Europe, Portugal, Algarve, Sotavento, Ria Formosa, Tavira, Salinas (slightly cut)

The rhythm of the Salinas (salt pans) consists of a few distinct phases. During the first one, the seawater is let into the shallow basins. After that the sun does its work – while the water gradually evaporates, it often turns red due to the invasion of the Halobacterium salinarum a salt-loving bacteria. Before the water is entirely evaporated a part of the salt crystallizes and is harvested as 'flor de sal'. When the evaporation is almost complete the fine salt crystals are harvested. After that a basin rests largely empty, waiting for a new cycle. The basin pictured here seems refilled for this purpose.

The salt pans (salinas) in Tavira are operated by Rui Simeão Tavira Sal . This is number 14 of the Salinas de Tavira album. Check out the soundtrack of the album: Milton Nacimento - Cancão de Sal.

Alberi morti, intrappolati nel carbonato di calcio.

Chiamati "alberi con i calzini" per aver assorbito in vita acqua satura di minerali,

Dead trees, trapped in calcium carbonate.

Called "sock trees" for having absorbed mineral-saturated water during their lifetime.

These absorbed minerals crystallized inside the trunk, killing the tree.

Crystallized Clouds & Star Trails

While working on this series of startrails, clouds started rolling in and with the full-moon illuminating them, I decided to continue the shoot. I wasn't sure how the cloud formations would affect the final shot but I'm glad I did. I like how the clouds look like crystals forming in the sky. I should note, the clouds were coming in from the north (left) and then rolling in a counter-clockwise manner which is why they appear to have the upward 'frost' look to them.

Svartifoss (Black Fall) is surrounded by dark basalt columns located within Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland. These hexagonal columns were formed by lava that cooled at a slow rate which crystallized forming basalt. Over time rapid temperature fluctuations resulted in fractures in the basalt creating hexagonal patterns. It is said that these columns were the inspiration to the architectural design of the Hallgrimskirkja church in the heart of Reykjavik.

All swallowtails or birdwings are almost always in motion. You will find them half hanging in the air and beating their wings even when they are feeding on nectar. This shot has to be taken at a shutter speed of 1/2500s to crystallize the motions.

Rock candy (also called rock sugar) is a type of confection composed of relatively large sugar crystals. This candy is formed by allowing a supersaturated solution of sugar and water to crystallize onto a surface suitable for crystal nucleation, such as a string, stick, or plain granulated sugar.

For those unfamiliar - In biology, a lerp is a structure of crystallized honeydew produced by larvae of psyllid bugs as a protective cover. Many of our native birds use lerp as a food source.

Third and final shot from the outer light at St. Joseph. I liked how the ice was enough to cover the light while still showing off its details.

I had been wanting to photograph this lighthouse for a long time. After checking the weather forecast and earthcam, I knew this was the opportunity I had been waiting for. After a quick stop to buy ice crampons for my boots I made the 3.5 hour drive down to St. Joseph.

It was great being out there but don't think I will be walking around the edge of the inner lighthouse again any time soon. If you want more details read the description in the first photo of this series and look at the video clip I posted.

From Wikipedia: "Mount Sopris is believed to have been formed by an igneous intrusion 10,000 feet below the Earth's surface, geologically referred to as a pluton, that occurred around 30 million years ago, after the initial uplift of the modern Rocky Mountains. Mount Sopris is not a volcano, but it is possible that an ancient volcano sat above it, with the current rock forming the magma chamber far below. Due to subsequent continued erosion, any evidence is now gone. In either case, the rock that makes up Sopris never reached the surface, cooling and crystallizing in situ, and later becoming exposed due to erosion."

There's a park at the end of the bridge here and it gets very crowded in the summer with the cruisers and loud music, the family picnics, the boaters and jet skiers, the selfie takers... All that was wrapping up as night fell and the lights came on silently across the water.

The center of this snowflake was really and truly coloured in real life!!!

I did NOT add the colour in post processing.

A possible explanation of the central colouring is that a dark particle was partially dissolved before crystallization took place. A copper based bit attacked by carbonic acid would produce a green tint.

For Macro Mondays: Junk theme

I have many things most people would classify as "junk" but to me they are "treasures" and I keep them for their intrinsic beauty and photographic potential.

For this week's Macro Mondays theme I chose to photograph a small bar of Pears Soap that was provided in my room at a hotel. I have had it for many years--so long that it has crystallized. Surprisingly, it still has that distinctive Pears Soap fragrance.

