Modern art galleries and museums have always wanted to tell a story in the usual fashion of linear history. So as a rule rooms in galleries tended to be set out in historical periods or particular styles. The contemporary curator however eschews all that, throws everything into the mix and allows the viewer to piece together their own story.
Now this is all very well for the informed art lover, but can be very confusing to those who have never studied art history. It's a sink or swim model, and the jury is still out on whether this approach is going to be successful.
This section of the QVMAG was recently renovated to allow for more works to be shown from the very large collection that Launceston has built up over 200 years (the settlement itself was founded in 1806). One problem for photographers is that the light intensity has been reduced to 40 lumens per square metre (for example a 60 watt light bulb provides 800 lumens per square metre). This is so the works are not damaged by excess light. But it does make getting good photographs of the works very difficult indeed. This photograph, for instance, appears much brighter than the lighting actually was.

Curated by Filter Photo, Furtive is a photography-based exhibition that explores the complexity of memory, both personal and collective. Through an examination of place, archive and the intersection of perception and knowing, artists Daniel Hojnacki, Karolis Usonis, and Krista Wortendyke ask us to reconsider what we think we know based on our past experiences, communal knowledge and memory.

a perfect way of summing up this year, 2020. Some parts good, some parts bad, horribly bad, kinda like my photostream!
So'ooo...for me, to get myself through 2021, I'm going to throw on some spandex for the mind and workout some more hardcore images.
I'm truly grateful to be able to participate within this group that exercises with such creative thought. Thank you all very much for all of your inspiration in the images that you create. Stay at peace, stay healthy.

The Bay of Fires is a bay on the northeastern coast of Tasmania in Australia, extending from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point.
The Bay of Fires (indigenous name: larapuna) is a bay on the north eastern coast of Tasmania, extending from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point. It is a 29 km long sweep of powder-white sand and crystal-clear seas, with a string of superb beaches, punctuated by lagoons and rocky headlands, backed by coastal heath and bush.
The bay was given its name in 1773 by Captain Tobias Furneaux in Adventure, who saw the fires of Aboriginal people on the beaches along the coast line. The Bay of Fires is characterized by white beaches, blue water and huge granite blocks that are coloured bright orange by lichens. Perhaps, Captain Tobias Furneaux named the bay after these fiery red rocks. The lichens responsible for the orange hue in the rocks of Bay of Fires belong to the family Hymeneliaceae.
The conservation area is divided into three sections, with Anson's Bay dividing the southern and northern ends. A scenic view of the bay can be glimpsed by driving along the coast to The Gardens.
This was taken at Cosy Corner, a small beach near Binalong Bay.

This is a view from Pinnacle Track, Mt Wellington. The weather was bad: cold and drizzly. Beyond the estuary of River Derwent, thick rain clouds and uncanny colours on the horizon made the scene interestingly gloomy.

As the Yellowstone river flows north from Yellowstone Lake, it leaves the Hayden Valley and plunges first over Upper Yellowstone Falls and then a quarter mile (400 m) downstream over Lower Yellowstone Falls, at which point it then enters the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
Cascading from the 590,000 year old Canyon Rhyolite lava flow, Lower Yellowstone Falls is the largest volume waterfall in the Rocky Mountains of the United States. These falls (44°43′05′′N 110°29′46′′W) are 308 feet ( 94 m) high, or nearly twice as high as Niagara Falls. The volume of water flowing over Lower Yellowstone Falls can vary from 680 cu ft/s (19 m3/s) in the autumn, to 8,400 cu ft/s (240 m3 /s) at peak runoff in late springtime. The flow rate of Lower Yellowstone Falls is much less than that of Niagara Falls, as the Yellowstone River is only 70 feet (21 m) at the point at which it goes over the lower falls, Where the Niagara River is 2,600 feet (790 m) in width as it approaches the crest line of Horseshoe Falls. This was viewed from Artist Point. The perspective was similar to those of Thomas Moron's (1871) and Ansel Adams' (1941) famous paintings and photographs on the same subject. Early morning light accentuated the yellow-orange colours of the steep canyon slopes on either side.
"Moravian Pottery and Tile Works is a working history museum and contemporary pottery in Doylestown. TileWorks is a rare surviving early 20th century American Arts and Crafts tile factory. The World's Largest Lobster (French: Le plus grand homard du monde) is a concrete and reinforced steel statue by Canadian artist Winston Bronnum. The statue is 11 metres long and 5 metres tall, weighing 90 tonnes. The sculpture was commissioned by the Shediac Rotary Club as a tribute to the town's lobster fishing industry The sculpture took three years to complete, at a cost of $170,000. It attracts 500,000 visitors per year. The giant claws are constructed of fibreglass.
Shediac is recognized all over the world as "The Lobster Capital of the World" for its lobster fishing industry.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not actually the "World's Largest Lobster" as that title went to the Big Lobster statue in Rosetown, South Australia, until 2015 when Qianjiang, Hubei, China built a 100-tonne lobster/crayfish.
Artist: Winston Bronnum
Year : 1990
Type : Concrete Statue

