Cryptically & Baffling

Found this profound graffiti daubed in a wall in Kirkintilloch , is it fact , is it fiction? , maybe a book or film title who knows? Someone was angry enough to pen this unusual graffiti rant for all to see

"Spooks" is a great programme too

The crypt under Lund's Cathedral has remained largely untouched since its consecration in 1123.

Close up shot of lobster moth caterpillar, these are very cryptic in nature blending with dry leaves and twigs. These are commonly found in western ghats region of India during the month of October.

Spring of 2020 was miserable where I live in Stockholm Sweden. It just refused to get warm enough for insects to come out.

This is from the first real chance I had to catch any flying insects and was as late as May 19th(!)

This rather small butterfly refueling on a pink flower is either a wood white (Leptidea sinapis) or a cryptic wood white (Leptidea juvernica).

If only because I don't know how to read it

I noticed some movement and spotted this Wilson's snipe in the open. Once it crossed the icy creek bed, you can see how its coloration made it almost indiscernible.

This is Ireland's most recently-discovered butterfly. It was first thought to be the very similar Wood White, then found to be different and believed be Réal's Wood White. Further analysis resulted in the Réal's Wood White species being spilt, and our one is now called Cryptic Wood White. In the British Isles it is only found in Ireland and is quite widespread, when the weather allows.

** - I just love cryptic car names and a astronomical twist makes the name complete.

Montana de Oro State Park, San Luis Obispo Co., California

This species typically has a decorative clump of seaweed on its rostrum. That coupled with the red on red on red in this case make for some good camouflage, which was diminished some here by my flash (which made more distinct shadows) and photo processing.

Among the most cryptically camouflaged of all invertebrates, leaf insects (Phyllium spp.) are difficult to find in their natural habitat. Many new species have been described from Southeast Asia in recent years. This is a subadult female (P. arthurchungi) from the rainforest of northern Borneo.

Camouflage at its best.

Our guide had to show us where this chameleon was at the reserve. We could not have found it on our own.

Calumma crypticum, commonly known as the cryptic chameleon, is a species of chameleon found in Madagascar.

The species is endemic to Madagascar and has a broad latitudinal distribution between the Anosy Mountains in the south and the Tsaratanana Massif in the north.

It is a forest chameleon that occurs in mid-altitudes between 1,050 and 1,850 m elevation, where it appears to be more abundant in semi-open areas associated with trails, gaps and rivers.

The chameleon species is only found in humid forest and the loss or severe degradation of these habitats due to agricultural conversion and logging is a threat, especially outside of protected areas.

Walk through the rainforest quickly and you might not see anything and leave with the impression that there is little wildlife to be seen. On the other hand walk slowly and examine your surroundings and cryptic wildlife will quickly become apparent.

Sphindus sp., I believe. Found at Bastrop State Park in central Texas, ESE of Austin. Bastrop County, Texas, USA.

There are a lot of downed trees at this State Park and I saw a lot of slime molds on my recent visit. Many of the slime mold fruiting bodies were being grazed upon by these beetles.

Cryptic enough to meld into the limbs of trees, this ghoulish bird (here seen with chick) will eat bats and small birds in addition to insects. A Lifer seen on a "field birding" (vs. "feeder birding") trip to Colombia in the Casanare region. Hato La Aurora.
