Modern art galleries and museums have always wanted to tell a story in the usual fashion of linear history. So as a rule rooms in galleries tended to be set out in historical periods or particular styles. The contemporary curator however eschews all that, throws everything into the mix and allows the viewer to piece together their own story.
Now this is all very well for the informed art lover, but can be very confusing to those who have never studied art history. It's a sink or swim model, and the jury is still out on whether this approach is going to be successful.
This section of the QVMAG was recently renovated to allow for more works to be shown from the very large collection that Launceston has built up over 200 years (the settlement itself was founded in 1806). One problem for photographers is that the light intensity has been reduced to 40 lumens per square metre (for example a 60 watt light bulb provides 800 lumens per square metre). This is so the works are not damaged by excess light. But it does make getting good photographs of the works very difficult indeed. This photograph, for instance, appears much brighter than the lighting actually was.

Curated by Filter Photo, Furtive is a photography-based exhibition that explores the complexity of memory, both personal and collective. Through an examination of place, archive and the intersection of perception and knowing, artists Daniel Hojnacki, Karolis Usonis, and Krista Wortendyke ask us to reconsider what we think we know based on our past experiences, communal knowledge and memory.

a perfect way of summing up this year, 2020. Some parts good, some parts bad, horribly bad, kinda like my photostream!
So'ooo...for me, to get myself through 2021, I'm going to throw on some spandex for the mind and workout some more hardcore images.
I'm truly grateful to be able to participate within this group that exercises with such creative thought. Thank you all very much for all of your inspiration in the images that you create. Stay at peace, stay healthy.

Just off Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, between Point Addis and Anglesea is a spectacular, but hazardous, 5 km section of cliffed coast and energetic beaches. The cliffs are composed of weathered sandstone that continually slumps and, in places, falls onto the beaches. The three beaches face south-south-east and receive waves averaging 1.5 m which, beside producing wide, energetic surf, help to erode the base of the cliffs and bluffs. Access to these beaches is not recommended owing to rock falls. The first beach (Black Rocks Beach) extends 1 km from Point Addis to Black Rocks. It can be reached via a walking track from the Point Addis car park. It usually has a single bar, cut by permanent rips against each headland, and two central rips. The backing bluffs are fairly subdued, reaching only 30 m. Eumeralla Beach is 2.2 km long and backed by massive slumps in its 90 m high bluffs. The beach sand is coarser, resulting in a surf zone dominated by rips every 300 m. Demons Bluff, as the name suggests, is a sheer, 30 to 50 m high, eroding cliff, fronted by a narrow, 1.5 km long beach that is awash at high tide. Rock falls commonly cover parts of the beach, which can only be reached on foot along the base of the cliffs. The beach has a wide surf zone, dominated by rips every 300 m. The Anglesea sewer works back the beach. (sourced from Beachsafe)
This was taken on an overcast morning, the sun came out to illuminate the cliff faces just for a few very brief moments.

The Red Stone Forest (Hongshilin National Geopark) is located in Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, China. These red carbonate rocks are believed to be formed during Ordovician, the second period of the Paleozoic era, between the Cambrian and Silurian periods. The stone formations originated underwater, later rising above sea level following tectonic shifts. The natural elements and 450 million years of erosion gave them their striking wavy texture. The rocks are known to change hues with the weather and seasons, with a deep rusty red being their most distinctive, hence the park’s name, the “Red Stone Forest.”

It is about 75 km from Hobart. A 6km Grade 3 Walk from the visitor centre of Mount Field National Park in Tasmania covers the three waterfalls: Russells Falls, Horseshoe Falls and Lady Barron Falls. The loop walk contains information and education boards at various intervals about the flora and fauna of the region. From the information centre to Russell Falls, glow worms can be seen at night.
The Russell Falls, a tiered–cascade waterfall, is downstream from Horseshoe Falls on Russell Falls Creek. Its total height is 34 - 58 metres with 2 drops. It has an excellent flow of water during the winter / spring months. These falls were originally known as Browning Falls after the original discoverer around 1856, but by 1884 it became known as Russell Falls. It is a flat 10 minute walk from the Information Centre and is one of few waterfalls that can be reached with a wheelchair. Other viewing platforms alongside the waterfall and above the waterfall can also be accessed for people who are able to negotiate staircases.

