In the Abbaye Saint-Léger in Soissons. The crypt was made in two phases, first a Romanesque crypt in the late 11th century, and then a choir added around 1200. I think I was standing in the older part, looking towards the light in the clearly Gothic part of the crypt. If you look closely you can see that the vaults and arches once were painted, but little remains of it now. But it must have been quite colourful back in the day!
And yes, the stone things to the far left and right, flanking the opening, are coffins. Medieval ones, and likely Romanesque (judging by their shapes), but empty by now.
This superb low-vaulted stone crypt, which floods in rainy months, dates from the 11th century, the earliest phase of building the Cathedral. Here you’ll find Antony Gormley’s mysterious life-size sculpture of a solitary man, 'Sound II', sometimes standing up to its knees in water.

In the church Sant'Andrea in Viterbo, dating to the 13th century (first mentioned 1236 - when it replaced an earlier church at the same place) and built in the Romanesque style, but with later additions. The church was badly damaged by bombings during the second world war but has been restored to its original looks.
(No, not the optimal light conditions here - but I really wanted to try to capture the atmosphere and I think I have done that okay well, at least.)

It's been 9 months since my travel to Spain and now I post my second of many pics I took during my holiday. I will be posting more in the coming days and weeks and I hope you will follow me on my journey around this fascinating country... :)) Thank you.
The Oratory’s crypt church was constructed in 1916 using the designs of the architects Dalbé Viau and Alphonse Venne. It was the first step in a great undertaking whose final phase would culminate in the construction of a Basilica situated on a mountain top. The edifice is of neoclassical inspiration with a dominance of Italian Renaissance. The church is called a crypt because of the flattened arches vaulting the worship space and its position beneath the Basilica.

At this time of year, the moor is looking desolate. The lighter patches in between the darker heather are areas where the older heather has been burnt during the winter to allow fresh young heather to re-generate and grass to grow to feed the sheep. The valley in the background is the beautiful Rosedale
Ana Cross (Ain Howe Cross) stands proudly on Spaunton Moor in the North Yorkshire Moor National Park, England
It is described as a Waymarker cross. Early C19. Diagonally-tooled gritstone. Square section cross on a rectangular base
The original top of Ain Howe Cross, or Ana Cross as it is usually called today, is in the crypt of Lastingham church. Several years ago the cross was repaired and today it stands proud and prominent on Spaunton Moor between Rosedale and Lastingham and is the tallest cross on the moors.

Chapel of Saint Antoine (Sint-Antoniuskapel), Leuven, Belgium.
The chapel is remarkable: built in 1617, it looks from the outside just as you might expect. The inside however, is quite another story. Jos Ritzen and Walter Steenhoudt were given the task (1960) to build the crypt and rebuild the chapel upwards from there, without affecting the outside. They created something light and beautiful, with brutalist features.

I was at a sim yesterday, with my camera in the crypt looking out, when this cute little stranger came into my frame. I am so happy I was able to grab her image before she disappeared!

'Sound II' by Antony Gormley (fashioned in lead from a cast of his own body)
Because of the high water table, the crypt in Winchester Cathedral is often flooded. Only a small flood is needed for the opportunity of some reflection shots. see comment box

A nicely-lit scene from the crypt at York Minster. Cost a fortune to get in which did not impress me at all but I had promised my son I would take him there.