See comment section below for the scale of soap. It is just under 3" in the largest dimension.

This is a slice of malachite from Katanga DR Congo courtesy of Pala International. My guess would be that it is a slice of a malachite stalactite. Any correction will be appreciated.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malachite

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral, with the formula Cu2CO3(OH)2. This opaque, green-banded mineral crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system, and most often forms botryoidal, fibrous, or stalagmitic masses, in fractures and deep, underground spaces, where the water table and hydrothermal fluids provide the means for chemical precipitation. Individual crystals are rare, but occur as slender to acicular prisms. Pseudomorphs after more tabular or blocky azurite crystals also occur.[5]

The stone's name derives (via Latin: molochītis, Middle French: melochite, and Middle English melochites) from Greek Μολοχίτης λίθος molochites lithos, "mallow-green stone", from μολόχη molochē, variant of μαλάχη malāchē, "mallow".[6] The mineral was given this name due to its resemblance to the leaves of the mallow plant.[7] Copper (Cu2+) gives malachite its green color.[8]

Malachite was mined from deposits near the Isthmus of Suez and the Sinai as early as 4000 BCE.[9]

It was extensively mined at the Great Orme Mines in Britain 3,800 years ago, using stone and bone tools. Archaeological evidence indicates that mining activity ended c. 600 BCE, with up to 1,760 tonnes of copper being produced from the mined malachite.[10][11]

The theme this year was Shades of Green- Experience the Magic. The theme for next year's show will be Red, White, and Blue Celebrate the Spirit of Minerals

xpopress.com/news/article/783/shades-of-green-70th-annual...

Green-colored gemstones are part of almost every mineral group. Famous members include emeralds (beryl); chrysoprase, bloodstone, aventurine, imperial jasper, kabamba jasper, and ocean jasper (quartz); green tourmaline; green sapphires; nephrite jade and imperial green jadeite; as well as tsavorite, grossular, demantoid, and drusy uvarovite (garnets).

There are also the soloists: malachite, amazonite, chrysoberyl, chrome diopside, maw-sit-sit, drusy liebethenite from Congo, fluorite, peridot, gaspeite, lime magnesite, seraphinite, prehnite, idocrase, and serpentine.

Green gems vary in hue, chroma (saturation), lightness, and tint, each with an identifiable green shade. They evoke memories of picturesque and scenic vistas, gardens, and lush meadows. Green is considered relaxing and pleasing to the eye and symbolizes nature, spring, healing, fertility, rebirth, and regeneration. It is linked to over thirty similes, idioms, and phrases used in everyday language.

Tucson Gem Show 2025

Noctilucent Clouds , Germany, Mörlenbach 21.06.2019. Noctilucent Clouds clouds are accumulations of ice crystals over the mesopause. There, the absolute temperature minimum of the earth's atmosphere is reached. They appear at a height of 81 to 85 km. They can be seen on clear nights around the summer solstice, especially in a northerly direction. The crystallization nuclei for the ice crystals may be particles that form when burning meteors.

Just before the sunset, with the moon well visible, there was indeed a very special mood in El Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon). The valley is located west of San Pedro de Atacama in the Cordillera de la Sal, in the Atacama desert.

Macro shot of crystals using the 15 years old minolta 100 AF macro lens with Raynox 250.

A crystallized forest. The absence of water and the high temperatures have burned all the vegetation, leaving only the black skeletons of hundreds of trees that remain standing - and do not decompose - precisely because the land on which they rest is too dry.

We are in Dead Vlei, in the dead swamp of Namibia, among the imposing red dunes of the Namib Naukluft Park, in the heart of the Namib desert. A very strange landscape, mecca of nature photographers from all over the world for the inimitable contrast of colors.

Once Dead Vlei was crossed by the Tsauchab River, which fed the desert landscape and fed the trees. But over 900 years ago, following the movements of the dunes caused by the wind, the river irreparably deviated its course, leaving the swamp completely arid. As evidence of that flourishing oasis in the desert, only the trees burned by the sun remain, as if to testify to the death of the place.

Not far from this immense expanse, surrounded by dunes that reach 400 meters in height, is also Sossusvlei, another "place of no return", whose name refers to an ephemeral pool of water, where water c 'it is only for short periods and the ground is clear, almost white, so much so that it still looks like a lake that is well distinguished from the red dunes. Even on this land broken by aridity, a landscape has been created that seems to belong to another planet, where the contrasts of a wild and amazing nature reign.
