A short walk into the Skaftafell area of Vatnajokull National Park provides visitors with a breathtaking view of Svartifoss (Black Falls). Ice-cold meltwater from Svinafellsjokull glacier feeds the famous Svartifoss waterfall. The waterfall tumbles down 20 metres (80 ft) over a cliff, which is bordered on both sides by tall black basalt columns. It resembles pipes of a giant organ, which is where the waterfall gets its name.
This wonder of natural architecture inspired the design for both Iceland’s National Theatre and the Hallgrimskirkja church in Reykjavik. The hexagonal columns form inside a lava flow which then cools extremely slowly, giving rise to crystallization.

The solfatara is there, from where the fumes come, very close to the lake. First emitted in the form of vapor, the sulfur is channeled into tubes, and crystallizes on the ground during the night; in
large concretions that the porters move in their baskets.

( I have a short description on how to create these crystals in one of my albums.)

It was in 2021 that Aurélia Sendra began to immortalize the hardcore punk, stoner and doom scene. Concerts were gradually starting up again, and the photographer, a fan of these sounds, was rediscovering this music scene and its audience, the convictions and politicizations that drive them. Driven by a desire to build archives, she wanted to bear witness to the evolution of metal in France where, last year, it has greatly gained in popularity.
Her portraits thus crystallize the effervescence of a culture. They capture the "trance state" of the artists during their performances and the atmosphere that reigns in the room, the enthusiasm of the fans.
Through this approach, she ultimately wants to "tell the story of this new generation in an almost anthropological way".

The Pink Lake, on the Western Highway near Dimboola, Victoria, Australia.
Surrounded by yellow gums, buloke trees and paperbarks, and smaller and distinctive salt tolerant plants that grow in this unique environment. The pink colour of the water comes from a pigment secreted by microscopic algae. The intensity of the pink varies with the amount of water in the lake. When the lake is drier more light is reflected from the white crystallized salt reducing the impact of the pink.
The salt was commercially harvested from the lake for many years and some of the relics from that time can still be seen near the edge of the lake.

*péché mignon = guilty pleasure. Mine? Crystallized ginger... sugary-sweet and spicy-hot. What more could you ask for? Well, dare I say, it's even better when dipped in melted dark chocolate (!). Had a few after the gym today (breakfast of champions!). Saved this one for Happy Bokeh Wednesday. And there you have it. Enjoy.

marble platter, light from chandelier and indirect light from courtyard door. It's a miserable, cold day, we've seen a few snowflakes. No, not pretty, it's too early in the season for pretty.
These cool shapes slowly crystallize out of the salty silt, following alternating cycles of moisture and drying. The ground here was still wet, so I had to be careful not to step through a shape I would later be interested in shooting. These seemed like they were just in their beginning stages; maybe by now they're nice white salt polygons! The best salt polygons are not present all the time, much to my surprise given the number of pictures out there. If you're interested in finding some shapes worth shooting, be prepared to search long and hard. We had the best luck about 0.75 miles north of the Westside Road. Others seemed to find good shapes in Cottonball Basin during previous years. We heard that the area right around Badwater Basin proper was good for finding these things, but we were never able to!
The Saline della Laguna are located in western Sicily, on the coast connecting Trapani to Marsala. It is a unique area in front of the island of Mothia, on the famous "salt route".
Sicily has always been tied to salt, and because it is surrounded by the sea, salt has always been one of its economic resources. Salt is produced in various parts of Sicily from the sea in some salt farms and from rocks in salt mines.
The "Stagnone" is the largest lagoon of Sicily (2000 hectares), and home to a reserve characterized by the presence of some small islands (Isola Longa, Santa Maria, San Pantaleo, Scola). Here, there is fishing galore and a luxuriant and varied fauna to observe. The Phoenicians harvested the "murex", mollusks from which drew purple dye. The stops allow views along the banks of reservoirs, and along the tanks used for salt crystallization. You can also see the Islands which contain restored windmills, a gentle reminder of a time when they were the main tools to pump water and grind salt.
Wind carved Navajo sandstone with tafoni rock formations. Tafoni occur in various settings and rocks, as in sandstone. Here, they are small cavities in this sandstone presumably generated by salt crystallization pressure, where by the crystal occupies a slightly increased volume, resulting in fracture of the rock with subsequent erosion. The initial nucleus for crystallization can be formed by organism living in the sandstone.

