A nicely-lit scene from the crypt at York Minster. Cost a fortune to get in which did not impress me at all but I had promised my son I would take him there.

This is just one of many beautiful family crypts in the Père LaChaise cemetery of Paris. The cemetery is one of my favorite places to visit in Paris. It’s very peaceful and the art is amazing! Plus, it was interesting to learn how the burials take place and how the elaborate crypts and mausoleums are maintained by the families. Often the doors are open, and I’ve stepped respectfully into several. “Père Lachaise is an operating cemetery and accepts new burials. However, the rules to be buried in a Paris cemetery are that people may be buried in one of these cemeteries if they die in the French capital city or if they lived there. Being buried in Père Lachaise is even more difficult nowadays as there is a waiting list and very few plots are available. The grave sites at Père Lachaise range from a simple, unadorned headstone to towering monuments and even elaborate mini chapels dedicated to the memory of a well-known person or family. Many of the tombs are about the size and shape of a telephone booth, with just enough space for a mourner to step inside, kneel to say a prayer, and leave some flowers.”

St Wystans Crypt constructed in the early 8th century; it was built over a spring and is thought to have originally been a baptistery.
It was converted into a mausoleum for King Æthelbald of Mercia, during his lifetime. King Wiglaf and his grandson Saint Wigstan (after whom the later church is named), were also buried in the crypt.

Italy, Aquapendente.
Inside the Cathedral of Santo Sepulcro is an amazing crypt of the 10th century. This is one of the most important Romanesque crypts in Italy and dates back to the second half of the tenth century when Acquapendente, situated on the Via Francigena, became a stopping place for pilgrims heading to Rome.
