The first of my twelve day break from work and I felt a need to go out. My wife kindly woke me and said dawn looked promising. She stayed at home, with our Granddaughters, while I went out to play. The sky didn't colour up much and this was the best I could do. The weather hasn't been kind on my days off, just lately.

Actually a pre-dawn shot from the beach at the Gibson Steps in Victoria, Australia. In the centre is one of the Twelve Apostles - either Gog or Magog.

On the left of the sea stack is the Milky Way rising. The southern cross is visible to the left of the Coalsack. Directly above the sea stack is the Large Magellanic Cloud and to the right is Canopus, the second brightest star in the sky. The Small Magellanic Cloud is visible between the sea stack and Canopus.

Nothing like dawn at the beach. Good day Sunshine ~

2024 Eades Meadow - A Worcestershire Wildlife Trust nature reserve. The 'Dancing Oak' obviously relished the dawn sunlight.

Spring has arrived! Even on a chilly morning, the early morning sun warms the daffodils and my heart. The hole in front of the rock is likely from one of the neighborhood armadillos.

I drove past this scene early morning on my way to a friend. I drove on, but decided to return and take this shot. Glad I did!

The first rays of dawn on the beach at Southern Shores. Rather chilly this morning. This is a time exposure which makes the Atlantic look a bit calmer than it usually is. Ya'll have a large weekend and thank you for the visit.

Dawn clouds reflected in the surface of a wetland pond, Pacific Flyway, New Year’s Day 2022.

The dawn light is remarkably fleeting. The space between “too early” and “too late” can be extremely small, and on a morning like this one I might have only moments to see what is happening in the sky, find a foreground, create a composition, and make some photographs. When the light arrived and a small group of clouds appeared in the distance, I first worked handheld with a long lens in order to narrow the view and get some flexibility about positioning the tree. Then I grabbed another camera that had a wider angle lens attached, and I made a few photographs that included more sky and water than seen here.

I have photographed in some remarkable landscape, where particular objects demanded attention. But this landscape along the Pacific Flyway is not that sort of place. To be honest, often it can seem plain and even boring. Much of the area is agricultural country, and nearby there are large cattle operations — not the most scenic or pleasant of landscape subjects. But for a few months each winter the fields flood and migratory birds return, and when the conditions are just right magic may happen.

I still got many photos from the trip to USA... so...here's another one, from the great park of Canyonlands, Utah, at dawn.

A very early morning shoot to get the sunrise behind St May's lighthouse, a local landmark. Here is one my first photos about 45 minutes before sunrise. This causeway is total submerged at high tide making the lighthouse an island. As beautiful as it is there is only some much orange dawn sky you can take, so again I have decided on black and white. May be one day I will post the colour version.

I got out of my car early enough to see the entire sky filled with high level streaking clouds and stars peeking through well before the sun started to rise. The whole hike into the foothills the color just started building in this spectacular way...a strange but amazing atmosphere that slowly creeps in indicating you've made a great decision. It wasn't until a little under an hour before sunrise I was able to capture this scene luckily with a few stars remaining. Unfortunately there was an approaching storm that moved too fast and cut the light right before things really exploded :(

I have another version of this, there is actually a field of dense purple Triplet Lilies below this frame.

I've been away in western Canada which is why I have been quiet on Flickr for a couple of weeks. So to start things off here are two Raccoons taken on the shore just after sunrise at Port McNeill on Vancouver Island. I saw lots of Raccoons on this trip, but nearly always at first light. I watched one Raccoon family disappear into a drainage pipe soon after dawn so I suspect this is where they spent most of their daylight hours. Raccoons (Procyon lotor) were once thought to be related to bears but they are an early offshoot of the dog family. They are only found naturally in the New World and the family includes Coatis and Kinkajous. The generic name Procyon means "before the dog" indicating that distant relationship. But the specific name lotor means washer because of their habit of appearing to wash their hands in water. These two had been foraging independently on the shoreline and when they came together there was some apparent aggression. Here the left Raccoon has her ears down and is snarling. But after a few minutes of foreplay they were mating
