Daft, 2002 - 2017, is painted on a 1/4" mdf panel mounted on a wooden frame.

The central image in Daft is executed over an early experiment with self leveling materials. The darker monochromatic under painting creates an organic armature for the brighter center form as it's colors gently vibrate. I recommend holding the painting at a comfortable length and looking at it like an album cover.

I think of Daft as off kilter, madcap, outside the normal, delightfully unexpected but not dangerous. Daft seemed to fit my response to this painting.

The result of a few small blocks of free time in the middle of my Shenzhen trip. Not much else to do while waiting for meetings and factory feedback but to play around with Solidworks.

Tonight's faff with the beauty dish, Daft Punk helmet and lightsaber. I set the beauty dish to the side of where I was going to kneel and focused the camera. Then lights off, helmet on and lightsaber in hand. I set the camera off, triggered the beauty dish, switched the lightsaber on, gave it a quick wiggle and closed the shutter with my remote.

My completed daft punk (guy) helmet. Complete with flip up face shield and sequencer controlled light system.

I've received some questions about the changes I made to the design...

1) Tilt: Man.. is it nice to be able to tilt this thing up and have peripheral vision back. I wore this for 7 hours at wonder con and believe me the tilt feature was NECESSARY. I'm a huge function over form guy.

2) Scrollers: I wanted to keep the message aspect of the helmets front LED system and also be able to see out of the thing…. And I love LED belt buckles

3) Light System Brightness: The Sequencer is built for battery life, so the light level is keep down. I could have removed the voltage regulator and ran it of 9v instead of 6v (I thought about doing this) but I have only seen Daft Punk's helmets lit up in dark environments... so whats the point? Costumes are meant for parties - they tend to be at night... I'd rather last 10hrs at a party than 3hrs in the day. And besides... It doesn't look BAD with the lights off.

4) I just don't see the point in trying to exactly match the original. There is no way, that I can see, to truly be able to recreate the helmet 100% to match Daft Punk's. I don't have a LED front screen so I can see out the helmet, I don't have a green pulsing "ear" light system, I don't have a large electronic backpack, I don't run on external power, and no one famous has worn the damn thing. The changes I made to the design were both done for ease of use but also to incorporate features I wanted in the helmet - The tilt, scrollers, the squared off back "bar" (mix of the "wire" and anime versions), the in helmet power and controls were all things I personally felt improved the helmet.

I couldn't think of a better way to end the year and the project with Daft Punk. Someday I would love to get them in front of my camera in RL but the toys are a good substitute:)

Hi everyone,

When I heard that daft punk were breaking up, it made me sad and I wanted to listen to their albums again (it's not the kind of music I normally listen to) and what a source of inspiration and creativity!

MOC 100% built to the sound of Daft Punk.

A friend of mine convinced me to check out Daft Punk at The Arrow Hall in Mississauga on Sunday August 5th, 2007.