An image from an album of prints by the Revd David Benson, a curate in Hull when he took most of his photographs. Nearly all from the late 1960s, he not only chased steam (plenty of such photographs from others), but didn't ignore the first generation diesels, of which there are some fantastic images. Also a good number of shots around Hull Docks.

Permanent Artwork | Commission for Pan Am Path, Toronto, Curated by East End Arts |
Set against the backdrop of Toronto’s infamous Don River, cross sections of a canoe are scattered, divided and sunken into a concrete landscape. This large-scale installation pays tribute to the river’s long and tumultuous history, suggesting a civic call to action — a fierce reclamation and reconnection to Toronto’s waterways. The Hopewell Rocks are located in New Brunswick, Canada, within one hour of the nearest airport in Moncton, N.B.
An UNESCO site, the Hopewell Rocks, also called the Flowerpots Rocks or simply The Rocks, are rock formations caused by tidal erosion in The Hopewell Rocks Ocean Tidal Exploration Site in New Brunswick. Carved by melting glaciers, then sculpted by the world's highest and most artistic tides, these stacks stand 40–70 feet tall. They are located on the shores of the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy at Hopewell Cape near Moncton.
Due to the extreme tidal range of the Bay of Fundy, the base of the formations are covered in water twice a day. The formations consist of dark sedimentary conglomerate and sandstone rock. The large volume of water flowing in to and out of the Bay of Fundy modifies the landscape surrounding it. Each day 160 billion tonnes of seawater flows in and out of the Bay of Fundy during one tide cycle, more than the combined flow of the world’s freshwater rivers! After the retreat of the glaciers in the region following the last ice age, surface water filtering through cracks in the cliff has eroded and separated the formations from the rest of the cliff face. Meanwhile, advancing and retreating tides and the associated waves have eroded the base of the rocks at a faster rate than the tops, resulting in their unusual shapes.
Because the Fundy Bay is funnel-shaped - wide and deep at one end and shallow at the other, tides are pushed increasingly higher as they move up the Bay. By the time they reach "The Rocks" they are over four stories high! Although the tides vary from day to day, the high tide can be as high as 16 metres (52ft) and an average of 10.7 metres (35ft), giving the Hopewell Rocks one of the highest average tides in the world.
We only had barely over an hour's time there because the tide was coming in very fast. Luckily the light was reasonably good.
Here's an image captured last September when an early snow storm blanketed these aspen trees. The overall feeling was of a painting, hence the name. I'm happy to announce this image was recently accepted for publication on the curated website, 1x.com.
Personal: a new job and no vacation + drought conditions here in California have left little opportunity for photography. Can't wait to get back into the fields again!

nice to see a piece on virgin wall in Shoreditch that doesn't look commissioned, commercial, curated or consented.
Shot on the 23nd of Argust, 2023
This is the fourth time I participated in Argus Day. As last year, no double exposures, no blank shots, no ripped film, no out-of-focus shots. Still, I don't think that the Argus will become my favourite camera any time soon.
