUs of the same design as the Polish EN57.
The Jugoslavian class 342 Bo-Bo electrics were built by Ansaldo in Italy between 1968 and 1970. Forty were built and, operating from a 3kV dc power supply, all ended up with SŽ when Jugoslavia was split. Many have now been withdrawn from service, although some were sold to FER and FNM in Italy, where they saw further use as class E.640. Because they only had four axles (when most other electric had six), railway staff gave them the nickname "moped".
As can be seen, today started bright and sunny, a big contrast from the previous day which had been overcast and with some heavy rain. But it didn't last, and clouds rolled in later - although there wasn't any rain.
I hadn't uploaded this previously, because I didn't think the positioning of the train was particularly good - there was a shadow of an OHL mast on the loco bodyside, only a short way along, and only the loco and less than half the first coach was forward of the shadow of the platform canopy. But I've not got any other photos of SŽ 342s.

MÁV-HÉV Helyiérdekű Vasút Zrt.: Disconnected from each other and isolated from the rest of the railway network, four suburban railway lines (one of them with a branch) form the system of the Budapest Railways of Local Interest (Budapesti Helyiérdekű Vasút, BHÉV), which has a total length of 97 km. They all have the same characteristics: standard track gauge and 1,100 V DC power supply. The lines are commercially designated H5 to H9. Since November 2016, this company has been a subsidiary of the Hungarian state railways MÁV.
The service is basically carried out with 91 three-car EMUs of the MX series (motor cars numbers 861 to 892) and MXA (motor cars numbers 901 to 1000 and 1101 to 1150), build in the former German Democratic Republic by LEW "Hans Beimler" Hennigsdorf between 1971 and 1983. Seven EMUs of the MIX/A series (motor cars) and PXXV/A (trailer cars) also remain in service, runnig only on line H7. They come from the modernization of as many of the 27 trains that were built by BHÉV itself in its Budafoki workshops between 1963 and 1966.
Two MXA series EMUs leaving the terminal station at the Örs vezér tere transport hub, working a service on line H9 to Csömör. Of the entire BHÉV network, lines H8 and H9 are the only ones on which trains run on the left hand side.
Some years ago, I was hired to help install new power supplies in cellular phone towers throughout this state. During one installation, a fellow I was working with from the phone company accidentally dropped a small ratchet wrench down the rack that supported the equipment... lodging itself between ground and one of the power posts on the - (yes, that's minus) 400 volts DC power supply, the wrench instantly transformed into a filament, which bathed that tiny room with blindingly brilliant light. After scrambling to disconnect the power supply and waiting for it to cool, we removed the slag of metal that had once been a wrench. I noticed that the word "Craftsman" was still mostly readable on what was left of the tool. I told my friend that I'd love to see the looks he'd get when he brought the wrench back to Sears for the "no questions asked lifetime warranty". It's amazing to see what that kind of power can do in mere seconds.
Like many of you, I mostly cruise through life when, all of a sudden, life becomes instantly more interesting... and I can't begin to tell you how often that's happened. Unlike many I know, I've never lost the sense of wonder I had as a kid... just ask anyone who knows me. I am absolutely fascinated by those fleeting moments where all you can do is just stand back and say "Wow!"... even when it has you running for cover.
Some of the best sunsets I've ever seen were in the rear view mirror as I was leaving either the coast or the mountains here in North Carolina. We have a saying here in the "land of the long leaf pine", however: even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then. Here, at the Wolf Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Milepost 424), my "sense of wonder" had me firmly ensconced on the rock wall, waiting for the now and the not yet. While this isn't the all-encompassing big sky sunset that we all gun for, it was still a Wow! moment for me. This had been a particularly good day with the camera, but these low clouds gathered toward evening, just about assuring an awful sunset. I had this beautiful place all to myself, and sunset or not, I was going to wait it out. Suddenly, the sunlight broke through, and the ordinary entwined itself with the extraordinary. As are many good experiences, this was quite ephemeral, yet there's no doubt that God provided an exclamation point on my day... I just sat back and enjoyed it... in wonder! Well, that, and I was feeling sorry for whoever in that pass who didn't own a pair of sunglasses.
“We are perishing for lack of wonder, not for lack of wonders.” In this world that becomes increasingly unrecognizable to me in terms of the way people treat and regard each other, this quote from G. K. Chesterton seems quite pertinent. Nothing seems sacred in this era of information overload for many now as they put their faith squarely in one sort of idealism or another. That's not for me. I hope you, too, find a way to connect with that sense of wonder... and act on it, especially in the coming holy season.

BNSF 8295 leads the H-LAUAMA through Colorado Springs, CO on a beautiful fall morning.
This is a hark back shot to my days in North Dakota. With DC-powered EMDs fronting coal trains across the northern plains and miles and miles of straight, flat track, one wasn't left with much to shoot other than telemashes. I cut my teeth on the telemash when I got into this hobby, so I often find myself going back to what I'm most familiar and comfortable with.
By 2010, the SD75s were starting to show their wear. The red and silver of the classic Warbonnet scheme was starting to fade, but this particular unit's paint had held up quite well. As of this posting (18 May 16), this is the last photo I ever took of a SD75I, and, sadly, it might end up staying that way...