The Bay of Fires is a bay on the northeastern coast of Tasmania in Australia, extending from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point.
The Bay of Fires (indigenous name: larapuna) is a bay on the north eastern coast of Tasmania, extending from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point. It is a 29 km long sweep of powder-white sand and crystal-clear seas, with a string of superb beaches, punctuated by lagoons and rocky headlands, backed by coastal heath and bush.
The bay was given its name in 1773 by Captain Tobias Furneaux in Adventure, who saw the fires of Aboriginal people on the beaches along the coast line. The Bay of Fires is characterized by white beaches, blue water and huge granite blocks that are coloured bright orange by lichens. Perhaps, Captain Tobias Furneaux named the bay after these fiery red rocks. The lichens responsible for the orange hue in the rocks of Bay of Fires belong to the family Hymeneliaceae.
The conservation area is divided into three sections, with Anson's Bay dividing the southern and northern ends. A scenic view of the bay can be glimpsed by driving along the coast to The Gardens.
This was taken at Cosy Corner, a small beach near Binalong Bay.

Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) is a jagged range of more than 70 knifelike peaks in eastern China’s Anhui province. The region's low-hanging clouds, distinctively shaped granite rocks and twisted pine trees have been subjects of numerous classical paintings and poems. Cable cars provide access to several peaks, and steep paved trails with thousands of stone steps snake past many of the range's famous viewpoints. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of China's major tourist destinations.

Peyto Lake (/ˈpiːtoʊ/ PEE-toh) is a glacier-fed lake in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake itself is easily accessible from the Icefields Parkway. It was named for Bill Peyto, an early trail guide and trapper in the Banff area.
The lake is formed in a valley of the Waputik Range, between Caldron Peak, Peyto Peak and Mount Jimmy Simpson, at an elevation of 1,860 m (6,100 ft).
During the summer, significant amounts of glacial rock flour flow into the lake from a nearby glacier, and these suspended rock particles are what give the lake a unique bright, turquoise colour. Because of its bright colour, photos of the lake often appear in illustrated books, and the area around the lake is a popular sightseeing spot for tourists. The lake is best seen from Bow Summit, the highest point on the Icefields Parkway.
The lake is fed by Peyto Creek, which drains water from Caldron Lake and Peyto Glacier (part of the Wapta Icefield). Peyto Lake is the origin of the Mistaya River, which heads northwest from the lake's outflow. (Wikipedia)

The Cape Barren goose is 75 to 100 cm (30 to 39 in) long, weighs 3 to 7 kg (6.6 to 15.4 lb) and has a 150 to 190 cm (59 to 75 in) wingspan; males are somewhat larger than females. This bird feeds by grazing and rarely swims.
This images is included in a gallery "
The species' common name is derived from Cape Barren Island, where specimens were first sighted by European explorers. It is known in the local Jardwadjali language as toolka.
These are bulky geese and their almost uniformly grey plumage, bearing rounded black spots, is unique. The tail and flight feathers are blackish and the legs are pink with black feet. The short, decurved black bill and green cere gives it a very peculiar expression.
The Cape Barren goose was first described by English ornithologist John Latham in 1801 under the current binomial name. It is a most peculiar goose of uncertain affiliations (Sraml et al. 1996). It may either belong in the "true geese" and swan subfamily Anserinae or in the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae as distinct tribe Cereopsini, or be separated, possibly including the prehistorically extinct flightless New Zealand geese of the genus Cnemiornis, in a distinct subfamily Cereopsinae. The first bones of the New Zealand birds to be discovered were similar enough to those of the Cape Barren goose to erroneously refer to them as "New Zealand Cape Barren goose" ("Cereopsis" novaezeelandiae).

The Grand Canyon (Hopi: Ongtupqa; Yavapai: Wi:kaʼi:la, Navajo: Tsékooh Hatsoh, Spanish: Gran Cañón) is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters). The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While some aspects about the history of incision of the canyon are debated by geologists, several recent studies support the hypothesis that the Colorado River established its course through the area about 5 to 6 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River has driven the down-cutting of the tributaries and retreat of the cliffs, simultaneously deepening and widening the canyon. (Wikipedia)

Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock and officially gazetted as Uluru / Ayers Rock, is a large sandstone rock formation. Uluru is just the exposed tip of a huge vertical body of rock. This rock probably extends far below the surrounding plain, probably for several km. It lies 335 km (208 mi) south west of the nearest large town, Alice Springs. It has been listed as Dual UNESCO heritage site.
Uluru means Meeting Place. It is sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the Aboriginal people of the area. The area around the formation is home to an abundance of springs, waterholes, rock caves and ancient paintings. Uluru and Kata Tjuta, also known as the Olgas, are the two major features of the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park. Uluru, the world's most famous monolith, is an evocative and powerful icon of the Australian landscape. Uluru appears in many guises and poses a unique photographic challenge.

