Late night eating was not on my agenda, these gents (all lined up) working front of house in Piazza Navona in Rome were wasting time whilst waiting for customers. I liked the line up, the DOF with competition really appeals with star of the show in focus.

With the disappointing news recently that Rousselot will be closing their Peabody plant by the end of 2023 I decided I better make the effort to photograph CSXT's ex Pan Am local BO-1 (technically I guess L055 now) making the trip up the Eastern Route to Salem and the freight only Danvers and South Reading Industrial Tracks to access the plant.

The closure of this plant will bring to the end all freight operations north of Everett Junction on the Eastern Route unless any new customers materialize along the commuter zone. With rail operations to end around June, well before the plant finally shuts down, now is the time to get out.

Having made the 17 mile run up from BET in Somerville via the Eastern Route mainline they then gingerly picked their way west (timetable east) at 5 MPH out the nearly 2.5 mile long branch to the plant. Here they are working in tandem with plant personnel using their car mover to pull seven empties and spot seven loads in this view seen from the Allens Lane crossing.

Holding down the job is CSXT's ex Pan Am GMDD GP40-2W MEC 507 (blt. Jul 1974 as CN 9472) which was given this mysterious retro fresh Guilford gray paint job at Waterville in August 2020 and has been frequently assigned to BO-1 since then.

Rousselot is the worldwide leader in gelatin production and has a dozen other plants around the world. This particular facility was owned by Eastman Kodak until 2012, although manufacturing has taken place on this site since 1812 when a glue factory opened here.

Kodak used the plant primarily for making a very pure gelatin used in photographic film, but the market for that has dwindled with the emergence of digital cameras. As recently as 2007, 95 percent of the gelatin it produced went toward film, but by 2011 that had been reduced to a 50-50 split between gelatin for film and for other products. During the last 10 years, the facility's production has also decreased dramatically, going from about 19 million pounds of gel in 1999 to 2.75 million pounds at the time the plant was sold.

However the shift from film pharmaceutical products had led to increased production in recent years and more inbound raw materials (bone chips and acid) arriving by rail so the recent news really came as a shock to many.

If you've not seen it, here is one of several news articles on the closing of the plant which has been in operation in some form for over 200 years! <www.salemnews.com/news/peabody-rousselot-plant-to-close-a...

A record shot in poor conditions of the new TPE Nova 3 MK5 train set with class 68 020 "Reliance" propelling through Parkside Curve with 3H12 Carlisle - Manchester International Depot test run. The train does indeed look stunning and will provide a huge step change for comfort, speed and on board facilities. Aug 29th 2018. Pole shot.

Five years on and these sets are now stood down by TPE from Dec 2023. Another project that they couldn't manage to get right sadly. The lease company will now be looking for a new customer and I think that may be a difficult task in a world of Bi Mode traction. The locomotives may well end up at DRS as their ageing fleet of 37/57's will be rundown in the next year. The MKV stock is an another matter with only Chiltern and TFW currently running loco hauled stock services. As it turned out all the complete sets would be going to Chiltern by 2026.

Crack customers were just the most amazingly paranoid entertainment I could come up with on nice Saturday afternoon!!!

On the south side of UPs Belt Yard, there is a short branch line that has a few customers here and there along the Mississippi River. I would see UP power sitting over here a lot, never working this area. While I was waiting for the Y-SPMP, I got some shots as they swapped out some cars.

I love the looks of sunken track and weeds in this scene.

The lens is from the mid 1950s and has seen better days. The lens coatings are mostly scratched off and when the lens is wide open, It gives very pleasant glow around highlights.

When taking photos of flowers, I really like this lens for the soft but chaotic bokeh.

Direct from the camera, contrast is not very good, but very easy to recover some contrast from RAW.
