Rainbow over Godafoss (Falls of the Gods) soon after dawn on very brisk September morning.

So how did it get this name? In the year 999 or 1000 the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. According to a modern myth, it is said that upon returning from the Alþingi, Þorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. The story of Þorgeir's role in the adoption of Christianity in Iceland is preserved in Ari Þorgilsson's Íslendingabók. "Íslendingabók", however, makes no mention of Þorgeir throwing his idols into Goðafoss. A window in Akureyrarkirkja, the Cathedral of Akureyri, illustrates this story.

Now at long last dawn has come,

and the night is overthrown.

The clouds run from the rising light,

as dark skies scatter before the morning's calm.

This brightness is my true delight,

and my happiness rests upon it.

The glorious dawn was greeted by the rapturous choir of birdsong, hundreds of avian voices filling the morning air.

it's a better option than the phone photo I think

I'm not sure if the "ying ying" rhythm of a class 66 engine counts in the dawn chorus but 66743 slowly makes its way with the 6S45 0715 North Blyth Alcan Gbrf to Fort William Alcan Gbrf away from North Blyth terminal to start its approximately 12 hour journey to Fort William. 16-01-25.

Dawn off the coast of Kaikoura and one of the first places in the world to see today's sunrise.

That odd period when its not quite dark or light.

Predawn and how long it lasts.

The duration of the morning twilight (i.e. between astronomical dawn and sunrise) varies greatly depending on the observer's latitude: from a little over 70 minutes at the Equator, to many hours in the polar regions.

Dawn at the 40 Foot in Dublin. There were some pink tones in the sky for about 30 seconds!

Dawn on the Holloway Reservoir brought colors from the crayola "box of 8" on this cold February morning, 2024.

Thank you very much for the visit, faves and comments. Cheers.

Beautiful dawn at the Aegerital

While a large number of people were attending Dawn Services for ANZAC Day, I decided to fall out of bed and take a photo of the wonderful conjunction of planets in the dawn sky.

So from the top centre is the Moon, slightly below and to it's left is Saturn, then coming down is Mars, Venus then Jupiter at the bottom.

I was only just in time and the dawn and Melbourne lights mean this may not be the best photo but I was pleased to get it.

The conjunction will be best viewed on 1 May according to some. With Melbourne's cloudy weather it is best to get in early.

A colourful Red dawn this morning.

With more fog forecast I was up early and up onto Winnats Pass yesterday morning ready for the sunrise. Walking over the fields towards the pass I could see the dawn colours already building up in the sky and with a full blown inversion in the valley I was buzzing with the promise of what was to come. Reaching the top I was met with a glorious sight, stunning pre dawn colours which were being reflected over the surface of the mist so I couldn’t believe my luck. This was taken from the top end of Winnats which gives you some lovey layering as you look down over the Hope Valley.(Olympus EM-1 Mkii 12-100mm f/4 1 sec f/6.3 @ 21mm Kase Wolverine GND-R 1.2 (4 stop) reverse grad)

more from the dawn series at Hillarys Marina. Its all about the light and reflection. The water was so calm that the reflections were very striking. This is an image of the barge that is setting the mooring posts and boardwalks in the marina.

For National Moth Week, here's a lovely sphinx moth in Montana, photographed at around 5:30 a.m. with the dawn sky behind it. It's Smerinthus sp., I think S. astarte but maybe S. ophthalmica or S. cerisyi. Some sphinx moths drink nectar, but these have reduced mouthparts and adults do not feed. I think it was worth waking up early.

East Coast of Florida

A 35mm slide image, originally shared almost a decade ago, that has brushed up nicely courtesy of the improved digital darkroom skills (and software packages) I've managed to pick up over the last few years.

In this shot an Eastern Region Rail Rover and an overnight train from London Kings Cross provided for a dawn arrival in Newcastle Central, where first light catches a class 03 shunter at the eastern end of the station ready for the day's action. The Keep, a must-do destination for rail snappers visiting Newcastle back then, stands imposingly in the background.

As ever, exposure was a bit finger in the air with the Zodel F Lightmeter (a 60's vintage hand-me-down from my Dad), but two or three bracketed shots for safety managed to yield a result.

I had a couple of these ERRR's over the years and they provided superb rail photography opportunities for this East Midlander who had rarely ventured further east than Grantham.

This version should go to full-screen quite well. The original has been deleted.
