Well pull up a chair - I'm going to ramble on for the second day in a row.
So following a brief theme on hats, I present to you one of my six or so King Ropes hats. Why King Ropes? You know that meme going around about "Tell me you're X, without telling me you're X? So this is "Tell me you're from Wyoming, without telling me you're from Wyoming."
Now - immediately - I'm not FROM Wyoming. But about a month before I turned 18, I suddenly, and a little surprisingly, found myself transported from my ancestral birthplace of Pittsburgh, PA, to Casper, Wyoming. And two months later I was starting college in Laramie. I am not what you might call a planner on the big things in life - more often a seat-of-the-pants person. So without a serious college plan at the time, I decided to give the University of Wyoming a one-year trial. One year turned into ten years, mostly because Wyoming and the University really grew on me. I met me wife at UW, and THAT is what got me started on understanding what King Ropes was.
My wife grew up in Sheridan, WY, about 20 miles south of the Montana border, and on the eastern edge of the Big Horn Mountains. And while visiting here I leaned about the legend of King Ropes - which is based in Sheridan. When my folks moved from Casper to Sheridan, in 1996, where they still are today, King's only became more engrained.
So if you're thinking I've seen those hats before, but not just on Dave - well - they became quite trendy - working their way into a movie or two, and on to the heads of some people more famous than I. And they caught fire. To tell the truth, the name of the shop is NOT King Ropes - it's King's Saddlery. The rope business is just a side hustle. King's makes - obviously - saddles - but also the aforementioned ropes as well as bridles, bits, headstalls, reins, halters, roping equipment, barrel racing equipment, saddle bags, saddle blankets and slickers. You may not even know what half of those things are - but they're taken pretty seriously in ranching and rodeo circles.
So the King Ropes hats became my inside Wyoming nod - that I was more Wyoming than this Pittsburgh boy may have led on (and yes - I can ride a horse - but ironically I learned to ride an English saddle and jump - not a Western saddle. If you need me to post a trot or do a little cantering - well - A horse. A horse, my kingdom for a horse!).
Anyway, my collection of hats grows - and pretty much every time I'm in Sheridan, I stop down on Main Street, and pay a visit. And if you wanna be trendy like me - head over to www.swingaking.com/ and buy your own damn hat. Mine are all taken.

Some scans of recently discovered old 6 x 4 prints taken by myself back in the 1980s and 1990s. These were taken with my trusted Canon AE1 camera and at the time I didn’t think some of them were good enough to use however, I thought some might find them interesting and that I would now share them.