Sulfur, salt, and other minerals color the crater of Dallol. The colorful springs on Dallol mountain derive their colors mainly from ferrous chloride and iron hydroxide (both white-greenish), ferric chloride (yellow-brown) and iron oxide (brown).
Dallol is nested on top of an at least 1000m thick layer of quaternary evaporates including large potash (potassium salt) reserves.
Currently, activity is in the form of hot brine springs. Salts washed out of the underlying layers are transported to the surface by geothermally heated water and rapidly crystallize as the water evaporates. The characteristic white, yellow and red colors are the result of sulfur and potassium salts colored by various ions.
There are a few places on Bonaire where you can see natural salt lakes (saliñas). Wind blows seawater on land and remains here. Water evaporates because of sunshine and salt is left behind. Before the sun evaporates this seawater, another amount of seawater flows by wave and tidal into the salt lake. Just before this water reaches full saturation, they pump brine into the crystallizers, which are flooded periodically to maintain a constant level of brine.
Karez System, Turpan, China.
Karez systems are the crystallization of ancient people's diligence and intelligence. At its peak, this irrigation system exceeded 5,000 km (3,106 miles) and was also referred to as 'the underground Great Wall'. It is among the three ancient major irrigation projects with the other two being Ling Canal and Dujiangyan Irrigation Project.
Karez systems are the life source of Turpan. In a sense, without them, there would be no Turpan culture. According to records, the history of the karez in Xinjiang dates back to 103B.C. Currently there are still over 400 systems.
Karez are very delicate irrigation systems made up of vertical wells, underground canals, above-ground canals and small reservoirs. Generally, a karez is 3 km (1.9 miles) with the longest being 20 to 30 km (12-19 miles) with several dozen vertical wells. Sometimes the number of vertical wells exceeds 300. Until today, the shortest karez found is only 30 meters (98 feet) long. The vertical wells are for ventilation, digging and maintenance of the karez. The bottoms of all the vertical wells are connected so that water can pass through. The underground canal is about 2 meters (6.5 feet) high and covered with earth to resist the heat. The surface canals, connected to the underground ones, are not more than 1 meter (3.2 feet) wide with trees planted on both sides to prevent evaporation.
Melting snow from the Tianshan Mountain is the water source of the karez. Water is collected by vertical wells and conducted by the underground canals to the oasis, where the water is held in the ground canals for irrigation. The vertical wells near the water source may be 100 meters (328 feet) deep while further downstream they are less than 10 meters (32.8 feet) deep.

In 1913 Max Weber wrote of his creative process:"We shall not be bound by visible objects-only the essence we as human beings can get out of them... Memories are visible."Weber saw a performance of the Russian Ballet in New York in 1914 and shortly afterward executed a watercolor recording his expressions of the dancers. Two years later he painted this oil, which shows crystallization of this memory in even greater abstraction.

'THE CRYSTAL WORLD' is a novel by J. G. BALLARD, published in 1966.
"The main character is Edward Sanders, an English medical doctor, who arrives to the river port of Port Matarre, in Gabon. From here he tries to reach a leprosy treatment facility where his friends, Max and Suzanne Clair, live. Soon, however, he starts to recognize that a mysterious phenomenon is crystallizing the jungle along with its living creatures. The same phenomenon is reported to be present also in the Florida everglades and in the Pripyat Marshes (Soviet Union) as well. Scientific explanations of the phenomenon are provided within the book: however, Ballard offers mostly an interior and psychological perspective about it, directly through Sanders' experiences. Several facts, furthermore, remains unexplained: for example, the ability of jewels to liquefy the crystals. The crystals also have the property to keep objects and beings in a suspended state of existence. Many passages deal with this characteristic, pointing out its capability to stop time and life."

Back to the salt pans of Tavira.
The rhythm of their exploitation consists of a few distinct phases. During the first one, the seawater is let into the shallow basins. After that the sun does its work – while the water gradually evaporates, it often turns red due to the invasion of the Halobacterium salinarum a salt-loving bacteria.
Before the water is entirely evaporated a part of the salt crystallizes and is harvested as 'flor de sal'. When the evaporation is almost complete the fine salt crystals are harvested. After that a basin rests largely empty, waiting for a new cycle.
The salt pans are operated by Sopursal (Sociedade Industrial de Sal do Algarve).
The scraping tool shown here is propelled by the pulley of a tractor. The men see to it that the tool is pointing in the right direction and at the right. depth.

30 second daylight exposure of Svartifoss using a 10 stop neutral density filter and polarizer. Svartifoss (Black Falls) is surrounded by dark basalt columns. It is located within Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland. These hexagonal columns were formed by lava that cooled at a slow rate which crystallized forming basalt. Over time rapid temperature fluctuations resulted in fractures in the basalt creating hexagonal patterns. It was nice to see a little green growing around the falls.
