"I'm not being Cryptic Connie but the deadly silence is killing me" says Asha at The Parish Churchyard in Donaghadee County Down
There were epochs in the history of the humanity in which the writer was a sacred person. He wrote the sacred books, universal books, the codes, the epic, the oracles. Sentences inscribed on the walls of the crypts; examples in the portals of the temples. But in those times the writer was not an individual alone; he was the people. [Augusto Roa Bastos]
Latiano, Puglia, lies in the province of Brindisi at the northern border of the Plain of Lecce. According to the writings of the historian Primaldo Coco, it was probably founded in the XI century. From its origins to the sale of the feud of Latiano (1092-1407) its history was marked by a sequence of Norman and then Swabian, Angevin and then Aragonese dominations. The feud became a Barony in the subsequent centuries, until 1611. When the last Baron, Domenico Imperiali, bought for himself the title of Marquis, the town became the Marquisate of Latiano up to the mid seventeenth century. Then Napoleon suppressed feudality and Latiano followed the destiny of the Reign of Naples, with the rise of banditry. When Italy was unified, the State’s railway connecting Taranto to Brindisi was built (1866) and small industries were founded to use and trade the local resources. As regards the events between the end of last century and the First World War, there is not much information left by the historians because much of the documentation of the historical archive was destroyed by a fire in the town hall caused by a popular revolt that broke out in May 1917 . These small clusters of hidden, venomous sea anemones were discovered in a deep, dark hole (puka) in a lava rock formation by me during reef surveys that my husband & I were conducting in Honaunau Bay, Hawaii. This species had not previously been reported on the Big Island. During our 900 hours of diving in this location, we only located this unique animal in one other spot, but due to unfavorable ocean conditions were unable to return to that location again to photograph them. Sea anemones are predatory, marine animals of the order Actiniaria.
*After discovering these hidden anemones, it took several consecutive years of scuba diving to photograph them under mostly turbid or dim light conditions. The day finally came to do our poster presentation at Western Illinois University, Annual Meetings of the Illinois State Academy of Science.
*Poster presentation can be viewed below.
greetings, I hope this finds all of you well on this Easter Eve. Just dropping by to say hello and relay that I am alive and mostly well.
I have been deep into my Christmas gift from Tonia, which was pushed across the carpet to me unwrapped with the apology, "sorry it isn't wrapped, I couldn't lift it." Un opening the folds of cardboard revealed 15 books, nay, tombs of the 'series' Wheel of Time....and that's all that I've done for the past several months and I now have #12 awaiting. If you've read Robert Jordan you know that he can tell the scene of a battle in which thousands die in two pages and yet the act of walking into an inn might take eight as he expounds on every frill, every hint of lace, or the lack thereof in the more seedy of establishments, every board that creaks under weight and he might culminate by describing the gray of the whiskers protruding from the elongated nose of a plump dun colored rat that crouches warily in the shadow cast from the green river stone fireplace centered on the distant Eastern clapboard wall while nibbling on a questionable remnant of cheese... I could go on, but you get the idea.
My goal is to finish by the end of April and then return to the real world, such as it is.
Oh, I will post a pic of this place of mystery with a history of it 'soon'. I want to make sure that it gets its due without the rant. 'see' you shortly.... :)
Cryptically-colored nightbird. Note white “moustache” streak, golden-brown collar, and pointed buff-and-black feathers above the wing. Much more intricately marked than Large-tailed Nightjar; also lacks white throat of that species. Not as diffusely patterned as Savanna and Jungle Nightjars, both of which lack Indian’s white “moustache” and clear collar. Male shows bright white patches near the wingtips and on the tail-tips in flight. Found in a range of wooded habitats, from hilly dry forest to garden edges. Listen for its distinctive song, an accelerating knocking akin to a ping-pong ball dropping and bouncing rapidly on the floor.
Bush crickets have some of the most incredible camouflage. It's almost unbelievable how some species, such as this one, look exactly like they are growing lichens/moss out of their back. Once they become adults and develop wings, they they take on a fresh disguise, almost perfectly mimicking leaves.

Finally got out to find my Cryptics of 2019.
This is Ireland's most recently-discovered butterfly. It was first thought to be the very similar Wood White, then found to be different and believed be Réal's Wood White. Further analysis resulted in the Réal's Wood White species being split, and our one is now called Cryptic Wood White.
Genus Hersilla, also known as two tailed spider. They are sometimes known as long-spinnered bark spiders, due to their greatly enlarged spinnerets.
Now, Sou is showing her dark side in this picture, unlike the last set. And, she is wearing a crown, but you can't see it. I took a million pictures of her, because my camera would never focus once I got a perfect angle!

This picture is dedicated to redlollypop6, because her photo "Fallen" inspired me to show Sou's true side... ^^
The best bird on the planet, I'll take this over any bird of prey. The more I learn about this species, the more respect I have for them. The first time I heard a Nightjar will stick with me forever, so to get this opportunity to photograph one while roosting was magical. Big thanks to my good friend Gary who not only found it, but ensured the best way to photograph the bird without any disturbance.

When the butterfly closes its wings it becomes invisible. Even his legs match the straw colored sticks on the ground.