The laughing kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae) is a bird in the kingfisher subfamily Halcyoninae. It is a large robust kingfisher with a whitish head and a dark eye-stripe. The upperparts are mostly dark brown but there is a mottled light-blue patch on the wing coverts. The underparts are white and the tail is barred with rufous and black. The plumage of the male and female birds is similar. The territorial call is a distinctive laugh that is often delivered by several birds at the same time, and is widely used as a stock sound effect in situations that involve a jungle setting.
The laughing kookaburra is native to eastern mainland Australia, but has also been introduced to parts of New Zealand, Tasmania, and Western Australia. It occupies dry eucalypt forest, woodland, city parks and gardens. This species is sedentary and occupies the same territory throughout the year. It is monogamous, retaining the same partner for life. A breeding pair can be accompanied by up to five fully grown non-breeding offspring from previous years that help the parents defend their territory and raise their young. The laughing kookaburra generally breeds in unlined tree holes or in excavated holes in arboreal termite nests. The usual clutch is three white eggs. The parents and the helpers incubate the eggs and feed the chicks. The youngest of the three nestlings or chicks is often killed by the older siblings. When the chicks fledge they continue to be fed by the group for six to ten weeks until they are able to forage independently.
A predator of a wide variety of small animals, the laughing kookaburra typically waits perched on a branch until it sees an animal on the ground and then flies down and pounces on its prey. Its diet includes lizards, insects, worms, snakes and are known to take goldfish out of garden ponds. (Wikipedia)

The World's Largest Lobster (French: Le plus grand homard du monde) is a concrete and reinforced steel statue by Canadian artist Winston Bronnum. The statue is 11 metres long and 5 metres tall, weighing 90 tonnes. The sculpture was commissioned by the Shediac Rotary Club as a tribute to the town's lobster fishing industry The sculpture took three years to complete, at a cost of $170,000. It attracts 500,000 visitors per year. The giant claws are constructed of fibreglass.
Shediac is recognized all over the world as "The Lobster Capital of the World" for its lobster fishing industry.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not actually the "World's Largest Lobster" as that title went to the Big Lobster statue in Rosetown, South Australia, until 2015 when Qianjiang, Hubei, China built a 100-tonne lobster/crayfish.

'WD' No. 90532 passes Botanic Gardens station in Hull at the head of a train of full oil tanks from the B.P. refinery at Saltend. 13/3/67. (One can see the chaos caused to road traffic by Hull's many level crossings - especially. when I was going to a funeral. 'Willy' Yeadon says there were eleven crossings).
An image from an album of prints by the Revd David Benson, a curate in Hull when he took most of his photographs. Nearly all from the late 1960s, he not only chased steam (plenty of such photographs from others), but didn't ignore the first generation diesels, of which there are some fantastic images. Also a good number of shots around Hull Docks.

Pieris rapae is a small- to medium-sized butterfly species of the whites-and-yellows family Pieridae. It is known in Europe as the small white, in North America as the cabbage white or cabbage butterfly, on several continents as the small cabbage white, and in New Zealand as the white butterfly. The butterfly is recognizable by its white color with small black dots on its wings, and it can be distinguished from P. brassicae by its larger size and the black band at the tip of its forewings.
The caterpillar of this species, often referred to as the "imported cabbage-worm", is a pest to crucifer crops such as cabbage, kale, bok choy and broccoli.

26 February 2021: In the week to 22 February on average 2293 people tested positive each day in Belgium. The figure is up 23% on the week. In light of these deteriorating statistics the group of experts that advises the government stated that the present epidemiological situation does not allow for any relaxations during the next four weeks. I’m wondering what the latest say of the government will be. Will they be able to resist the mounting demand of pressure groups requesting immediate relaxation of the current measures? Me personally, I’m in full agreement with the experts: there is no leeway for relaxations in March. Since the figures started rising during the weekend, Ghent has reported the highest fourteen-day average for coronavirus infections out of all the major cities in Belgium. The symptoms with which patients present themselves at the hospital are generally more severe than in previous weeks. Additionally, patients are also deteriorating faster. Around half of the patients who tested positive for the virus in the hospital are requiring intensive care, and new hospital admissions are no longer mainly elderly people. According to a lung specialist at the University Hospital of Ghent, these symptoms are typical of the start of a new wave. Let’s hope for the best and prepare for the worse. Meanwhile, in between ongoing video conferences I’m finding joy in taking pictures in Ghent and surroundings and/or in curating images out of my archive. Today’s post is from the midst of this year’s winter snap, just over a week ago – Citadelpark, Ghent, Belgium.
