I trimmed the ragged left edge and adjusted the levels a bit. The photos are impressive pieces of work, that I thought deserved wider attention. Here are all 10 of his entries into the Nikon contests. 7 are agates, most related to this one: www.nikonsmallworld.com/people/douglas-moore
Douglas Moore, the photographer, has granted his permission to reuse his copyrighted image here. He made the following comments:
"The Belosov-Zabotinskii reaction (one theory) involves oscillating fibrous crystallization forming the bands, which force the iron particles out to the periphery of each band. In macro view, you see a red agate made up of these iron particles alternating with the banding. No one knows how agates form, although Peter Haney of Penn State has the best understanding of the complexities of agate genesis, as evidenced by his presentation in a recent GIA symposium. The Teepee Canyon and Fairburn Agates (actually the same, although the latter was weathered out of the Minnelusa Formation in the Black Hills and deposited in the Badlands/Grasslands) are my favorites to photograph under the microscope. They are marine sedimentary agates (as opposed to volcanic agates) that feature wide bands and sharply defined structures.
I've kind of given up trying to figure out how agates form, and just collect them for their beauty, antiquity and as objects of scientific curiosity."
After thinking about those 'raspberries', I came up with this idea:
I know little about agates except that they are a variety of chalcedony and quartz with various coloring agents. I know that there is a "fire agate" with clear chalcedony layered over iron oxides. So the red 'raspberries' could be hematite aggregates 'floating' in clear chalcedony?? What do you think?
I'd never heard of the Belosov-Zabotinskii reaction. Have you? The GIA is the Gemological Institute of America.

Pretty interesting, and you can see the relevance to patterns in agates.
Anyway: interesting photo. Glad to see some discussions of it, even if it seems likely to remain as another of the many Unsolved Mysteries of SCIENCE!

Formation of Kang Lau Shek
The rocks on Tung Ping Chau are overspread with groups of crisscross cracks. These are fractures formed when the rock strata were under compression in early times. Fragmented rocks were removed because densely cracked rocks were influenced by intensive weathering and erosion, the impact of waves, differential expansion and contraction, and the crystallization of salt. Protected by the huge hard rock blocks on its top, Kang Lau Shek eroded more slowly than the surrounding rocks, gradually forming the two huge rock stacks that remain today.

While resembling fossils, this pattern is created by crystallization of andalusite and other minerals. It has natural inclusions of Calcite, Feldspar, Crandallite, Andalusite, and Celestite. These inclusions are generally white on a very dark matrix and resemble a Chrysanthemum flower. This image was taken under UV light; the crystal "flower" fluoresces.

Well developed crystals of epidote, Ca2Al2(Fe3+;Al)(SiO4)(Si2O7)O(OH), crystallizing in the monoclinic system, are of frequent occurrence: they are commonly prismatic in habit, the direction of elongation being perpendicular to the single plane of symmetry. The faces are often deeply striated and crystals are often twinned. Many of the characters of the mineral vary with the amount of iron present for instance, the color, the optical constants, and the specific gravity. The color is green, grey, brown or nearly black, but usually a characteristic shade of yellowish-green or pistachio-green. It displays strong pleochroism, the pleochroic colors being usually green, yellow and brown. Clinozoisite is green, white or pale rose-red group species containing very little iron, thus having the same chemical composition as the orthorhombic mineral zoisite. The name, due to Haüy, is derived from the Greek word "epidosis" (ἐπίδοσις) which means "addition" in allusion to one side of the ideal prism being longer than the other.
Woodlice are land-dwelling crustaceans that belong to the order Isopoda, which also includes shrimp and crabs. Woodlice consume and accumulate heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and mercury from the soil. This process helps to detoxify the soil and prevent the metals from spreading to plants and groundwater. They store these metals in their bodies, often crystallizing them in their gut, and for this reason, they are used by scientists as bioindicators to measure soil contamination levels

On frosty spring nights, the fruit trees (here: apples) in the plantations are sprinkled with fine water droplets. When the water freezes, heat of crystallization is released, which protects the delicate buds, leaves and flowers.
For MM Guilty Pleasure - earrings, I have dozens but can't stop buying more. Here on a pile of crystallized ginger which I can't stop eating though I know they are full of sugar.

A beautiful crystallized tree frozen in time!
I tried my best to capture the beauty around me.
I had very minimal knowledge of the camera and was probably shooting in auto. I have learned a few things since then but still have a long way to go.

The Châteu Enveloped in a White, Frozen Beauty!! And….blooms???
That late morning was really frozen in Belgium !! -6C!! The snow had become crystallized, the waters deeply frozen ! And my son Nicholas and I, decided to visit the Château (…De La Hulpe), and immortalize with our cameras its frozen , charming Beauty!
❤️ No one can imagine , that amidst this white frozen Beauty, Mother Nature will offer us colourful blooms!! YET!!!! She DID that frozen morning!! You can admire in my photos here some magnificent (!!) Hamamelis blooms, or , in their common name, Witch-Hazel blooms!! Oh, YES!!! ❤️❤️

This photo was taken during a perfect clear night on the Lofoten Islands. The moon was lighting up the ice and snow while the nothern lights were dancing over the beautiful landscape. Had such a view in my mind for long time and was happy to photograph it :)
