Hey, I got a bunch of people asking me what a shank cutter was after my last blog post, so I snapped a pic of mine to show you.

They look and work pretty much like wire cutters, but they're awesome for cutting through plastic. They're intended for snipping the backs off shank buttons, and slice right through anything, even super hard plastic. They're awesome, I use them all the time.

I bought mine online, but I'm sure you can get them at Joanns, Hobby Lobby, etc. In store they'd probably be near the tools, or the buttons, maybe? I've seen them called shank cutters or shank removers, depending on where you get them, and they cost about 5 bucks.

Hope that helps clear things up!

The Tudor Pull is a ceremonial event for Thames Watermen's Cutters which is organised each year by the Thames Traditional Rowing Association (TTRA).The cutters escort the Thames Royal Shallop 'Jubilant' rowed by members of the Company of Watermen and Lightermen, from Hampton Court Palace to the Tower of London to deliver a 'Stela' to the Governor of the Tower for safekeeping.

The 'Stela' is a piece of medieval water pipe made from a hollowed tree trunk which stands on a base of timber from the old Richmond Lock and which bears the coat of arms of the Waterman's Company.

The 'Stela' is handed over to the custody of her Majesty's Bargemasters at King Henry's Royal Palace at Hampton Court to be carried by river to the Tower of London accompanied by His Gracious Majesty King Henry VIII and his Queen in the vanguard of the Royal Procession on board the Royal Shallop 'Jubilant'.

The cutters are rigged with full ceremonial canopies and flags and rowed with four oars by fully-liveried crews. In keeping with the traditions of the Watermen's Cutters, passengers are carried.

Two pair of key cutters for grooving the specific form into the thumb and finger sides of a blank. Solid carbide--we get them in as cast blanks and others at the shop grind the thickness, inner diameter and flute the cutting faces. After they are mounted on a grinding arbor I rough the form in outer diameter and then grind the forms on each of the 12 teeth using industrial grade diamond wheels. The EDM machine burns the half-moon keyway in the i.d. and then I step down the side reliefs and etch the tool number. That's it--took me about 13 hours to do my portions. Now they get shipped out and they will probably cut about 200,000 brass key blanks. Go buy yourself new locks for your home--some things still need to be made in America.
