Common Emerald (Lestes sponsa) - male
Along with the Black Darter I'm seeing ever-decreasing numbers of these at what were once hot-spots.
On the one hand the lack of water could be to blame, but, in all honesty, these heathland ponds are prone to severe drought during summer, and that hasn't affected the numbers in previous years!
From 100's to barely a dozen is worryingly noticeable. It would be a shame to lose these spectacular little jewels...
I have been going through this puzzle book over the last month. Today I got to a fresh page and was shocked to see notations on the bottom. I can't tell what they say. The handwriting looks a little like mine but I don't recall ever having written anything. If I were making a memo I would have written it on a small card I keep in my kitchen. Since I live alone this one has me scratching my head. The drawn arrows do look like mine but again I have no memory of having written anything in my book. I can't think of a reason I would have. Hmmm....
Also, I somehow managed not to solve the puzzle correctly. Maybe someone was trying to jinx me.
These birds are very common in Costa Rica. But it's rare to see them apart from seeing their reflective eyes at night when they wait till the last second on the road to get out of the way of passing cars. They are very well camouflaged and will wait till you are nearly on top of them to fly away.
Cryptic message in a long abandoned DeKalb,IL. farmhouse. If it wasn't for the bright sunshine blazing through the glass-less windows,I would have been pretty creeped out by this....
Beetle moved from a nearby leaf onto a tree trunk in order to better illustrate its camouflage.

This caterpillar has created its own camouflage niche either by selectively choosing a dead patch on a leaf or creating it. If a potential intruder sees past the disguise it has to contend with a pair of fierce and disproportionately large fake eyes…..

Within the UK, the Cryptic Wood White only occurs in Northern Ireland. It was discovered to be different from the Wood White in 2001 and, more recently, its identification was changed again to this new name. The Wood White is very similar, but seems to be restricted to the Burren region in Ireland.
The upperwings are white with rounded edges. The males have a black mark in the edge of the forewing. The undersides are white, with indistinct grey or greenish markings.
